The Rector of Veilbye

Roald Dahl Amp 146's The Twits Nhb Modern Plays [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Rector of Veilbye by Steen Blicher Book Summary:

The classic Danish thriller dubbed 'The First Crime Novel.' The trial of Pastor Søren Jensen Quist of Vejlby took place at Aarhus in 1626. The trial centered around the unexplained disappearance in 1607 of a farm laborer named Jesper Hovgaard who was employed at Pastor Quist's rectory. Fifteen years later, in 1622, human remains were unearthed on the grounds of the rectory. The bones were believed to belong to Hovgaard and word soon spread that the Reverend Quist had slaughtered him and tried to conceal the crime. During the police investigation, two local men, who had past animosity toward Quist, testified that they witnessed the cleric murder Hovgaard while in a drunken rage. The Reverend protested his innocence but was found guilty and executed by decapitation on July 20, 1626. In 2006, 'The Rector of Veilbye' was selected for inclusion in the Cultural Canon of Denmark by the Danish Ministry of Culture. During the ceremony, an official declared that, "the style illuminates elegiac pain and discomfort in an eerily intense drama, and the story is difficult to shake off." Renowned Scandinavian critic Søren Baggesen stated "Blicher is not just the first of Danish literature's great storytellers, he is one of the few tragic poets, Danish literature has ever had."

Art Can Help

Roald Dahl Amp 146's The Twits Nhb Modern Plays [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Art Can Help by Robert Adams Book Summary:

A collection of inspiring essays by the photographer Robert Adams, who advocates the meaningfulness of art in a disillusioned society In Art Can Help, the internationally acclaimed American photographer Robert Adams offers over two dozen meditations on the purpose of art and the responsibility of the artist. In particular, Adams advocates art that evokes beauty without irony or sentimentality, art that "encourages us to gratitude and engagement, and is of both personal and civic consequence." Following an introduction, the book begins with two short essays on the works of the American painter Edward Hopper, an artist venerated by Adams. The rest of this compilation contains texts--more than half of which have never before been published--that contemplate one or two works by an individual artist. The pictures discussed are by noted photographers such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Emmet Gowin, Dorothea Lange, Abelardo Morell, Edward Ranney, Judith Joy Ross, John Szarkowski, and Garry Winogrand. Several essays summon the words of literary figures, including Virginia Woolf and Czeslaw Milosz. Adams's voice is at once intimate and accessible, and is imbued with the accumulated wisdom of a long career devoted to making and viewing art. This eloquent and moving book champions art that fights against disillusionment and despair.

All We Saw by Anne Michaels Book Summary:

A mesmerising, luminously beautiful new poetry collection from Anne Michaels, internationally acclaimed poet and bestselling author of Fugitive Pieces In this passionate, profound collection, Anne Michaels explores one of her essential concerns: 'what love makes us capable of, and incapable of'. Here is the paradox at the heart of loss, the ways in which passion must accept, must insist, that 'death ... give/not only take from us'. A sea in darkness, a woman's hair shining in light, rain falling... how quiet must a voice be in order to be heard? In this way, desire is evoked with intensity and precision. By the end, we are left with a renewed awareness of the mystery at the core of existence; we enter a space that is 'not inside, not outside: / dusk's doorway,' where love remains alive.

Archeophonics

Roald Dahl Amp 146's The Twits Nhb Modern Plays [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Archeophonics by Peter Gizzi Book Summary:

Archeophonics is the first collection of new work from the poet Peter Gizzi in five years. Archeophonics, defined as the archeology of lost sound, is one way of understanding the role and the task of poetry: to recover the buried sounds and shapes of languages in the tradition of the art, and the multitude of private connections that lie undisclosed in one’s emotional memory. The book takes seriously the opening epigraph by the late great James Schuyler: “poetry, like music, is not just song.” It recognizes that the poem is not a decorative art object but a means of organizing the world, in the words of anthropologist Clifford Geertz, “into transient examples of shaped behavior.” Archeophonics is a series of discrete poems that are linked by repeated phrases and words, and its themes and nothing less than joy, outrage, loss, transhistorical thought, and day-to-day life. It is a private book of public and civic concerns.
