The Crucible by Arthur Miller Book Summary:

A haunting examination of groupthink and mass hysteria in a rural community The place is Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, an enclave of rigid piety huddled on the edge of a wilderness. Its inhabitants believe unquestioningly in their own sanctity. But in Arthur Miller's edgy masterpiece, that very belief will have poisonous consequences when a vengeful teenager accuses a rival of witchcraft—and then when those accusations multiply to consume the entire village. First produced in 1953, at a time when America was convulsed by a new epidemic of witch-hunting, The Crucible brilliantly explores the threshold between individual guilt and mass hysteria, personal spite and collective evil. It is a play that is not only relentlessly suspenseful and vastly moving but that compels readers to fathom their hearts and consciences in ways that only the greatest theater ever can. "A drama of emotional power and impact" —New York Post

Evil in the Swamp & Terror in Brooklyn by Eli Quinn Book Summary:

Evil In The Swamp Evil in the Swamp takes place during the 1950s in Santurce, Puerto Rico. During this period, “El Fangito,” as it was called, was home to some of the poorest people on the island. It was rife with poverty, disease, crime and despair. Most of the people were indigent and had nowhere else to live. Some were so poor they could not afford even the lowest rents, some even built their own “homes” from scavenged items. To add to the misery of the people, the area was like a swamp. Water flooded the entire area, making getting around difficult. Nonetheless people lived there under these conditions. This story centers on a young couple, an uneducated teenage girl who has just borne a baby girl, and the father of her baby, an abusive drunk. During this time “machismo” defined the lives of these people. The men controlled the women and, the purse strings and did basically as they pleased. The women were at the mercy of these men. Such is the life of Awilda, who has no one to help her escape the brutality of her existence. Santeria and voodoo where practiced during this time, and because of lack of medical services people relied on healers and witches to cure them of illnesses and to avenge any perceived injustices. There were said to be many witches in the swamp community. One witch in particular was said to be the most powerful of all and was the most feared. Jose, the protagonist in the story, is a drunk and a bully. One night Jose incurs the wrath of the evil witch and the entire community is terrorized as they witness her power and rage. Terror in Brooklyn This takes place in the mid- sixties and involves a young, single woman with a small daughter who has the ability to see the dead. She has had this ability since she was her daughter’s’ age, and though it has caused scary moments, she is totally unprepared for what happens when she moves into a new apartment with a dark history. People say sometimes places harbor evil if something evil has happened there. They say evil lurks where it is allowed to fester. The young mother realizes from the start that there is something there in the apartment, something “not quite right,” but because of her situation, her desperation to have her own place, she ignores the feelings that have warned her in the past to be on guard, to be aware of something. She has vivid dreams of being stalked and suffers attacks at the hands of something evil, something she cannot see. She is horrified when she finally sees what is after her, when she sees the entity that “resides” in her new home. The attacks on her become more violent as the evil entity seeks to destroy her until finally her life hangs in the balance. Will she survive?

This volume is a companion to the other two Penguin Classics edition of Lovecraft's work: The Call of the Cthulhu and The Thing on the Doorstep. This original collection presents the definitive texts of the work, including a newly restored text of "The Shadow out of time" along with S. T. Joshi's invaluable introduction and notes. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson Book Summary:

A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut. In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet's word is law, Immanuelle Moore's very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement. But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood. Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her.

Witch Wood by John Buchan Book Summary:

Introduced by Christopher Harvie. Set against the religious struggles of seventeenth-century Scotland, with Montrose for the king against a convenanted kirk, John Buchan’s Witch Wood is a gripping atmospheric tale in the spirit of Stevenson and Neil Munro. As a moderate Presbyterian minister, young David Sempill disputes with the extremists of his faith. All around, the defeated remnants of Montrose’s men are being harried and slaughtered by the faithful, and Sempill’s plea for compassion, like his love for the beautiful Katrine Yester, is out of joint with the times. There are still older conflicts to be faced however, symbolised by the presence of the Melanudrigill Wood, a last remnant of the ancient Caledonian forest. Here there is black magic to be uncovered, but also the more positive pre-Christian intimations of nature worship. In such setting, and faced with the onset of the plague, David Sempill’s struggle and eventual disappearance take on a strange and timeless aspect in what was John Buchan’s own favourite among his many novels. ‘Set in the Borders which he knew so well, this story of 17th-century Scotland shows the qualities which have enabled Buchan’s thrillers to last so well, and which still persuade serious readers to regard him more highly than many apparently more ambitious novelists.’ Independent

Witch by M. Malmstrom Book Summary:

It is 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, when Penelope, the daughter of an evil archangel and the first woman ever, embarks on a vengeful mission to destroy overbearing men. As she unleashes her special powers onto a crowd of onlookers awaiting the lynching of another witch, she focuses a red beam of light from her eyes—leaving chaos and destruction in her wake. Surveying the damage, she smiles and vanishes. As the only daughter of Lilith and Samael, Penelope has been there and seen it all. By the time she is twelve, she has traveled the universe through portals and witnessed the lack of equality and even the debasement of women everywhere. From the Garden of Eden to the dark ages and from the French Revolution to the Salem witch trials, she has finally freed herself from the four portals where she has been trapped for thousand of years. Now in present day California, she is using her special powers—with God’s blessing—to further her cause. In this tale of biblical proportions, Penelope leads an innocent family into her dark world as she decides whether to use her powers for good or evil.

Movie Wars by Jonathan Rosenbaum Book Summary:

Is the cinema, as writers from David Denby to Susan Sontag have claimed, really dead? Contrary to what we have been led to believe, films are better than ever--we just can't see the good ones. Movie Wars cogently explains how movies are packaged, distributed, and promoted, and how, at every stage of the process, the potential moviegoer is treated with contempt. Using examples ranging from the "New York Times"'s coverage of the Cannes film festival to the anticommercial practices of Orson Welles, Movie Wars details the workings of the powerful forces that are in the process of ruining our precious cinematic culture and heritage, and the counterforces that have begun to fight back.
