Portraiture and British Gothic Fiction by Kamilla Elliott Book Summary:
Traditionally, kings and rulers were featured on stamps and money, the titled and affluent commissioned busts and portraits, and criminals and missing persons appeared on wanted posters. British writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, however, reworked ideas about portraiture to promote the value and agendas of the ordinary middle classes. According to Kamilla Elliott, our current practices of "picture identification" (driver's licenses, passports, and so on) are rooted in these late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century debates. Portraiture and British Gothic Fiction examines ways writers such as Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelley, and C. R. Maturin as well as artists, historians, politicians, and periodical authors dealt with changes in how social identities were understood and valued in British culture—specifically, who was represented by portraits and how they were represented as they vied for social power. Elliott investigates multiple aspects of picture identification: its politics, epistemologies, semiotics, and aesthetics, and the desires and phobias that it produces. Her extensive research not only covers Gothic literature's best-known and most studied texts but also engages with more than 100 Gothic works in total, expanding knowledge of first-wave Gothic fiction as well as opening new windows into familiar work. -- Jerrold E. The Portrait and the Colonial Imaginary by Simon Dell Book Summary:
French colonisers of the Third Republic claimed not to oppress but to liberate, imagining they were spreading republican ideals to the colonies to make a Greater France. In this book Simon Dell explores the various roles played by portraiture in this colonial imaginary. Anyone interested in the history of colonial Africa will have encountered innumerable portraits of African elites produced during the first half of the twentieth century, yet no book to date has focused on these ubiquitous images. Dell analyses the production and dissemination of such portraits and situates them in a complex and conflicted field of representations. Moving between European and African perspectives, The Portrait and the Colonial Imaginary blends history with art history to provide insights into the larger processes that were transforming the French metropole and colonies during the early twentieth century. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).

Reasons and Persons by Derek Parfit Book Summary:
This book challenges, with several powerful arguments, some of our deepest beliefs about rationality, morality, and personal identity. The author claims that we have a false view of our own nature; that it is often rational to act against our own best interests; that most of us have moral views that are directly self-defeating; and that, when we consider future generations the conclusions will often be disturbing. He concludes that moral non-religious moral philosophy is a young subject, with a promising but unpredictable future.

In the Face of It by John McGreal Book Summary:
In the Face of It is part of a series of three Artists’ Books that represent three stages of an artistic journey in the years 1995-2006 exploring the dialectic of mark, word and image. A recurrent theme in each is that of surprise. In The Face of It recounts an unexpected shift in 1995 from the earlier visual poetry in The Poetry of It(2013), into pictorial art itself. In works like Another Rilke, a series of figurative prints termed 'Art Noir' begun in pursuit of self-knowledge became a vehicle for the maker’s self-identification as an artist and conception of such works as portraiture. The three books show how working through these stages in visual art was a condition for the spacial writing and reading of both sound and silence in my it to you (2013), The Book of It (2010) as well as In The Face of It (2013).
La République by Platon Book Summary:
« Mais, continuai-je, qu’entends-tu par amis ? Ceux qui nous paraissent gens de bien, ou ceux qui le sont, quand même ils ne nous paraîtraient pas tels ? Je te demande la même chose des ennemis. Il me paraît naturel d’aimer ceux qu’on croit gens de bien et de haïr ceux qu’on croit méchants. » Platon
Beauty Unlimited by Gregory Velazco Trianosky,Noël Carroll Book Summary:
“A feminist aesthetics text which bridges aesthetic theory, art and popular culture and acknowledges the evolving character of standards of beauty” (Teaching Philosophy). Emphasizing the human body in all of its forms, Beauty Unlimited expands the boundaries of what is meant by beauty, both geographically and aesthetically. Peg Zeglin Brand and an international group of contributors interrogate the body and the meaning of physical beauty in this multidisciplinary volume. This striking and provocative book explores the history of bodily beautification; the physicality of socially or culturally determined choices of beautification; the interplay of gender, race, class, age, sexuality, and ethnicity within and on the body; and the aesthetic meaning of the concept of beauty in an increasingly globalized world.

Augusta Webster: Portraits and Other Poems by Augusta Webster Book Summary:
Augusta Webster was very widely praised in her own time—Christina Rossetti thought her “by far the most formidable” woman poet. Her work has again come into favour, so much so that Isobel Armstrong and her co-editors of the influential anthology, Nineteenth-Century Women Poets, declare that “there can be no doubt that Augusta Webster ranks as one of the great Victorian poets.” This collection is the first edition of Webster’s poems since 1895. It is a selection of her best work, emphasizing her powerful dramatic monologues and including a substantial number of her lyrics. With an introduction and background documents that highlight the distinctiveness of her work, this edition will help to re-establish Augusta Webster as a major figure of nineteenth-century English literature.
