The Big Red Squirrel and the Little Rhinoceros by , Book Summary:

'A forgotten treasure!' - The Bookseller highlights A retro book with a real sixties feel, fondly remembered by many of today's parents. Beautifully illustrated by the great Ralph Steadman. An important message about being yourself, magically told. A beautifully imaginitive gem from the 60's, brought bang up-to-date while maintaining a wonderful retro feel. Life in the forest is difficult for the small animals. The Squirrel, Mouse and Frog always have to be on the look-out for the big creatures, such as the Lion, Rhinoceros and Crocodile. But one day things magically change... the little animals grow bigger and the large animals shrink. But is live really any easier for the Squirrel now that he is King of the forest? THE ILLUSTRATOR Ralph Steadman is a cartoonist and caricaturist famous for his illustrations for Punch, Private Eye, the Daily Telegraph, the New York Times and Rolling Stone and for his work with gonzo writer Hunter S Thompson. Titles include: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Joke's Over and editions of the classics Animal Farm and Alice in Wonderland.

The Ghosts Of Evolution by Connie Barlow Book Summary:

A new vision is sweeping through ecological science: The dense web of dependencies that makes up an ecosystem has gained an added dimension-the dimension of time. Every field, forest, and park is full of living organisms adapted for relationships with creatures that are now extinct. In a vivid narrative, Connie Barlow shows how the idea of "missing partners" in nature evolved from isolated, curious examples into an idea that is transforming how ecologists understand the entire flora and fauna of the Americas. This fascinating book will enrich the experience of any amateur naturalist, as well as teach us that the ripples of biodiversity loss around us are just the leading edge of what may well become perilous cascades of extinction.

The Ecology of Tropical East Asia by Richard T. Corlett Book Summary:

Tropical East Asia is home to over one billion people and faces massive human impacts from its rising population and rapid economic growth. It has already lost more than half of its forest cover to agriculture and urbanization, and has the highest rates of deforestation and logging in the tropics. Habitat loss, coupled with hunting and the relentless trade in wildlife products, threatens all its large and many of its smaller vertebrates. Despite these problems, the region still supports an estimated 15-25% of global terrestrial biodiversity and a growing environmental awareness means that it is no longer assumed that economic development justifies environmental damage, and no longer accepted that this trade-off is inevitable. Effective conservation action now depends on integrating a clear understanding of the ecological patterns and processes in the region with the varied needs of its human population. This third edition continues to provide an overview of the terrestrial ecology of Tropical East Asia: from southern China to Indonesia, and from Bhutan and Bangladesh to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It retains the balance between compactness and comprehensiveness of the previous editions, and the even-handed geographical treatment of the whole region, but it updates both the contents and the perspective. Approximately one third of the text is new or greatly modified, reflecting the explosion of new research in the region in the last few years and the increasing use of new tools, particularly from genomics and remote sensing. The change in perspective largely reflects the growing realization that we are in a new epoch, the Anthropocene, in which human activities have at least as large an influence as natural processes, and that stopping or reversing ecological change is no longer an option. This does not mean that biodiversity conservation is no longer possible or worthwhile, but that the biodiverse future we strive for will inevitably be very different from the past. The Ecology of Tropical East Asia is an advanced textbook suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students taking courses on the terrestrial ecology of the East Asian tropics, as well as an authoritative regional reference for professional ecologists, conservationists, and interested amateurs worldwide.

Advancements in science and engineering have occurred at a surprisingly rapid pace since the release of the seventh edition of this encyclopedia. Large portions of the reference have required comprehensive rewriting and new illustrations. Scores of new topics have been included to create this thoroughly updated eighth edition. The appearance of this new edition in 1994 marks the continuation of a tradition commenced well over a half-century ago in 1938 Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia, First Edition, was published and welcomed by educators worldwide at a time when what we know today as modern science was just getting underway. The early encyclopedia was well received by students and educators alike during a critical time span when science became established as a major factor in shaping the progress and economy of individual nations and at the global level. A vital need existed for a permanent science reference that could be updated periodically and made conveniently available to audiences that numbered in the millions. The pioneering VNSE met these criteria and continues today as a reliable technical information source for making private and public decisions that present a backdrop of technical alternatives.

Does It Fart? by Nick Caruso,Dani Rabaiotti Book Summary:

From the scientist duo behind True or Poo?, their original New York Times bestselling sensation--a scientifically precise, fully illustrated, utterly hilarious guide to animal flatulence. Dogs do it. Millipedes do it. Dinosaurs did it. You do it. I do it. Octopuses don't (and nor do octopi). Spiders might do it: more research is needed. Birds don't do it, but they could if they wanted to. Herrings do it to communicate with each other. In 2017 zoologist Dani Rabaiotti's teenage brother asked her a most teenaged question: Do snakes fart? Stumped, Rabaiotti turned to Twitter. The internet did not disappoint. Her innocent question spawned the hashtag #doesitfart and it spread like a noxious gas. Dozens of noted experts began weighing in on which animals do and don't fart, and if they do, how much, how often, what it's made of, what it smells like, and why. Clearly, the public demands more information on animal farts. Does it Fart? fills that void: a fully authoritative, fully illustrated guide to animal flatulence, covering the habits of 80 animals in more detail than you ever knew you needed. What do hyena farts smell especially bad? What is a fossa, and does it fart? Why do clams vomit but not fart? And what is a fart, really? Pairing hilarious illustrations with surprisingly detailed scientific explanations, Does it Fart? will allow you to shift the blame onto all kinds of unlikely animals for years to come.

When Brother John, a man known for wandering around Africa for years, tells Allan Quatermain about a rare and gorgeous orchid hidden in the wild flora of Africa, Quatermain is determined to find one. When he does, he travels to England and meets Stephen Somers, who collects special flowers. Somers was eager to buy the orchid, but after a mix up at an auction, he finds himself in trouble with his family. Nevertheless, Somers still desperately wants one of the African orchids, and offers to accompany Quatermain and finance the journey to recover another flower. Never one to turn down an expedition, Quatermain agrees, and together, they begin their expedition in Africa, determined to find the orchid that Brother John had described as the largest flower in the region. However, as their adventure unfolds, the men face unanticipated struggles. While they continue their search, the men must work together and think quick to survive the unexpected, trekking through land unknown, fighting battles, leading rescue missions, and navigating daunting encounters with cannibals, slave traders, and a giant gorilla.
