The Unseen by , Book Summary:

Shortlisted for the 2017 International Man Booker Prize Shortlisted for the 2018 International Dublin Literary Award Islanders are never afraid, if they were, they wouldn’t be able to live here. Born on the Norwegian island that bears her name, Ingrid Barrøy’s world is circumscribed by storm-scoured rocks and the moods of the sea by which her family lives and dies. But her father dreams of building a quay that will end their isolation, and her mother longs for the island of her youth, and the country faces its own sea change: the advent of a modern world, and all its attendant unpredictability and violence. Brilliantly translated into English by Don Bartlett and Don Shaw, The Unseen is a profoundly moving exploration of family, resilience, and fate.

Horizon of the Unseen by Corinne Randall Book Summary:

Horizon of the Unseen is a compilation of quotes taken from the eternal and universal truths that exist in all of the world's spiritual traditions. The twelve themes are interpreted visually by the author, each page containing full colour reproductions. This book grew out of a series of guided meditations run within a counselling centre. The thematic mood of each meditation was then used as inspiration for painting. The artwork describes a meditative space and therefore works in parallel to the text. The diversity of themes result in a spectrum of approaches ranging from figurative to abstract or conceptual. They are drawn together by the metaphors contained within the quotes, that relate the signs and attributes of the physical world back to the One unknowable Essence. We live in an age of extremes. On one hand we see the disintegration of society reflected in much contemporary art. Out of these growing pains, however, a new holistic paradigm is emerging. Artist in Sanskrit means one who sees things fitting together. By redefining the importance of spirituality to visual art this book strives to demonstrate this obvious but often overlooked purpose of art.The format is simple and accessible but also contains deeper layers of underlying meaning. Horizon of the Unseen is therefore suitable as a gift book, as an aid for meditation or as a source of creative inspiration.

A Hope in the Unseen by Ron Suskind Book Summary:

The inspiring, true coming-of-age story of a ferociously determined young man who, armed only with his intellect and his willpower, fights his way out of despair. In 1993, Cedric Jennings was a bright and ferociously determined honor student at Ballou, a high school in one of Washington D.C.’s most dangerous neighborhoods, where the dropout rate was well into double digits and just 80 students out of more than 1,350 boasted an average of B or better. At Ballou, Cedric had almost no friends. He ate lunch in a classroom most days, plowing through the extra work he asked for, knowing that he was really competing with kids from other, harder schools. Cedric Jennings’s driving ambition—which was fully supported by his forceful mother—was to attend a top college. In September 1995, after years of near superhuman dedication, he realized that ambition when he began as a freshman at Brown University. But he didn't leave his struggles behind. He found himself unprepared for college: he struggled to master classwork and fit in with the white upper-class students. Having traveled too far to turn back, Cedric was left to rely on his intelligence and his determination to maintain hope in the unseen—a future of acceptance and reward. In this updated edition, A Hope in the Unseen chronicles Cedric’s odyssey during his last two years of high school, follows him through his difficult first year at Brown, and tells the story of his subsequent successes in college and the world of work. Eye-opening, sometimes humorous, and often deeply moving, A Hope in the Unseen weaves a crucial new thread into the rich and ongoing narrative of the American experience.

Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson Book Summary:

A tour-de-force of a debut that blends classic fantasy -- the fascinating, frightening, sometimes-invisible world of the djinn -- that's genies to some of us -- with the 21st-century reality of a super-hacker in mortal danger in a repressive security state on the Arabian Gulf. Alif (that's his handle) is a brilliant young superhacker working out of his mother's small apartment, and his computer has just been breached. While Alif scrambles to protect his clients -- dissidents and outlaws alike, whoever needs to hide their digital traces, he and his friends realize that they've been found by 'the Hand' -- maybe a person, maybe a program, but definitely able to find anyone, and that could lead to prison, or worse. Alif, with the help of his childhood friend Dina, an ancient book sent to him in secret by his lost love (who may be frighteningly connected to the Hand) and a terrifying protector who almost looks human, must go underground -- or rather, find a way into the hidden world of the djinn. They wrote the mysterious book centuries ago, and have knowledge that might just allow Alif to infiltrate the most sophisticated information technology the world has ever seen, and perhaps save himself, his loved ones, and freedom itself. With shades of Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, William Gibson, and the timeless Thousand and One Nights, Alif the Unseen is a tour-de-force debut with major potential -- a masterful, addictive blend of the ancient and the more-than-modern, smuggled inside an irresistible page-turner.

