How Change Happens

Parabolic Trough 55 Success Secrets 55 Most Asked Questions On Parabolic Trough What You Need To Know [Pdf/ePub] eBook

How Change Happens by Duncan Green Book Summary:

Human society is full of would-be "change agents," a restless mix of campaigners, lobbyists, and officials, both individuals and organizations, set on transforming the world. They want to improve public services, reform laws and regulations, guarantee human rights, get a fairer deal for those on the sharp end, achieve greater recognition for any number of issues, or simply be treated with respect. Striking then, why so many universities lack programs for social activists, to which students can turn for advice and inspiration. Instead, scholarly discussions of change are fragmented with few conversations crossing disciplinary boundaries, rarely making it onto the radar of those actively seeking change. This book bridges the gap between academia and practice, bringing together the best research from a range of academic disciplines and the evolving practical understanding of activists to explore the topic of social and political change. Drawing on many first-hand examples from the global experience of Oxfam, one of the world's largest social justice NGOs, as well as the author's insights from studying and working on international development, it tests ideas on how change happens and offers the latest thinking on what works to achieve progressive change.

Diversified Development

Parabolic Trough 55 Success Secrets 55 Most Asked Questions On Parabolic Trough What You Need To Know [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Diversified Development by Indermit S. Gill,Ivailo Izvorski,Willem van Eeghen,Donato De Rosa Book Summary:

This report is about the twelve countries of the former Soviet Union (Eurasia). About 85 percent of the region's economic output is in six resource-rich economies. Today, 85 percent of Eurasia's 280 million people are no longer poor. But academics who study resource-based economies debate whether these countries are cursed or blessed. And Eurasia's policymakers long for the day when their economies are less extractive and more innovative. These observations prompt questions: Are resources a blessing or a curse? If it is one of these things, what would make it into the other? How much should Eurasia try to diversify their exports and economies away from natural resources? Are there ways to make Eurasian economies both extractive and innovative? The answers: a large majority of Eurasia's people should consider themselves blessed. To make sure that this blessing does not become a curse, Eurasian economies have to become efficient—more productive, job-creating, and stable. But efficiency is not the same as diversification: there is little evidence that more concentrated economies have slower productivity growth, fewer jobs, or much more economic volatility. Governments need to worry less about the composition of exports and production and more about asset portfolios—natural resources, built capital, and economic institutions. They have much to do. Eurasia's portfolios are heavy in tangibles like oil and gas and roads and railways and light in intangibles such as the institutions for managing resource earnings, providing social services, and regulating enterprise. But tangibles are not what distinguish success from failure—investments in intangibles, early in their development, have made some resource-rich countries both extractive and innovative.

Visualizing Research

Visualizing Research by Carole Gray,Julian Malins Book Summary:

Visualizing Research guides postgraduate students in art and design through the development and implementation of a research project, using the metaphor of a 'journey of exploration'. For use with a formal programme of study, from masters to doctoral level, the book derives from the creative relationship between research, practice and teaching in art and design. It extends generic research processes into practice-based approaches more relevant to artists and designers, introducing wherever possible visual, interactive and collaborative methods. The Introduction and Chapter 1 'Planning the Journey' define the concept and value of 'practice-based' formal research, tracking the debate around its development and explaining key concepts and terminology. ’Mapping the Terrain’ then describes methods of contextualizing research in art and design (the contextual review, using reference material); ’Locating Your Position’ and ’Crossing the Terrain’ guide the reader through the stages of identifying an appropriate research question and methodological approach, writing the proposal and managing research information. Methods of evaluation and analysis are explored, and of strategies for reporting and communicating research findings are suggested. Appendices and a glossary are also included. Visualizing Research draws on the experience of researchers in different contexts and includes case studies of real projects. Although written primarily for postgraduate students, research supervisors, managers and academic staff in art and design and related areas, such as architecture and media studies, will find this a valuable research reference. An accompanying website www.visualizingresearch.info includes multimedia and other resources that complement the book.

