Out of Sorts

Out Of Sorts Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Out of Sorts by Sarah Bessey Book Summary:

From the popular blogger and provocative author of Jesus Feminist comes a riveting new study of Christianity that helps you wrestle with—and sort out—your faith. In Out of Sorts, Sarah Bessey—award-winning blogger and author of Jesus Feminist, which was hailed as “lucid, compelling, and beautifully written” (Frank Viola, author of God’s Favorite Place on Earth)—helps us grapple with core Christian issues using a mixture of beautiful storytelling and biblical teaching, a style well described as “narrative theology.” As she candidly shares her wrestlings with core issues—such as who Jesus is, what place the Church has in our lives, how to disagree yet remain within a community, and how to love the Bible for what it is rather than what we want it to be—she teaches us how to walk courageously through our own tough questions. In the process of gently helping us sort things out, Bessey teaches us how to be as comfortable with uncertainty as we are with solid answers. And as we learn to hold questions in one hand and answers in the other, we discover new depths of faith that will remain secure even through the storms of life.

Out of Sorts

Out of Sorts by Joseph A. Dane Book Summary:

The new history of the book has constituted a vibrant academic field in recent years, and theories of print culture have moved to the center of much scholarly discourse. One might think typography would be a basic element in the construction of these theories, yet if only we would pay careful attention to detail, Joseph A. Dane argues, we would find something else entirely: that a careful consideration of typography serves not as a material support to prevailing theories of print but, rather, as a recalcitrant counter-voice to them. In Out of Sorts Dane continues his examination of the ways in which the grand narratives of book history mask what we might actually learn by looking at books themselves. He considers the differences between internal and external evidence for the nature of the type used by Gutenberg and the curious disconnection between the two, and he explores how descriptions of typesetting devices from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have been projected back onto the fifteenth to make the earlier period not more accessible but less. In subsequent chapters, he considers topics that include the modern mythologies of so-called gothic typefaces, the presence of nontypographical elements in typographical form, and the assumptions that underlie the electronic editions of a medieval poem or the visual representation of typographical history in nineteenth-century studies of the subject. Is Dane one of the most original or most traditional of historians of print? In Out of Sorts he demonstrates that it may well be possible to be both things at once.

Port Out, Starboard Home

Out Of Sorts Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Port Out, Starboard Home by Michael Quinion Book Summary:

Can it really be true that 'golf' stands for 'Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden'? Or that 'rule of thumb' comes from an archaic legal principle that a man may chastise his wife, but only with a rod no thicker than his thumb? These and hundreds of other stories are commonly told and retold whenever people meet. They grow up in part because expressions are often genuinely mysterious. Why, for example, are satisfying meals 'square' rather than any other shape? And how did anyone ever come up with the idea that if you're competent at something you can 'cut the mustard'? Michael Quinion here retells many of the more bizarre tales, and explains their real origins where they're known. This is a fascinating treasure-trove of fiction and fact for anyone interested in language.

An Eden of Sorts: The Natural History of My Feral Garden

Out Of Sorts Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

An Eden of Sorts: The Natural History of My Feral Garden by John Hanson Mitchell Book Summary:

Twenty-five years ago John Hanson Mitchell cut down a 1 1/2-acre stand of seventy-five-year-old white pines and planted a garden in their place. An Eden of Sorts is a history of the plants and animals that lived on the tract over the next decades. In a survey he made before taking down the pines, Mitchell counted no more than five or six flowering plants and shrubs. Over the years he created a series of fanciful garden “rooms” in the Italian style. Now, in addition to an intriguing garden of earthly delights, he has recorded more than one thousand species of plants and animals on the property. This is a paradoxical yet hopeful narrative of what can happen to a plot of land when it is properly managed.

Newport a Fairy Tale of Sorts

Out Of Sorts Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Newport a Fairy Tale of Sorts by Timothy N. Thomas Book Summary:

This is a story about Newport Beach California, in all its glory and frailties. This is the real story of the O.C. All fiction is true. I am going to come right out and say it. It all happened sometime, someplace, somewhere. Non-fiction, that's where the quality B.S. comes from nowadays. 'A Million Little Pieces' - Need I say more? But fiction is all true and the worst offenders are these nasty little fairy tales. They're the truest of them all. In fact I think fairy tales where invented so that authors would not have to defend their positions on the issues they write of. 'Hey it's only a fairy tale get over it.' - That kind of brush off. Fairy tale writers are sneaky bastards, they always tell the truth. Theodore W. Wilson Professor of Literature

And perhaps along the way, on the wings of the fabled Carik birds from the tale, some of those answers will appear somewhere amidst the infinite spectrum between Bob Dylan’s song lyrics and the ingredients to Cocoa Puffs cereal. Sawyer Redwine, happens upon his own chance at redemption by stumbling into the life of Ashton James during a robbery. They hightail their lives across country in order to create a fresh start careening into Blaiku “Willy” Williams, the final piece in this triangle of fate. From the festive weirdness of a religious carnival located in Iowa to the eccentric values of a cosmetics mogul in Minneapolis, the triumvirate’s journey unfolds under a tabloid, fashion reporter’s eyes. Interwoven in the trio’s new America are an angel who appears to be Ted Nugent, a Mafia hitman trying to become a rodeo clown, an elderly woman who speaks only through Hallmark cards, and an obsessive narrator with a bloated ego and a magically spiked six-pack of beer.

Urban Policy in a Changing Federal System

Out Of Sorts Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Urban Policy in a Changing Federal System by National Research Council,Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Committee on National Urban Policy Book Summary:

When the United States' founding fathers set up a federal system of government, they asked a question that has never been satisfactorily settled: How much governmental authority belongs to the states, and how much to the national government? In an atmosphere of changing priorities and power bases, the Committee on National Urban Policy convened a symposium to address this division. The symposium examined the "New Federalism" as it relates to the Supreme Court, urban development, taxpayers, job training, and related topics. "Throughout the symposium the future evolution of the American federal system was debated," says the book's summary. "Yet whatever new idea or theory emerges, it is likely to continue to include the inevitable conflict between the allegiance to a national government and the respect for state and local loyalties."