Tainna by Norma Dunning Book Summary:

Drawing on both lived experience and cultural memory, Norma Dunning brings together six powerful new short stories centred on modern-day Inuk characters in Tainna. Ranging from homeless to extravagantly wealthy, from spiritual to jaded, young to elderly, and even from alive to deceased, Dunning’s characters are united by shared feelings of alienation, displacement and loneliness resulting from their experiences in southern Canada. In Tainna—meaning “the unseen ones” and pronounced Da‐e‐nn‐a—a fraught reunion between sisters Sila and Amak ends in an uneasy understanding. From the spirit realm, Chevy Bass watches over his imperilled grandson, Kunak. And in the title story, the broken-hearted Bunny wanders onto a golf course on a freezing night, when a flock of geese stand vigil until her body is discovered by a kind stranger. Norma Dunning’s masterful storytelling uses humour and incisive detail to create compelling characters who discover themselves in a hostile land where prejudice, misogyny and inequity are most often found hidden in plain sight. There, they must rely on their wits, artistic talent, senses of humour and spirituality for survival; and there, too, they find solace in shining moments of reconnection with their families and communities.

Seeing the Unseen by Joe Beam Book Summary:

There's a WAR Going on...and Your FAITH Is at Stake. Imagine for a minute that you are in a war. You're on the frontlines. You see the explosions And you smell the smoke. Wounded loved ones are falling around you, and you want to fight back; but the unseen enemy seems to be everywhere, and he seems to have the advantage. If only you could know the plans and strategies of this unseen enemy, then you could know where he will strike next and how to fight him. This war, of course, is not between two countries and is not waged with earthly weapons, but it is very real, and you are living in it right now. This war is spiritual, and the enemy you fight is not of this world but of the unseen spiritual world. In this newly revised and updated bestseller, Joe Beam reveal Satan's powerful weaponry -- his lies, deceptions, and manipulations -- and unmasks his strategy to destroy your life and those you care for. This is not a book of wild sensationalism; rather, it is a dedicated study of God's Word and a sharing of stories of tragedy and triumph. Open this book, uncover your enemy, and prepare for victory.

Sense the Unseen by Serenella D'Ercole Book Summary:

The purpose of this handbook is to open the doors to the development and knowledge of the extrasensory faculties, giving each of you the keys to access intuitive, psychic and telepathic abilities in full autonomy, because you are all sensitive and endowed with these qualities, which are often attributed only to particular and fortunate groups of people. Rather, you are not yet aware of it and you have forgotten how to bring to your consciousness these precious powers, with which your ancestors lived in a completely spontaneous way. These activities are commonly referred to as "extra", in fact they are very normal quality of mind that everyone can access, without exception. It is only a matter of refining the subtle senses more so that we can take what exists beyond the boundaries of matter, beyond time and space. You will succeed through the many practical exercises focused on reading the Aura and The Subtle Bodies, the analysis of individual colours, telepathy, Second Sight in all its applications, bilocation, psychometry of objects and the places, simple and effective exercises that you can do alone or in the company of friends with your own passion for the extrasensitive world. Not only that, but the development of psychic faculties will not remain an end in itself, because when you begin to transcend the limits of space and time, you will realize that you can tangibly take the greatest quality that most belongs to you rightfully: freedom. In fact, you will learn to take over your life, to act in the real world, because you will become aware of what is beyond the normal perception of the senses, realizing that the world as it appears is just a wishful thinking. You will come into contact with other dimensions, less concrete certainly, but no less real. You will walk in a new perception of reality, step by step, in which everything will seem to indicate that in life nothing will be as it seems or as it appears. You will regain your truest powers, because you will be more and more aware of your multidimensional Being. It will be your internal feelings that will play a decisive role in all these new experiences. It will be necessary to know how to listen to them, letting them flow freely, without judgment, to perceive their language, which can be composed of symbols, images, sounds, smells, which you will sense at another level, because the senses that will be used will be the subtle ones, not physical ones, to lead you to see, hear, smell, touch and taste all that does not appear in the sensitive world, but in the ultrasensitive one. I could have written this book in many ways, but I looked for the easiest and most direct way, so that it would reach everyone. For this reason, I tried not to enter into considerations of an overly philosophical or spiritual character, which would have been my most natural way of expression, because I would have risked, perhaps, not to embrace even that part of readers anyway interested in learning to "sense the unseen." I am sure that all of you will be able to read and understand the messages between the lines of this book, to bring them on all levels and plans of existence, physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual, so that you can achieve with lightness and extreme ease the life that you really want to live, without struggle and without effort, because you will have finally learned to enter the flow and let go of everything that weighs down and nullifies your life. Learning extrasensory faculties leads to surprising benefits as a natural consequence. First of all, a greater awareness of who you are and what you want to achieve, because by opening your mind and your heart to listening to what you perceive beyond the normal use of the senses, it will give you such clarity as to make you the true creators of your reality . You will be able to receive the answers you have wanted to receive for so long and too long. These are answers that will take you far along the path of your earthly life. You will soon realize that you are finally free of old mental habits, creating new and more productive habits, awakening from that long sleep to bring you to new levels of understanding and personal growth. You will notice how your creativity and imagination will increase, because extrasensory experiences go to stimulate areas of the brain that are not normally solicited and exploited in the course of daily life. One recommendation: do not be tempted by skipping some chapters of the book to directly access the exercises, however very practical, detailed and attractive, because you would miss those basic and useful parts for the best success exercises themselves, which were presented not in random form, but in a very precise order. This journey from matter to the unseen will lead you into your deepest potentials, which wait for nothing more to be rediscovered and awakened, so that you can first-hand access the exploration of your true being, with full confidence in your unlimited potential. Then everything will be possible: to transcend time and space, to overcome the limits of matter, exploring firsthand faculties that you did not even think you had, beyond all expectations, making you finally aware that what lives beyond matter, a world of invisible energies, it had always been waiting for you. *Winner of the prestigious Norwegian Booksellers' Prize* *A Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection (Holiday 2011)* A glorious evocation of a Norwegian childhood in the early sixties by an author short-listed for the 2009 Dublin IMPAC Award Little Finn lives with his mother in an apartment in a working-class suburb of Oslo. Life is a struggle to make ends meet, but he does not mind. When his mother decides to take a lodger to help pay the bills, he watches with interest as she freshens up their small apartment with new wallpaper and a sofa paid for in installments. He befriends their new male lodger, whose television is more tempting to him than his mother would like. When a half sister whom he never knew joins the household, Finn takes her under his wing over an everlasting summer on Håøya Island. But he can't understand why everyone thinks his new sister is so different from every other child. Nor can he fathom his mother's painful secret, one that pushes them ever farther apart. As summer comes to a close, Finn must attempt to grasp the incomprehensible adult world and his place within it. Child Wonder is a powerful and unsentimental portrait of childhood. Roy Jacobsen, through the eyes of a child, has produced an immensely uplifting novel that shines with light and warmth.

