The One Best System

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One Best System by David B. Tyack Book Summary:

The One Best System a major new interpretation of what actually happened in the development of one of America's most influential institutions. At the same time it is a narrative in which the participants themselves speak out: farm children and factory workers, frontier teachers and city superintendents, black parents and elite reformers. And it encompasses both the achievements and the failures of the system: the successful assimilation of immigrants, racism and class bias; the opportunities offered to some, the injustices perpetuated for others. Mr. Tyack has placed his colorful, wide-ranging view of history within a broad new framework drawn from the most recent work in history, sociology, and political science. He looks at the politics and inertia, the ideologies and power struggles that formed the basis of our present educational system. Using a variety of social perspectives and methods of analysis, David Tyack illuminates for all readers the change from village to urban ways of thinking and acting over the course of more than one hundred years.

The One Vs. the Many

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One Vs. the Many by Alex Woloch,Professor of English at Stanford University Alex Woloch Book Summary:

Does a novel focus on one life or many? Alex Woloch uses this simple question to develop a powerful new theory of the realist novel, based on how narratives distribute limited attention among a crowded field of characters. His argument has important implications for both literary studies and narrative theory. Characterization has long been a troubled and neglected problem within literary theory. Through close readings of such novels as Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, and Le Père Goriot, Woloch demonstrates that the representation of any character takes place within a shifting field of narrative attention and obscurity. Each individual--whether the central figure or a radically subordinated one--emerges as a character only through his or her distinct and contingent space within the narrative as a whole. The "character-space," as Woloch defines it, marks the dramatic interaction between an implied person and his or her delimited position within a narrative structure. The organization of, and clashes between, many character-spaces within a single narrative totality is essential to the novel's very achievement and concerns, striking at issues central to narrative poetics, the aesthetics of realism, and the dynamics of literary representation. Woloch's discussion of character-space allows for a different history of the novel and a new definition of characterization itself. By making the implied person indispensable to our understanding of literary form, this book offers a forward-looking avenue for contemporary narrative theory.

To the One Person I Consider to Be My Soul Mate

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

To the One Person I Consider to Be My Soul Mate by Douglas Pagels Book Summary:

This is a very special collection of writings. It's one part book, one part love letter, and one part celebration. It's for people who are deeply, joyously in love -- and who would love to have a way to express those deep and lasting feelings. Once in a great while, and usually when it's least expected, a special miracle manages to find its way into two lucky people's lives. In a meant-to-be moment -- somewhere between the opening words, the shared smiles, and the growing amazement that this closeness is beautifully real -- comes the recognition that this is "it" -- this is the one person you've waited for, the one you've dreamed of, the truly wonderful love of your life. This book is a celebration of that kind of relationship. It is a gift that captures in words the things that are often so hard to say... and it expresses, in a very beautiful way, the happiest feelings, hopes, and dreams two people can share.

The One

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One by Ronny Russell Book Summary:

The parable in Luke 15:1-7 can be seen from three angles. The dilemma of the shepherd is whether or not to leave the ninety-nine and go in search of the one lost sheep. It may not make sense economically and rationally, but he leaves them anyway and begins his search. The poor sheep has wandered away and is lost-not hopelessly so, but lost. The sheep does have hope, and it rests with the shepherd whose love for her is so vast and so relentless that he won't rest until he finds the sheep. And then there's the ninety-nine. Their attitude and behavior toward the lost sheep is paramount in the story. Will they join in the search? Will they celebrate with the shepherd once the sheep is returned? Or will they criticize and whine about how the shepherd spends all his time searching for the one who is lost? The One explores the foundational nature of this parable and how important its implications are for the church and one's own walk with the Lord. The value that God places on the one is life-changing for those who come to understand it. "An intense and powerful vision shared through the lens of author Ronny Russell's personal and professional spiritual journey. Authenticity is found in every paragraph that rings with empowering truth, inspiration, and encouragement for the one. ... I have watched Ronny's journey for decades and found his passion to be deep, contagious, and transformational for the one and the remnant who seek meaning in our fast-paced world filled with churches that often miss the one to preserve the institution. Ronny serves Christ above all and finds hope in God's calling and gifting as a member of the body of Christ. Truly a worthy and engaging read!" -Edward Hammett, author of Spiritual Leadership in a Secular Age and Recovering Hope for Your Church

The One God

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One God by Michael L. Chiavone Book Summary:

In what sense is God one? How can those who worship Jesus Christ, his Father, and the Holy Spirit claim to be monotheists? These questions were answered by the early church, and their answering analogies, models, and language have come down to the church today. However, theology is not stagnant, and the twentieth century has seen several new models of the Trinity emerge. Many of these models have focused on the three persons without adequately considering the consequences for the unity of God. The One God seeks to develop an understanding of the unity of the Triune God by examining the positions put forward by Karl Rahner, Millard Erickson, John Zizioulas, and Wolfhart Pannenberg. After carefully presenting and critically examining each of these positions, this book offers a synthesis: an understanding of the unity of God that is historically informed, theologically adequate, internally coherent, and able to explain Christian monotheism in a new century. By affirming both the singular divine essence of God and the genuine, eternal interdependence of distinct divine persons in God, The One God affirms the personal and the natural levels of ontology, both crucial for understanding God, humanity, and the world.

