The Mad King by Edgar Rice Burroughs Book Summary:

"I have passed through a series of rather remarkable adventures since I came to Lutha," said Barney apparently quite irrelevantly, after the two had remained silent for a moment. "Shortly after my car fell upon you I was mistaken for the fugitive King Leopold by the young lady whose horse fell into the ravine with my car. She is a most loyal supporter of the king, being none other than the Princess Emma von der Tann. From her I learned to espouse the cause of Leopold." ~~~ Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public's imagination. The Mad King, first published in book form in 1926 and difficult to find in print, is the rollicking yarn of American Barney Custer, who is mistaken for a deranged sovereign in the faraway land of Lutha. Perhaps Burroughs's most outrageously grandiloquent work, this tale of daring swordfights, damsels in distress, and diabolical villains is a favorite among true Burroughs devotees. American novelist EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS (1875-1950) wrote dozens of adventure, crime, and science-fiction novels that are still beloved today, including Tarzan of the Apes (1912), At the Earth's Core (1914), A Princess of Mars (1917), and Pirates of Venus (1934). He is reputed to have been reading a comic book when he died.

At the Earth's Core by Edgar Rice Burroughs Book Summary:

While using a large mining device, two men, David Innes and Abner Perry, are transported into a lush prehistoric land hidden beneath the Earth’s crust. They are both captured and forced to participate in its brutal practices. David Innes and Abner Perry use a large mechanical prospector to mine the Earth’s surface. When the machine malfunctions, they lose control and are transported deep into the planet’s core. Instead of boiling lava, they’re met with a tropical paradise occupied by foreign creatures and stone-age men and women. The humans are enslaved by a reptilian species, forcing David and Abnery into bondage. Despite their circumstance, they join forces to create a plan to abolish the hierarchy once and for all. At the Earth’s Core combines the most popular elements of science fiction and fantasy. Mystical creatures and time travel are a large part of this colorful tale. It’s another example of the strong visual style Edgar Rice Burroughs is known for. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of At the Earth’s Core is both modern and readable.

Why Hell Stinks of Sulfur by Salomon Kroonenberg Book Summary:

When people go looking for hell, they go underground. Dante, Aeneas, and Odysseus all journeyed beneath the earth to find the underworld, a place where the dead are tortured according to their sins. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to deal with a huge underground pit infested with demons below her high school called the Hellmouth. And when Homer Simpson ate the forbidden donut for which he’d sold his soul to the devil, he was sucked through a fiery hole in the ground. Though humans actually haven’t gone more than 7.5 miles into the earth, we associate this mysterious underground realm with darkness and death, and the depths of the earth’s interior remain an inspiration for writers and artists trying to imagine hell. Why Hell Stinks of Sulfur uses subterranean mythology as a point of departure to explore the vast world that lies beneath our feet. Geologist Salomon Kroonenberg takes us on an expedition that begins in Dante’s Inferno and continues through Virgil, Da Vinci, Descartes, and Jules Verne. He investigates the nine circles of hell, searches a lake near Naples for the gates of hell used by Aeneas, and turns a scientific spotlight on the many myths of the underworld. He uncovers the layers of the earth’s interior one by one, describing the variety of gasses, ores, liquids, and metals that add to the immense variety of color that can be found below us. Kroonenberg views the inside of the earth as a living ecosystem whose riches we are only beginning to discover, and he warns against our thirst for natural resources exhausting the earth. From the underground rivers and lakes that have never seen the light of day to the story of Saint Barbara—the patron saint of mineworkers—Kroonenberg’s pursuit of the geological foundations of hell is a fascinating journey to the center of the earth.

Beasts of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs Book Summary:

The Beasts of Tarzan is the third adventure of the jungle lord and displays the author’s mythic hero at his most loyal, as he struggles through terrible trials to reunite his family, and his most savage, as he confronts the men who dared tear his family apart. Edgar Rice Burroughs returns to the chronicles of one of the world’s most celebrated fictional characters, Tarzan of the Apes. Old enemies resurface to torment Tarzan while he’s in England, living as the civilized Lord Greystoke. The kidnapping of his infant son leads to the capture of both parents, and to Tarzan being stranded, unarmed and naked, on the shore of a jungle island. Maddened by a note left by the kidnappers, hinting at a terrible fate for mother and child, and pitted against a savage collection of jungle beasts, Lord Greystoke reverts to his primal self, a savage animal of superhuman ferocity, and the worst opponent a villain could have. Befriending a savage panther and leading a small army of great apes, Tarzan will fight to restore his family and make his enemies pay a heavy price. The author’s vivid imagination and clear prose grants his incredible tale a beguiling verisimilitude, putting the reader into the wild action with the persuasive power of a 20th century myth. Tarzan remains an unforgettable character and a pop culture phenomenon. Originally published in book form in 1914, The Beasts of Tarzan is part of a rich legacy that includes a series of 24 books and adaptations in film, radio, television, comics and more. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Beasts of Tarzan is both modern and readable.

Jungle Tales of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs Book Summary:

It was true that Tarzan and Tantor were the best of friends, and that Tarzan never yet had tasted of the flesh of the elephant; but the Gomangani evidently had slain one, and as they were eating of the flesh of their kill, Tarzan was assailed by no doubts as to the ethics of his doing likewise, should he have the opportunity. Had he known that the elephant had died of sickness several days before the blacks discovered the carcass, he might not have been so keen to partake of the feast, for Tarzan of the Apes was no carrion-eater. Hunger, however, may blunt the most epicurean taste, and Tarzan was not exactly an epicure. ~~~ Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public's imagination. Jungle Tales of Tarzan, first published in 1919, is the sixth book of Burroughs' tales of the ape-man. This collection of short stories explores the life of the young Tarzan, his adventurous boyhood and teen years among the great apes and other wild creatures that were his only family. American novelist EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS (1875-1950) wrote dozens of adventure, crime, and science fiction novels that are still beloved today, including Tarzan of the Apes (1912), At the Earth's Core (1914), A Princess of Mars (1917), The Land That Time Forgot (1924), and Pirates of Venus (1934). He is reputed to have been reading a comic book when he died.

Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs Book Summary:

Deep in the savage African jungle, the baby Tarzan was raised by a fierce she-ape of the tribe of Kerchak. There he had to learn the secrets of the wild to survive - how to talk with animals, swing through the trees, and fight against the great predators. He grew to the strength and courage of his fellow apes. And in time, his human intelligence promised him the kingship of the tribe. He became truly Lord of the Jungle. Then men entered his jungle, bringing with them the wanton savagery of civilised greed and lust - and bringing also the first white woman Tarzan had ever seen. Now suddenly, Tarzan had to choose between two worlds. (First published 1912)

The Return of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs Book Summary:

Tarzan had renounced his right to the woman he loved, and civilisation held no pleasure for him. After a brief and harrowing period among men, he turned back to the African jungle where he had grown to manhood. It was there he first heard of Opar, the city of gold, left over from fabled Atlantis. It was a city of hideous men - and of beautiful, savage women, over whom reigned La, high priestess of the Flaming God. Its altars were stained with the blood of many sacrifices. Unheeding of the dangers, Tarzan led a band of savage warriors toward the ancient crypts and the more ancient evil of Opar.
