The simulation that was supposed to prepare them all for life after the apocalypse has trapped their minds in a shared virtual reality and their bodies in stasis chambers. No one can get off the ship until all of the passengers are out of the sim, and no one can get out of the sim unless they believe it's a simulation. It's up to Lake to help them remember. When Lake reveals the truth to a fellow passenger, seventeen-year-old Taren, he joins her mission to find everyone, persuade them that they’ve forgotten reality, and wake them up. But time’s running out before the simulation completely deconstructs, and soon Taren’s deciding who’s worth saving and who must be sacrificed for the greater good. Now, Lake has no choice but to pit herself against Taren in a race to find the secret heart of the sim, where something waits that will either save them or destroy them all.

Memories of the Future

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Memories of the Future by Siri Hustvedt Book Summary:

A provocative, exuberant novel about time, memory, desire, and the imagination from the internationally bestselling and prizewinning author of The Blazing World. A young woman, S.H., moves to New York City in 1978 to look for adventure and write her first novel, but finds herself distracted by her mysterious neighbor, Lucy Brite. As S.H. listens to Lucy through the thin walls of her dilapidated building, she carefully transcribes the woman’s bizarre monologues about her daughter’s violent death and her need to punish the killer. Forty years later, S.H. stumbles upon the journal she kept that year and writes a memoir, Memories of the Future, in which she juxtaposes the notebook’s texts, drafts from her unfinished comic novel, and her commentaries on them to create a dialogue among selves over the decades. She remembers. She misremembers. She forgets. Events of the past take on new meanings. She works to reframe her traumatic memory of a sexual assault. She celebrates the legacy of the wild and rebellious Dada artist-poet, the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. As the book unfolds, you witness S.H. write her way through vengeance and into freedom. Smart, funny, angry, and poignant, Hustvedt’s seventh novel brings together the themes that have made her one of the most celebrated novelists working today: the strangeness of time, the brutality of patriarchy, and the power of the imagination to remake the past.

New Dark Age

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

New Dark Age by James Bridle Book Summary:

"New Dark Age is among the most unsettling and illuminating books I've read about the Internet, which is to say that it is among the most unsettling and illuminating books I've read about contemporary life." - New Yorker As the world around us increases in technological complexity, our understanding of it diminishes. Underlying this trend is a single idea: the belief that our existence is understandable through computation, and more data is enough to help us build a better world. In reality, we are lost in a sea of information, increasingly divided by fundamentalism, simplistic narratives, conspiracy theories, and post-factual politics. Meanwhile, those in power use our lack of understanding to further their own interests. Despite the apparent accessibility of information, we're living in a new Dark Age. From rogue financial systems to shopping algorithms, from artificial intelligence to state secrecy, we no longer understand how our world is governed or presented to us. The media is filled with unverifiable speculation, much of it generated by anonymous software, while companies dominate their employees through surveillance and the threat of automation. In his brilliant new work, leading artist and writer James Bridle surveys the history of art, technology, and information systems, and reveals the dark clouds that gather over our dreams of the digital sublime.

The Routledge Companion to the Future of Marketing

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Routledge Companion to the Future of Marketing by Luiz Moutinho,Enrique Bigné,Ajay K. Manrai Book Summary:

