Trouble the Saints by , Book Summary:

“Juju assassins, alternate history, a gritty New York crime story...in a word: awesome.” —N.K. Jemisin, New York Times bestselling author of The Fifth Season The dangerous magic of The Night Circus meets the powerful historical exploration of The Underground Railroad in Alaya Dawn Johnson's timely and unsettling novel, set against the darkly glamorous backdrop of New York City, where an assassin falls in love and tries to change her fate at the dawn of World War II. Amid the whir of city life, a young woman from Harlem is drawn into the glittering underworld of Manhattan, where she’s hired to use her knives to strike fear among its most dangerous denizens. Ten years later, Phyllis LeBlanc has given up everything—not just her own past, and Dev, the man she loved, but even her own dreams. Still, the ghosts from her past are always by her side—and history has appeared on her doorstep to threaten the people she keeps in her heart. And so Phyllis will have to make a harrowing choice, before it’s too late—is there ever enough blood in the world to wash clean generations of injustice? Trouble the Saints is a dazzling, daring novel—a magical love story, a compelling exposure of racial fault lines—and an altogether brilliant and deeply American saga. My Life with the Saints by James Martin Book Summary:

One of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of the Year — Winner of a Christopher Award — Winner of a Catholic Press Association Book Award Meet some surprising friends of God in this warm and wonderful memoir James Martin has led an entirely modern life: from a lukewarm Catholic childhood, to an education at the Wharton School of Business, to the executive fast track at General Electric, to ministry as a Jesuit priest, to a busy media career in Manhattan. But at every step he has been accompanied by some surprising friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. For many, these holy men and women remain just historical figures. For Martin, they are intimate companions. "They pray for me, offer me comfort, give me examples of discipleship, and help me along the way," he writes. The author is both engaging and specific about the help and companionship he has received. When his pride proves troublesome, he seeks help from Thomas Merton, the monk and writer who struggled with egotism. In sickness he turns to Thérèse of Lisieux, who knew about the boredom and self-pity that come with illness. Joan of Arc shores up his flagging courage. Aloysius Gonzaga deepens his compassion. Pope John XXIII helps him to laugh and not take life too seriously. Martin's inspiring, witty, and always fascinating memoir encompasses saints from the whole of Christian history— from St. Peter to Dorothy Day. His saintly friends include Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Mother Teresa, and other beloved figures. They accompany the author on a lifelong pilgrimage that includes stops in a sunlit square of a French town, a quiet retreat house on a New England beach, the gritty housing projects of inner-city Chicago, the sprawling slums of Nairobi, and a gorgeous Baroque church in Rome. This rich, vibrant, stirring narrative shows how the saints can help all of us find our way in the world. "In a cross between Holden Caulfield and Thomas Merton, James Martin has written one of the best spiritual memoirs in years." —Robert Ellsberg, author of All Saints "It isn't often that a new and noteworthy book comes along in this genre, but we have reason to celebrate My Life with the Saints. It is earmarked for longevity. It will endure as an important and uncommon contribution to religious writing." —Doris Donnelly, America "An account . . . that is as delightful as it is instructive." —First Things "In delightful prose Martin recounts incidents, both perilous and funny, that have prompted him to turn to the saints, and in doing so shows us a new way of living out a devotion that is as old and universal as the Church." —Avery Cardinal Dulles, SJ, Fordham University "An outstanding and often hilarious memoir." —Publishers Weekly "Martin's final word for us is as Jungian as it is Catholic: God does not want us to be like Mother Teresa or Dorothy Day. God wants us to be most fully ourselves." —The Washington Post Book World

When the Saints by Sarah Mian Book Summary:

Is it possible to redeem a family name that has been spoken as a curse word for generations? A decade after being cast off to live with strangers, Tabby Saint returns to Solace River, Nova Scotia, to find her childhood home deserted. She quickly latches on to the lonely tavern-keeper, West, who informs her that her family was run out of town. Tabby heads out to nearby Jubilant to find the fragments of her family: her addict sister, Poppy, and her two young kids; her brothers, Bird and Jackie, one crippled by a vicious attack and the other holding a dangerous grudge against the men responsible; a threadbare version of the bulletproof mother she remembers; and an ailing father, a man so vile he is unworthy of forgiveness even on his deathbed. Irreverent and mouthy as they ever were, the Saints are still a lightning rod for trouble. When a new storm arises, Tabby must choose whether to stay or run back the way she came. Original, gut-wrenching and incessantly hilarious, When the Saints is the story of a family of outsiders whose redemption might be found in what they longed to escape: each other.