Indeed, equally relevant towards this current transformation – and key topics in this volume – are ICTs, public spaces and society; next economy for the city; strategies and actions for good governance; urban-rural innovation; rethinking mobility. The book’s depth in understanding and insightfulness in re-thinking demonstrate the breaking of new ground in smart and sustainable planning. Evaluating Climate Change Action for Sustainable Development by Juha I. Uitto,Jyotsna Puri,Rob D. van den Berg Book Summary:

This book is open access under a Creative Commons license. This authoritative book presents the ever progressing state of the art in evaluating climate change strategies and action. It builds upon a selection of relevant and practical papers and presentations given at the 2nd International Conference on Evaluating Climate Change and Development held in Washington DC in 2014 and includes perspectives from independent evaluations of the major international organisations supporting climate action in developing countries, such as the Global Environment Facility. The first section of the book sets the stage and provides an overview of independent evaluations, carried out by multilateral development banks and development organisations. Important topics include how policies and organisations aim to achieve impact and how this is measured, whether climate change is mainstreamed into other development programs, and whether operations are meeting the urgency of climate change challenges. The following sections focus on evaluation of climate change projects and policies as they link to development, from the perspective of international organisations, NGO’s, multilateral and bilateral aid agencies, and academia. The authors share methodologies or approaches used to better understand problems and assess interventions, strategies and policies. They also share challenges encountered, what was done to solve these and lessons learned from evaluations. Collectively, the authors illustrate the importance of evaluation in providing evidence to guide policy change to informed decision-making.

Fruit Trees and Useful Plants in Amazonian Life by Patricia Shanley Book Summary:

This publication is a testament to the potential of integrating traditional and scientific knowledge of both local communities and academic and development professionals alike. It also serves as a reminder to the scientific community that science should be shared with local people and not confined to journals and closed circles of technical experts. Scientists and forest-reliant communities are geographically and conceptually distant. Scientific findings are rarely shared with local people and locals are infrequently consulted regarding the species and landscapes they have known for generations. To bridge this divide, this book weaves together the voices of farmers and scientists; hunters and policy makers; midwives and musicians. From Brazil nuts and Cat's claw to Copaiba and Titica, this book shares a wealth of information on a wide range of plant species that comes only from the close collaboration between local peoples and researchers.

The Male Patient in Aesthetic Medicine by Mauricio de Maio,Berthold Rzany Book Summary:

are g rowing among core specialists in the aesthetic field, aesthetic medicine is advancing exponentially. The two authors of this text have worked together to provide a knowled- able and practical approach to the male patient in aesthetic medicine. April 2009 Timothy Corcoran Flynn, M.D. Clinical Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Medical Director, Cary Skin Center, Cary, NC 27608, USA Preface Men are different from women in many ways. Male aesthetics are different from female aesthetics. Most readers would agree with this statement. However, as the majority of our patients are still female, even cosmetic physicians may tend to treat their male patients like female patients. This can lead to dissatisfaction of the patient and consequently of the cosmetic physician. As the demand for aesthetic procedures in male patients is rising, there is a need for good textbooks on this subject. The aim of this book is to explain the specifities of the ageing process and facial aesthetics in men and to present the treatments available. In addition, common skin conditions and diseases that also influence the male aesthetic appearance will be discussed. The book written from the perspectives of a plastic surgeon and a dermatologist should enable us to treat our male patients better, and by that increase the satisfaction of our patients and, last not least, our satisfaction as the treating physicians.

The package contains the data sets mentioned in the text (data(package="UsingR")), answers to selected problems (answers()), a few demonstrations (demo()), the errata (errata()), and sample code from the text. The topics of this text line up closely with traditional teaching progression; however, the book also highlights computer-intensive approaches to motivate the more traditional approach. Who Owns Our Low Carbon Future? by Bernice Lee,Ilian Iliev,Felix Preston Book Summary:

"Ensuring access to climate-friendly technologies at affordable prices is a critical issue for international public policy - and one that cuts across economic, legal, security and geopolitical concerns. To keep the rise in average global temperatures below 2C, global greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2020 and be reduced to 50-85 per cent below 2000 levels by 2050. Achieving these ambitious targets requires a critical mass of low carbon investment, innovation and deployment that meets mid- and long-term goals. The implications for corporate strategies and business models are profound. This report examines two issues: patent ownership of climate-friendly technologies, and the rate of technology diffusion. A polarized debate continues between proponents of strengthening intellectual property rights (IPR) regimes to encourage innovation of climate technologies on the one hand, and those calling for more IP-related flexibilities to ensure access to key technologies by developing countries on the other."--Publisher.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has become a ubiquitous part of our lives. Hardly a day goes by without hearing or reading about AI and the impacts it is having on society. Up until now, industry has led the charge in developing and implementing AI technologies to help achieve commercial goals. However, the public sector is increasingly turning to AI technologies to carry out its functions, develop and inform policy, and deliver services to its citizens. How governments and regulators respond to technological and social developments in AI will have a large and lasting impact on our society. We need to encourage worthwhile technological innovation, but we need to do so with our eyes open. This requires us to be alert to the far-reaching effects AI can have. We all have a role to play in determining what the society in which we want to live looks like. https://ovic.vic.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/closer-to-the-machine-web.pdf