The One-state Solution

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One-state Solution by Virginia Tilley Book Summary:

The one-state solution demonstrates that Israeli settlements have already encroached on the occupied territory of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to the extent that any Palestinian state in those areas is unviable. It reveals the irreversible impact of Israel's settlement grid by summarising its physical, demographic, financial and political dimensions. Virginia Q.Tilley explains why we should assume that this grid will not be withdrawn - or its expansion reversed - by reviewing the role of the key political actors: the Israeli government, the United States, the Arab states, and the European Union. Finally the book addresses the daunting obstacles to a one-state solution - including major revision of the Zionist dream but also Palestinian and other regional resistance - and offers some ideas about how these obstacles might be addressed.

The One New Man

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One New Man by Witness Lee Book Summary:

In the book of Ephesians, the church is revealed as the assembly, the household, the Body of Christ, and the new man. The church as the Body of Christ needs Christ as its life, whereas the Church as the new man, the highest aspect of the church, needs Christ as its person. According to Colossians 3:10-11, Christ is all and in all in the new man; thus, in the new man, there is no room for natural persons, culture, status, or ethics. In the new man there is only one person—Christ.

The One Purpose of God

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One Purpose of God by J. Bonda Book Summary:

Throughout the centuries the church has taught that the vast majority of humankind will suffer eternal punishment. But is this teaching truly biblical? In this book Jan Bonds scrutinizes church tradition and Scripture - especially Paul's letter to the Romans - and concludes that neither Paul nor the prophets to whom he appeals show any trace of supporting the doctrine of eternal damnation. On the contrary, they tell us that God wants to save all people and that he will not rest until that goal has been achieved.

Religion and The One

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Religion and The One by Frederick Copleston Book Summary:

Theories of one ultimate reality exist in philosophies of both the East and the West, and in both traditions such theories are commonly connected with religion. In Religion and the One, Frederick Copleston explores the approach that different philosophies have taken to the question of divine reality, with a special focus on the metaphysics of the One.In the first part of the book, Copleston looks at the features of different traditions, discussing Taoist philosophy, the Vedanta schools of thought in India, the development of philosophy in the Islamic world, and a number of movements from the Western tradition. The second part questions why people form such theories, exploring factors such as the nature of the self and the cognitive value of mysticism.Writing with all his hallmark learning and lucidity, the author also discusses the consequences of the metaphysics of the One for ethical ideals and social activism. Approaching the issues in an open-minded and unprejudiced fashion, he does not pretend to have answers to all the questions he raises. However, unlike many theologians and philosophers, he is not prepared to dismiss metaphysics as being inherently irreligious.

Practical Theology and the One Body of Christ

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Practical Theology and the One Body of Christ by Thomas John Hastings Book Summary:

Amid the ongoing acceleration of cultural interaction that accompanies globalization, it is more important than ever that practical theology be freed from cultural bias and united in a common christological understanding. In Practical Theology and the One Body of Christ Thomas John Hastings draws on decades of his own cross-cultural teaching and on current transformational models to develop a "missional-ecumenical model" of practical theology. By studying in detail the life and ministry of first-generation Japanese Protestant pastor Tamura Naomi, Hastings generates a real-life example of the practicality of his original model and offers a more global, alternative perspective on the religious education movement than what is common in Western societies.

Carry the One

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Carry the One by Carol Anshaw Book Summary:

Carry the One begins in the hours following Carmen’s wedding reception, when a car filled with stoned, drunk, and sleepy guests accidentally hits and kills a girl on a dark country road. For the next twenty-five years, those involved, including Carmen and her brother and sister, craft their lives in response to this single tragic moment. As one character says, “When you add us up, you always have to carry the one.” Through friendships and love affairs; marriage and divorce; parenthood, holidays, and the modest calamities and triumphs of ordinary days, Carry the One shows how one life affects another and how those who thrive and those who self-destruct are closer to each other than we’d expect. As they seek redemption through addiction, social justice, and art, Anshaw’s characters reflect our deepest pain and longings, our joys, and our transcendent moments of understanding. This wise, wry, and erotically charged novel derives its power and appeal from the author’s exquisite use of language; her sympathy for her recognizable, very flawed characters; and her persuasive belief in the transforming forces of time and love.