The Saints of Salvation by Peter F. Hamilton Book Summary:

With refreshing determination and hopeful grit, humanity activates a bold endgame against an alien invasion in the finale of a series heralded as “a modern classic” (Stephen Baxter) from “one of the finest writers the genre has produced” (Gareth L. Powell). Humanity is struggling to hold out against a hostile takeover by an alien race that claims to be on a religious mission to bring all sentient life to its God at the End of Time. But while billions of cocooned humans fill the holds of the Olyix’s deadly arkships, humankind is playing an even longer game than the aliens may have anticipated. From an ultra-secret spy mission to one of the grandest battles ever seen, no strategy is off the table. Will a plan millennia in the making finally be enough to defeat this seemingly unstoppable enemy? And what secrets are the Olyix truly hiding in their most zealously protected stronghold? With his trademark optimism about humanity’s tenacity and capacity for greatness, Peter F. Hamilton wraps up this brilliant saga with a bang—and reminds us why freedom of choice is the most important freedom there is.

For All the Saints by Robert Kolb Book Summary:

Martyrs have long played a vital role in Christian life, thought, theology, and piety. Robert Kolb, an acknowledged authority on the history of the Lutheran Reformation in Germany, offers a thorough and illuminating analysis of the way German Lutherans changed the perceptions of martyrdom and sainthood. Protestant reformers professed that providential power over daily human life was reserved for God alone, and that mediation with God is provided by Jesus Christ alone. Martyrs and saints could no longer be worshiped or act as intercessors. But this did not mean their absence from the faith and piety of sixteenth-century Protestants. Instead, holy people were regarded as those who confessed the word and in that confession demonstrated and advertised the power of God. This book arose in response to some vexing questions: Why is the first of a long and distinguished line of Protestant martyrologists, Ludwig Rabus, the least noted? Why would he, a German Lutheran, have composed a book of martyrs? Kolb suggests that the answers are complex—they involve differences in historical and political situations and in specific dogmatic emphases of each reformation. Kolb’s diligent research led him well beyond Rabus’s martyrbook. His work encompasses material from the writings and biographies of Luther and Melanchthon, Wittenberg chronicles and calendars, and hymns and songs. The analysis of this material makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the Lutheran Reformation and of the changing roles of saints and martyrs in the history of Christianity.

The Power to Comprehend with All the Saints by Wallace M. Alston Jr.,Cynthia A. Jarvis Book Summary:

The Power to Comprehend with All the Saints seeks to bring the pastoral voice into conversation with both the academy and the church in order to present a comprehensive perspective on how a theologically substantive ministry comes into being and what difference a theological orientation to the vocation makes in pastoral practice. / The contributors argue for the renewal of the church and its ministry, offering ways to regain its identity as a theological community and addressing the trivialization of the pastoral identity too often engendered by embracing management strategies rather than the Spirit?s call. It is only when the church attends faithfully and consistently to its primary tasks of preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and administration that the enlivening and empowering of the church is given and received as a gift. Here men and women on the front line of the church?s ministry thoughtfully consider how theological awareness is formed in a person and how this awareness determines the form and content of pastoral ministry.

Chasing the Saints by Donna Pucciani Book Summary:

Donna Pucciani's third book of poetry explores the relationship of the human to the divine through the lives of the saints. Pucciani's poems are not "your mama's" lives of the saints but rather meditations on the varieties of holiness espoused by these fascinating people. The poems are both spiritual and human, comic and serious. They challenge literate, discerning readers of any and all religions or none at all to think about things transcendent and to realize that sanctity comes only to those who are not afraid to be fully human.

A Swan Among the Saints by Douglas Milewski Book Summary:

Death only begins the adventure. After Targa get killed reviving a long dead god, she finds that she must work off her mortal sins. Dedicating herself to the service of Gedimimas, they set off across the universe to restore his power. With them travels her new husband, the dead Phoenix Emperor, who has his own host of sins to work off. To complicate matters, when she’d been alive, Targa had signed a standardized dragonrider contract, one that had specified on her death, she was obligated to work for the Red Lady, the goddess of lies and deceit. In fact, all her dragon rider sisters had signed this contract. Seeing this injustice before her, Targa swears to take on the Red Lady, freeing her sisters from their eternal servitude, even if that takes wreaking chaos across the heavens themselves.