Marketing has changed substantially in the last few years. With more and more research conducted in marketing and consumer behaviour fields, and technological advances and applications occurring on a regular basis, the future of marketing opens up a world of exciting opportunities. Going beyond a state-of-the-art view of the discipline, this innovative volume focuses on the advances being made in many different areas such as; critical thinking, new paradigms, novel conceptualisations, as well as key technological innovations with a direct impact on the theory and practice of marketing. Each chapter presents an expert overview, and an analytical and engaging discussion of the topic, as well as introducing a specific research agenda paving the way for the future. The Routledge Companion to the Future of Marketing provides the reader with a comprehensive set of visionary insights into the future of marketing. This prestigious collection aims to challenge the mindset of marketing scholars, transforming current thinking into new perspectives and advances in marketing knowledge. Foreword Wayne S. DeSarbo, Smeal College of Business, Pennsylvania State Univerity, USA "The Future of Marketing" presents 22 different chapters written by some of the top scholars in the field of Marketing. These 22 chapters are organized into four topical areas: (1) New paradigms and philosophical insights (Chapters 1-5), (2) Contributions from other scientific fields (Chapters 6-9), (3) Reconnecting with consumers and markets (Chapters 10-17), and (4) New methodological insights in scholarly research in the field (Chapters 18-22). Thus, there are a number of diverse areas treated here ranging from futuristic managerial philosophies to state of the art qualitative and quantitative methodologies applicable to the various types of Marketing problems to be faced in the future. There are a number of implicit guidelines (and future research areas and needs) that can be gleaned for (quantitative) modelers in terms of the issues and considerations that their constructed models should explicitly accommodate in future empirical endeavors: Heterogeneity When modeling consumer perceptions, preferences, utility structures, choices, etc., it is important to avoid potential masking issues that aggregate models are subject to in many cases. In the simple case, consider a regression scenario where there are two equal sized segments whose utility functions (as a function of price) are opposite reflections of each other. Aggregating the sample in one large analysis yields a non-significant price elasticity coefficient, whereas estimating separate utility functions by segment displays the true structure in the data. While latent structure and hierarchical Bayesian methods have been developed for disaggregate analyses, a number of methodological issues exist with such existent approaches that provide fertile ground for future research. Competition Many quantitative models are estimated at a brand level and reflect only the efforts of that sole brand. For example, in many customer satisfaction studies, attention is often paid to the consumers of a particular client brand or service in an effort to portray their performance and derive the important drivers of satisfaction. Financial optimization models are then often constructed to examine where a company should invest its resources to best improve sales, retention, word of mouth, loyalty, etc. These studies need to occur in a fully competitive setting where one derives a full picture of the competitive market place. Managers need to know the relative importance of the drivers of satisfaction for their brand/service as well as for their competitors. In addition, knowledge of the relative performance of their brand relative to competitors is necessary information for strategy formation. Ideally, one would hope to see modeling efforts which also examine cross effects in terms of how Brand A’s policy affects other brands. Over time, competitive dynamics are also important as discussed next. Dynamics As seen in the various chapters, this can assume many different manifestations. Related to the previous category above related to competition, it is often necessary to examine competitive dynamics as opposed to comparative statics where the modeler of the future examines simultaneous and/or sequential optimization by each of the competitors in a market place in a game theoretic context. In such a manner, it will not be the case that all competitors end up enacting the same exact identical strategies. Alternatively, the models of the future should be adaptive and have the ability to "learn" from past data, as well as benefit from informed managerial expert input and constraints. Parameter values that change/adapt during the duration of the data are also a desirable feature. Non-Linearity Traditional linear response functions do not typically yield realistic normative managerial guidelines or optimized solutions. End point solutions that suggest "all or none" types of resource allocations are useless in most realistic Marketing applications. A large amount of work is required in this area as Marketing often lacks the strong theory necessary to provide such insight regarding the models that are constructed. In addition, multiple objective functions need to be accommodated with the use of multicriterion optimization methods Endogeneity Often times, there are hidden effects embedded in the various independent variables the Marketer believes are exogenous and truly independent. These may be due to effect of lagged variables, managerial decision making practice, etc. To ignore such effects, threatens the integrity of the models Marketers construct. For example, in traditional regression models, such endogeneity often produces a correlation between the independent variable in question and the error term, often resulting in biased estimates when employing ordinary least-squares estimation. Moderation/Mediation There are times particularly in regression approaches where the relationships between two variables are affected by values of a third variable. In such cases, we need to employ selected interaction effects to measure such moderated effects. Interaction effects are often needed to model the synergistic or catalytic effects of various independent variables. Alternatively, in a mediation regression model, rather than hypothesizing a direct causal relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable, a mediational model hypothesizes that the independent variable influences the mediator variable, which in turn influences the dependent variable. Thus, such moderator and mediator variables serve to clarify the nature of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Marketers need to be aware of such potential inter-relationships. Models Guided by Theory Ideally, the models we construct should be more than just data analytic structures which approximate the relationships found in the data. Where possible, models should be constructed on the basis of available sound Marketing theory describing the process being modeled. One of the advantages of structural equation models is that one can utilize such a methodology to test and implement some a priori theory describing the relationship or causal nature of various inter-related constructs. This feature has been lacking in the general modeling efforts to date. A major reason for this is due to the lack of adequate theory development for most of the processes encountered in Marketing. For example, we have no solid Marketing theory regarding the structure of marketing mix response models. Thus progress must be advanced in such areas so that the models we construct are more robust and explainable. I wish to personally thank the co-editors and various authors of the "Future of Marketing" for opening the door to get a glimpse of the future in the field of Marketing. The hope is that this new book will provide fresh ideas to guide future research to improve the field of Marketing and define the next generation of research efforts as the torch gets passed to future generations.