Unseen by Sara Hagerty Book Summary:

Every heart longs to be seen and understood. Yet most of our lives is unwitnessed. We spend our days working, driving, parenting. We sometimes spend whole seasons feeling unnoticed and unappreciated. So how do we find contentment when we feel so hidden? In Unseen, Sara Hagerty suggests that this is exactly what God intended. He is the only One who truly knows us. He is the only One who understands the value of the unseen in our lives. When this truth seeps into our souls, we realize that only when we hide ourselves in God can we give ourselves to others in true freedom—and know the joy of a deeper relationship with the God who sees us. Our culture applauds what we can produce, what we can show, what we can upload to social media. Only when we give all of ourselves to God—unedited, abandoned, apparently wasteful in its lack of productivity—can we live out who God created us to be. As Hagerty writes, “Maybe my seemingly unproductive, looking-up-at-Him life produces awe among the angels.” Through an eloquent exploration of both personal and biblical story, Hagerty calls us to offer every unseen minute of our lives to God. God is in the secret places of our lives that no one else witnesses. But we’ve not been relegated to these places. We’ve been invited. We may be “wasting” ourselves in a hidden corner today: The cubicle on the fourth floor. The hospital bedside of an elderly parent. The laundry room. But these are the places God uses to meet us with a radical love. These are the places that produce the kind of unhinged love in us that gives everything at His feet, whether or not anyone else ever proclaims our name, whether or not anyone else ever sees. God’s invitation is not just for a season or a day. It is the question of our lives: “When no one else applauds you, when it makes no sense, when you see no results—will you waste your love on Me?”

Sight Unseen by David Carroll Book Summary:

A Note from David Caroll: My best friend got some terrible news when he was 13. After visiting the eye doctor, he was told he had Stargardt's disease; a rare eye condition that would leave him blind by the age of 18. At the time, my friend loved playing soccer, riding his bike, and jamming in a garage band. But as his vision deteriorated, he gave those hobbies up. He worried that he'd never get a girlfriend. He suffered depression, panic attacks, and eventually dropped out of school altogether. That was the first inspiration for Sight Unseen. The second one was Muriel Leeson's classic Oranges and UFO. I adored that book as a kid. I remember being captivated by Leeson's idea of a land where time didn't pass. When I put those two ideas together, I had the main plot of Sight Unseen. A 13-year-old boy (Finn) is losing his eyesight, and is understandably terrified of the future, but then he discovers a portal to Perpetuum-a place in the mountains where time stands still. There, Finn gets to be a 'normal' kid again-for as long as he wants. Perhaps even forever. Of course, magic always comes with a price, and Finn must eventually choose between his eyesight and his friends. Once he chooses, there's no going back.

A vast majority of the noblest intellects of the race have ever held to the idea that,—“There’s a divinity that shapes our ends, Rough hew them how we will.” By its influence they have been both consoled and strengthened under the pressures and in the exigencies of life.