The One Mind

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One Mind by Matthew A. Fike Book Summary:

The One Mind: C. G. Jung and the Future of Literary Criticism explores the implications of C. G. Jung's unus mundus by applying his writings on the metaphysical, the paranormal, and the quantum to literature. As Jung knew, everything is connected because of its participation in universal consciousness, which encompasses all that is, including the collective unconscious. Matthew A. Fike argues that this principle of unity enables an approach in which psychic functioning is both a subject and a means of discovery—psi phenomena evoke the connections among the physical world, the psyche, and the spiritual realm. Applying the tools of Jungian literary criticism in new ways by expanding their scope and methodology, Fike discusses the works of Hawthorne, Milton, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and lesser-known writers in terms of issues from psychology, parapsychology, and physics. Topics include the case for monism over materialism, altered states of consciousness, types of psychic functioning, UFOs, synchronicity, and space-time relativity. The One Mind examines Goodman Brown's dream, Adam's vision in Paradise Lost, the dream sequence in "The Wanderer," the role of metaphor in Robert A. Monroe's metaphysical trilogy, Orfeo Angelucci's work on UFOs, and the stolen boat episode in Wordsworth's The Prelude. The book concludes with case studies on Robert Jordan and William Blake. Considered together, these readings bring us a significant step closer to a unity of psychology, science, and spirituality. The One Mind illustrates how Jung's writings contain the seeds of the future of literary criticism. Reaching beyond archetypal criticism and postmodern theoretical approaches to Jung, Fike proposes a new school of Jungian literary criticism based on the unitary world that underpins the collective unconscious. This book will appeal to scholars of C. G. Jung as well as students and readers with an interest in psychoanalysis, literature, literary theory, and the history of ideas.

The One Thing You Need to Know by Marcus Buckingham Book Summary:

Drawing on a wide body of research, including extensive in-depth interviews, THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO KNOW reveals the central insights that lie at the core of: Great Managing, Great Leadership and Great Careers. Buckingham uses a wealth of relevant examples to reveal that at the heart of each insight lies a controlling insight. Lose sight of this 'one thing' and all of your best efforts at managing, leading, or individual achievement will be diminished. For great managing, the controlling insight has less to do with fairness, or team building, or clear expectations (although all are important). Rather, the one thing great managers know is the need to discover and then capitalize on what is unique about each person. For leadership, the controlling insight is the opposite - discover and capitalize on what is universal to all your people, regardless of differences in personality, race, sex, or age. For sustained individual success, the controlling insight is the need to discover what you don't like doing, and know how and when to stop doing it. In every way a groundbreaking work, THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO KNOW offers crucial performance and career lessons for business people at every level.

The One Love by Joseph Miller (Rear Admiral),Rear Admiral Joseph H. Miller,Cathy Parker Miller R. N. Book Summary:

The One Love refers to a husband and wife who have become one and their One love which is to the other. This book is based on the thoughts from Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived. He had 700 wives and 12,000 horses, but he had only one love. An alternate interpretation of the Biblical book, Song of Solomon, (a story of sexual love) suggests that Solomon's experience answers the question, "Is it better to have loved and lost or better to have never loved at all? Solomon had wondered away from God. He was led by his wives to worship pagan gods. When he lost his only true love, the impact caused him to return to the only true God in his old age. This book is a reference book for all young people who are contemplating marriage or are already married. It lists the 13 subjects that are necessary to have a "Broad Mentality" in life. It lists the 11 factors for a "Broad Mentality" needed for a successful marriage. It asks 25 questions to be reviewed before marriage that lead to thoughts for a life-long or permanent marriage. It is very practical in producing a technique that guarantees communication for young married people. It lists many "Code Names for Love," with instructions as to how young couples can develop their own. It clearly reveals that sex outside of marriage is a sin. It takes one on a tour through the Bible showing that homosexuality is a sin and one who is persistent in that sin (as with many other sins) will not be in the Kingdom of Heaven. The course involves a study of Five Chapters concerning True Love. An Addendum, (with 86 questions) that outlines the course discuses: Falling in Love, (25 Questions before Marriage), Marriage, and Staying Married.

The One Best Way?

The One Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The One Best Way? by Tasnim Nathoo,Aleck Ostry Book Summary:

In recent years, breastfeeding has been prominently in the public eye in relation to debates on issues ranging from parental leave policies, work−family balance, public decency, the safety of our food supply, and public health concerns such as health care costs and the obesity “epidemic.” Breastfeeding has officially been considered “the one best way” for feeding infants for the past 150 years of Canadian history. This book examines the history and evolution of breastfeeding policies and practices in Canada from the end of the nineteenth century to the turn of the twenty-first. The authors’ historical approach allows current debates to be situated within a broader social, political, cultural, and economic context. Breastfeeding shifted from a private matter to a public concern at the end of the nineteenth century. Over the course of the next century, the “best” way to feed infants was often scientifically or politically determined, and guidelines for mothers shifted from one generation to the next. Drawing upon government reports, academic journals, archival sources, and interviews with policy-makers and breastfeeding advocates, the authors trace trends, patterns, ideologies, and policies of breastfeeding in Canada.