The End of Normal

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The End of Normal by James K. Galbraith Book Summary:

From one of the most respected economic thinkers and writers of our time, a brilliant argument about the history and future of economic growth. The years since the Great Crisis of 2008 have seen slow growth, high unemployment, falling home values, chronic deficits, a deepening disaster in Europe—and a stale argument between two false solutions, “austerity” on one side and “stimulus” on the other. Both sides and practically all analyses of the crisis so far take for granted that the economic growth from the early 1950s until 2000—interrupted only by the troubled 1970s—represented a normal performance. From this perspective, the crisis was an interruption, caused by bad policy or bad people, and full recovery is to be expected if the cause is corrected. The End of Normal challenges this view. Placing the crisis in perspective, Galbraith argues that the 1970s already ended the age of easy growth. The 1980s and 1990s saw only uneven growth, with rising inequality within and between countries. And the 2000s saw the end even of that—despite frantic efforts to keep growth going with tax cuts, war spending, and financial deregulation. When the crisis finally came, stimulus and automatic stabilization were able to place a floor under economic collapse. But they are not able to bring about a return to high growth and full employment. In The End of Normal, “Galbraith puts his pessimism into an engaging, plausible frame. His contentions deserve the attention of all economists and serious financial minds across the political spectrum” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Four Futures

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Four Futures by Peter Frase Book Summary:

“It is easier to imagine the end of the world,” the theorist Fredric Jameson has remarked, “than to imagine the end of capitalism.”Jacobin Editor Peter Frase argues that technological advancements and environmental threats will inevitably push our society beyond capitalism, andFour Futures imagines just how this might look. Extrapolating possible futures from current changes the world is now experiencing, and drawing upon speculative fictions to illustrate how these futures might be realized, Four Futures examines communism, rentism, socialism, and exterminism – or in other words, the socialisms we may reach if a resurgent Left is successful and the barbarisms we may be consigned to if those movements fail.

Capitalist Realism

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher Book Summary:

After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system - a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. The book analyses the development and principal features of this capitalist realism as a lived ideological framework. Using examples from politics, films, fiction, work and education, it argues that capitalist realism colours all areas of contemporary experience. But it will also show that, because of a number of inconsistencies and glitches internal to the capitalist reality program capitalism in fact is anything but realistic.

Last Futures

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Last Futures by Douglas Murphy Book Summary:

Whatever happened to the last utopian dreams of the city? In the late 1960s the world was faced with impending disaster: the height of the Cold War, the end of oil and the decline of great cities throughout the world. Out of this crisis came a new generation that hoped to build a better future, influenced by visions of geodesic domes, walking cities and a meaningful connection with nature. In this brilliant work of cultural history, architect Douglas Murphy traces the lost archeology of the present day through the works of thinkers and designers such as Buckminster Fuller, the ecological pioneer Stewart Brand, the Archigram architects who envisioned the Plug-In City in the ’60s, as well as co-operatives in Vienna, communes in the Californian desert and protesters on the streets of Paris. In this mind-bending account of the last avant-garde, we see not just the source of our current problems but also some powerful alternative futures. From the Hardcover edition.

Uncharted

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Uncharted by Margaret Heffernan Book Summary:

From former CEO and popular TED speaker Margaret Heffernan comes a timely and enlightening book that equips you with the tools you need to face the future with confidence and courage. How can we think about the future? What do we need to do—and who do we need to be? In her bold and invigorating new book, distinguished businesswoman and author Margaret Heffernan explores the people and organizations who aren’t daunted by uncertainty. We are addicted to prediction, desperate for certainty about the future. But the complexity of modern life won’t provide that; experts in forecasting are reluctant to look more than 400 days out. History doesn’t repeat itself and even genetics won’t tell you everything you want to know. Tomorrow remains uncharted territory, but Heffernan demonstrates how we can forge ahead with agility. Drawing on a wide array of people and places, Uncharted traces long-term projects that shrewdly evolved over generations to meet the unpredictable challenges of every new age. Heffernan also looks at radical exercises and experiments that redefined standard practices by embracing different perspectives and testing fresh approaches. Preparing to confront a variable future provides the antidote to passivity and prediction. Ranging freely through history and from business to science, government to friendships, this refreshing book challenges us to mine our own creativity and humanity for the capacity to create the futures we want and can believe in.

The Future We Choose

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Future We Choose by Christiana Figueres,Tom Rivett-Carnac Book Summary:

Climate change: it is arguably the most urgent and consequential issue humankind has ever faced. How we address it in the next thirty years will determine the kind of world we will live in and will bequeath to our children and to theirs. In The Future We Choose, Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac--who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015--have written a cautionary but optimistic book about the world's changing climate and the fate of humanity. The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a carbon neutral, regenerative world. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can and must do to fend off disaster.

