A Life Outdoors

The September Garden [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Life Outdoors by Robert D. Sopuck Book Summary:

The 21st Century is a time of profound and wrenching change. The phrase "stop the world, I want to get off" never seemed more appropriate. Robert Sopuck caught his first fish at age 4 in the presence of his father. That fish set off a lifetime of exploration of the natural world. He and his bride, the inestimable Caroline, live on 480 acres of wild land south of Manitoba's Riding Mountain National Park. This book is about their way of life as modern country people who have developed a profound relationship with the land, wildlife, and the ecosystem that supports them. This book describes a way of living with Nature via detailed, funny, informative, and sometimes poignant essays. The first essay, "It All Started with This Fish," describes the beginning of this journey while the second last, "Hunting with Dad" describes his emotions while speaking at his father's funeral about their shared outdoor experiences that made him who he is. In between there are hunting stories, "how to" essays on wild food preparation, and descriptions of unique wildlife experiences. "A Life Outdoors" will show the reader that there is a way of life "out there" that is authentic, joyous, and profound.

L_onide Massine and the 20th Century Ballet

The September Garden [Pdf/ePub] eBook

L_onide Massine and the 20th Century Ballet by Leslie Norton Book Summary:

The great Russian choreographer Leonide Massine was the most important figure in modernist ballet in the 1930s, known for works such as Gaite Parisienne and The Three-Cornered Hat. His versatility and scope made his choreography the most representative of the century. Whatever period he portrayed, his style flowed freely and unselfconsciously. His character ballets dealt not with stereotypes but individuals, and his symphonic ballets proved how great music could be employed without demeaning it. Like his mentor Diaghilev, he strove to bring music, painting, and poetry to his ballets. Massine was responsible for the first resolutely abstract ballet and the first true fusions of ballet and modern dance. This work provides a biography of Massine and a detailed analysis of his major ballets, including those for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and American Ballet Theatre. The work integrates biographical study with an examination of Massine's works from an array of perspectives. By examining the music and composers, set design, and literary sources, it places the work in the larger context of the dance, opera, major visual art movements, literature and theater of the period. Analyses of ballets include synopses, scenery and costumes, music, choreography, critical survey and summary. The work concludes with an epilogue summarizing Massine's impact on the development of ballet in the twentieth century, and includes both informal and performance photographs.

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden

The September Garden [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden by Joy W. Kraft Book Summary:

Opening day, September 18, 1875, dawned sunless and chilly, a shaky start for the second zoological garden in the United States. Exhibits were unfinished, and animals remained crated. The polar bear had not arrived, and the collection on display included a feeble tiger, a blind hyena, an elephant rescued from a bankrupt circus, a talking crow, eight small monkeys, and 400 birds. Despite the rough start, the venture by bird-lover Andrew Erkenbrecher and friends blossomed into a top-tier zoo inspiring a passion for nature-a champion of endangered species with its own college-preparatory high school and an unrivaled commitment to education, research, and innovative breeding programs. It has survived The Perils of Pauline economics as stubborn Cincinnatians came to its rescue time after time, charmed by animals and events found here: chimps Mr. and Mrs. Rooney, Susie the Gorilla who took tea and smoked Chesterfields, Rodney the boxing kangaroo, Martha the last passenger pigeon on earth, outdoor operas, and dancing under the stars.
