Venice, the Tourist Maze

The Tourist Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Venice, the Tourist Maze by Robert C. Davis,Garry R. Marvin Book Summary:

"The tourist Venice is Venice," Mary McCarthy once observed—a sentiment very much in line with what most of the fourteen million tourists who visit the city each year experience, but at the same time a painful reality for the 65,000 Venetians who actually live there. Venice is viewed from a new perspective in this engaging book, which offers a heady, one-city tour of tourism itself. Conducting readers from the beginnings of Venetian tourism in the late Middle Ages to its emergence as a form of mass entertainment in our time, the authors explore what happens when today's "industrial tourism" collides with an ancient and ever-more-fragile culture. Giving equal consideration to those who tour Venice and those who live there, their book affords rare insight into just what it is that the touring and the toured see, experience, and elicit from each other.

The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World

The Tourist Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World by Graham Dann Book Summary:

This book contains a selection of papers from the prestigious Research Committee on International Tourism presented at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association, Brisbane, Australia, July 2002. It provides a sociological and anthropological critique of existing tourism theory as well as some directions for its future development and research. While much of the present understanding of the tourist and tourism is grounded in metaphor (e.g. tourism as a sacred journey, tourism as play, the tourist as a child, etc.) such analogies need to be linked to transformations in tourism generating and receiving societies. Hence the focus on the tourist and everyday life, socio-psychological dimensions of the tourist experience, the tourist and conflicting expectations, and the tourist in a changing world.

The Tourist Gaze by John Urry Book Summary:

Tourism is both a key aspect of modern life and a substantial industry; yet its importance has been generally unrecognized by academic commentators. In this book John Urry sets out to construct a distinctive sociology of tourism. He demonstrates that tourism deserves attention not only in its own right but as a central element of broad cultural changes in contemporary society. are systematic ways of seeing what we as tourists look at and that these ways of seeing can be described and explained. John Urry develops this analysis through various levels - historical, economic, social, cultural and visual. its development as a global industry. The economic impact and complex social relations involved in international tourism are explored. Changing patterns of tourism are shown to be connected to the broader cultural changes of postmodernism and related to the role of the service and middle classes. The author argues that we are seeing a universalization of the tourist gaze and increasing confusion between tourism as it is conventionally understood and a host of other social practices - shopping, sport, culture, hobbies, leisure and education.

The vats are all covered with light roofs, which are moveable at pleasure, to admit the rays of the sun upon the water, or to' prevent the rain from mingling with it. The salt is removed from the vats twice or three times in the course of the summer. Salina is a mile and a half north of Syracuse. The first salt spring was discovered at this place by the Indians, from the circumstance of its being visited by deer and other animals. The Oswego Canal commences at this place, the surplus water of which is used for the purpose of forcing (by a powerful hydraulian) the salt water 85 feet up the hill into a large reservoir: It is forced up at the rate of 300 gallons per minute, whence it is conveyed by logs to the factories in the neighbourhood, which amount to 175 within a circuit of 7 miles. The'springs and works all belong to the State, to which the manufacturers pay imposts of 63 cents per barrel of 5 bushels, which are applied, according to the Constitution of the State, towards discharging the Canal debt. The Oswego Canal extends from Onondaga iake to lake Ontario, at Oswego. It includes 20 miles of the Oswego river. The whole distance is 38 miles. Geddes is a small village, 2 miles west of Syracuse. A number of valuable salt springs have been discovered at this place very recently. The manufacturing establishments are within a few rods of the canal. After pursuing its course 7 miles farther, the canal crosses Nine Mile Creek, by means of an aqueduct with two arches, under which the creek flows. Weed's Basin, 15 miles from Syracuse, contains about 60 houses. Auburn is 7 miles south, for which place stage leave daily. The State Prison is...

The Tourist's Gaze

The Tourist Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Tourist's Gaze by Glenn Hooper Book Summary:

Travel literature has been described by Jonathan Raban as "literature's red-light district". It defies peoples' beliefs, confuses expectations, crosses disciplinary boundaries and is linked to ethnography, journalism and biography. Yet for all that has managed to remain not only a visible but also an increasingly popular literary genre. This anthology makes an entertaining and insightful contribution to this engaging field. It includes extracts from well known writers, such as Thackeray, Boll and Chesterton, but also presents less familiar figures from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The seventy pieces collected here both offer sharp observations of the country and are equally revealing about the travelers themselves. Each extract, where possible, is prefaced by a brief biography of its author. For readers interested in the origins and historical role of travel writing in general, and how they relate to Ireland, the editor offers an illuminating introduction. This anthology presents illuminating snapshots of Ireland over two hundred years. It also provides insights into the varied perspectives of the travelers themselves, a perspective often influenced by contemporary political events such as the Great Famine, Home Rule, the Civil War and the Troubles. This anthology leaves the reader with an enduring image of Ireland's ability to fascinate and stimulate visitors through two centuries.

The Media and the Tourist Imagination

The Tourist Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Media and the Tourist Imagination by David Crouch,Rhona Jackson,Felix Thompson Book Summary:

Tourism studies and media studies both address key issues about how we perceive the world. They raise acute questions about how we relate local knowledge and immediate experience to wider global processes, and they both play a major role in creating our map of national and international cultures. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this book explores the interactions between tourism and media practices within a contemporary culture in which the consumption of images has become increasingly significant. A number of common themes and concerns arise, and the contributions included are divided between those: written from media studies awareness perspective, concerned with the way the media imagines travel and tourism written from the point of view of the study of tourism, considering how tourism practices are affected or altered by the media that attempt a direct comparison between the practices of tourism and the media. Incorporating case study material from the UK, the Caribbean, Australia, the US, France and Switzerland, this significant text - ideal for students of culture, media and tourism studies - discusses tourism and the media as separate processes through which identity is constructed in relation to space and place.

Mediating the Tourist Experience

The Tourist Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Mediating the Tourist Experience by Dr Caroline Scarles,Dr Jo-Anne Lester Book Summary:

Traditionally, tourism media has referred to the image of destinations constructed through media texts such as brochures and postcards, with increasing attention towards other mediascapes such as films and television. Yet, with prolific advancements in technologies of media communication, such traditional formats have experienced a shift in the productive and consumptive practices through which they come into being. The possibilities of production and subsequent consumption are unequivocally changing the ways in which tourists imagine, understand and engage with destinations. This book therefore explores the role of tourism media and mediating practices in the development of non-linear processes of communication and understanding as both producers and consumers come together to negotiate the tourist experience. In varying ways it examines the emergent relationships and connections between media practices and tourism practices, everyday experiences and encounters of place. Collectively, the authors in this book address a range of media and technologies from brochures, television, video and film to mediated virtual spaces, such as e-brochures, Internet cultures, social networks, and Google Earth. In doing so, the book highlights the continued significance of media in tourism contexts; recognising both traditional and newer technologies, and the non-linear, continuous cycle of mediated representations and experiences.

The Economic Geography of the Tourist Industry by Keith G. Debbage,Dimitri Ioannides Book Summary:

The Economic Geography of the Tourist Industry bridges the gap between tourism research and economic geography by bringing together leading academics in geography, planning and tourism. The authors explain tourism's definitions and examine whether tourism can be categorized as an industry. They provide detailed analyses of key sectors, such as tour operators, airlines and the hotel industry from a broad international perspective. The book also explores issues such as business cycles, labour dynamics, entrepreneurship and the role of the state in tourism and concludes that the production of tourism-related services has characteristics commonly associated with 'harder' production sectors, such manufacturing and producer services.