The Dark Half by Stephen King Book Summary:

Master storyteller Stephen King presents the classic “wondrously frightening” (Publishers Weekly) #1 New York Times bestseller about a writer’s horrific and haunting pseudonym. “I’m back...I’m back from the dead and you don’t seem glad to see me at all, you ungrateful son of a bitch.” After thirteen years of international bestseller stardom with his works of violent crime fiction, author George Stark is officially declared dead—revealed by a national magazine to have been killed at the hands of the man who created him: the once well-regarded but now obscure writer Thad Beaumont. Thad’s even gone so far as to stage a mock burial of his wildly successful pseudonym, complete with tombstone and the epitaph “Not a Very Nice Guy.” Although on the surface, it seems that Thad can finally concentrate on his own novels, there’s a certain unease at the prospect of leaving George Stark behind. But that’s nothing compared to the horror about to descend upon Thad’s new life. There are the vicious, out-of-control nightmares, for starters. And how is he able to explain the fact that everyone connected to George Stark’s untimely demise is now meeting a brutal end of their own in a pattern of homicidal savagery...and why each blood-soaked crime scene has Thad’s fingerprints all over it? Thad Beaumont may have once believed that George Stark was running out of things to say, but he’s going to find out just how wrong he is...

The Future of the Professions

Where Futures End Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Future of the Professions by Richard Susskind,Daniel Susskind Book Summary:

This book predicts the decline of today's professions and introduces the people and systems that will replace them. In an internet-enhanced society, according to Richard Susskind and Daniel Susskind, we will neither need nor want doctors, teachers, accountants, architects, the clergy, consultants, lawyers, and many others, to work as they did in the 20th century. The Future of the Professions explains how increasingly capable technologies - from telepresence to artificial intelligence - will place the 'practical expertise' of the finest specialists at the fingertips of everyone, often at no or low cost and without face-to-face interaction. The authors challenge the 'grand bargain' - the arrangement that grants various monopolies to today's professionals. They argue that our current professions are antiquated, opaque and no longer affordable, and that the expertise of their best is enjoyed only by a few. In their place, they propose five new models for producing and distributing expertise in society. The book raises profound policy issues, not least about employment (they envisage a new generation of 'open-collared workers') and about control over online expertise (they warn of new 'gatekeepers') - in an era when machines become more capable than human beings at most tasks. Based on the authors' in-depth research of more than a dozen professions, and illustrated by numerous examples from each, this is the first book to assess and question the future of the professions in the 21st century.

The Shape of Things to Come by Herbert George Wells Book Summary:

"The Shape of Things to Come" is one of the great classics of science fiction. Originally written in 1929, this masterly work of science fiction has already confirmed H G Wells' status as a remarkable soothsayer, and provides glimpses of what is perhaps yet to come. The book is written as a sort of historical account. It tells of how a world state could be considered an answer to Earth's problems. After a large plague wipes out much of humanity, a dictatorship takes over, taking away all religion and uniting the world. If someone opposes the dictatorship, they are given a choice to commit suicide in an environment of their choice. However, the dictatorship is later overthrown and the world state dissolves. Spanning the years from 1929 to 2105, it describes future generations and predicts the advent of wars, advancing technology and sweeping cultural changes.

Evil Geniuses

Evil Geniuses by Kurt Andersen Book Summary:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • When did America give up on fairness? The bestselling author of Fantasyland tells the epic history of how America decided that big business gets whatever it wants, only the rich get richer, and nothing should ever change—and charts a way back to the future. “The one book everyone must read as we figure out how to rebuild our country.”—Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs and Leonardo da Vinci During the twentieth century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the superrich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled. The clock was turned back on a century of economic progress, making greed good, workers powerless, and the market all-powerful while weaponizing nostalgia, lifting up an oligarchy that served only its own interests, and leaving the huge majority of Americans with dwindling economic prospects and hope. Why and how did America take such a wrong turn? In this deeply researched and brilliantly woven cultural, economic, and political chronicle, Kurt Andersen offers a fresh, provocative, and eye-opening history of America’s undoing, naming names, showing receipts, and unsparingly assigning blame—to the radical right in economics and the law, the high priests of high finance, a complacent and complicit Establishment, and liberal “useful idiots,” among whom he includes himself. Only a writer with Andersen’s crackling energy, deep insight, and ability to connect disparate dots and see complex systems with clarity could make such a book both intellectually formidable and vastly entertaining. And only a writer of Andersen’s vision could reckon with our current high-stakes inflection point, and show the way out of this man-made disaster.
