Marked by Devah Pager Book Summary:

Nearly every job application asks it: have you ever been convicted of a crime? For the hundreds of thousands of young men leaving American prisons each year, their answer to that question may determine whether they can find work and begin rebuilding their lives. The product of an innovative field experiment, Marked gives us our first real glimpse into the tremendous difficulties facing ex-offenders in the job market. Devah Pager matched up pairs of young men, randomly assigned them criminal records, then sent them on hundreds of real job searches throughout the city of Milwaukee. Her applicants were attractive, articulate, and capable—yet ex-offenders received less than half the callbacks of the equally qualified applicants without criminal backgrounds. Young black men, meanwhile, paid a particularly high price: those with clean records fared no better in their job searches than white men just out of prison. Such shocking barriers to legitimate work, Pager contends, are an important reason that many ex-prisoners soon find themselves back in the realm of poverty, underground employment, and crime that led them to prison in the first place. “Using scholarly research, field research in Milwaukee, and graphics, [Pager] shows that ex-offenders, white or black, stand a very poor chance of getting a legitimate job. . . . Both informative and convincing.”—Library Journal “Marked is that rare book: a penetrating text that rings with moral concern couched in vivid prose—and one of the most useful sociological studies in years.”—Michael Eric Dyson

Marked Point Processes on the Real Line

Marked Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Marked Point Processes on the Real Line by Günter Last,Andreas Brandt Book Summary:

This book gives a self-contained introduction to the dynamic martingale approach to marked point processes (MPP). Based on the notion of a compensator, this approach gives a versatile tool for analyzing and describing the stochastic properties of an MPP. In particular, the authors discuss the relationship of an MPP to its compensator and particular classes of MPP are studied in great detail. The theory is applied to study properties of dependent marking and thinning, to prove results on absolute continuity of point process distributions, to establish sufficient conditions for stochastic ordering between point and jump processes, and to solve the filtering problem for certain classes of MPPs.

Marked Women

Marked Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Marked Women by Russell Campbell Book Summary:

Julia Roberts played a prostitute, famously, in Pretty Woman. So did Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver, Jane Fonda in Klute, Anna Karina in Vivre sa vie, Greta Garbo in Anna Christie, and Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award for Monster. This engaging and generously illustrated study explores the depiction of female prostitute characters and prostitution in world cinema, from the silent era to the present-day industry. From the woman with control over her own destiny to the woman who cannot get away from her pimp, Russell Campbell shows the diverse representations of prostitutes in film. Marked Women classifies fifteen recurrent character types and three common narratives, many of them with their roots in male fantasy. The “Happy Hooker,” for example, is the liberated woman whose only goal is to give as much pleasure as she receives, while the “Avenger,” a nightmare of the male imagination, represents the threat of women taking retribution for all the oppression they have suffered at the hands of men. The “Love Story,” a common narrative, represents the prostitute as both heroine and anti-heroine, while “Condemned to Death” allows men to manifest, in imagination only, their hostility toward women by killing off the troubled prostitute in an act of cathartic violence. The figure of the woman whose body is available at a price has fascinated and intrigued filmmakers and filmgoers since the very beginning of cinema, but the manner of representation has also been highly conflicted and fiercely contested. Campbell explores the cinematic prostitute as a figure shaped by both reactionary thought and feminist challenges to the norm, demonstrating how the film industry itself is split by fascinating contradictions.

The Post-Marked World

Marked Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Post-Marked World by Krystyna Kujawińska Courtney,Izabella Penier,Sumit Chakrabarti Book Summary:

It is a cliché now to claim that we live in a “post”-marked world, and indeed the “post-isms” are some of the most used, and abused, expressions in the language. In a general sense, the various kinds of “post-isms” are regarded as a rejection of a prevailing number of cultural certainties on which our life in the so-called Western world has been structured since the eighteenth century. Engaging with the “post-isms” can be regarded as both a philosophical and political endeavour, which demonstrates, among other things, the instability of language, meaning, narrativity and generally any formal systems. In the wake of such theoretical aporia, this volume represents an investigation in the (re)thinking of the implications of the term “post” in current theoretical parlance. Is there a politics always/already embedded within the “post”? Do we need the “post” any more? Did we, in the first place, need it at all? Is it possible to counter essentialism with the “post” prefix? These are some of the questions the volume raises and explores by examining the “post”-marked terms in the theoretical market. The essays included in this volume address different and relevant issues related to the idea of the “post,” and those that are representative of different parts of the globe. Thus a reader of the volume will not only have a bird’s eye view of the various disciplines where the concept of the “post” is used, but also an eclectic range of contributions about issues that engage with different socio-political dynamics from various parts of the world.

A Marked Heart

Marked Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Marked Heart by David George Ball Book Summary:

The son of a missionary and a Baptist minister, seventeen-year-old immigrant David George Ball was following his destiny to become a pastor. He had always dreamed of making a difference in people's lives. But when he met the then relatively unknown Martin Luther King Jr., the course of Ball's life changed forever. In this memoir, "A Marked Heart, Ball" narrates his journey: beginning with growing up in wartime England; immigrating to the United States in 1954 to take the pastor's course at Chicago's Moody Bible Institute; attending Yale University as a scholarship student; and, most importantly, meeting King. Later, he worked on Wall Street as a lawyer, started a family, championed the 401(k) plan, and served as assistant secretary of labor. "A Marked Heart" describes how Ball's encounter with King inspired the rest of his life's work, and it provides a multifaceted look at his immigration, education, family relationships, career, and his commitment to public service. Though Ball never became a minister, his story communicates how his commitment to God and prayer guided his life. "A heartwarming portrait of faith pushing back against adversity, in an amazing journey inspired by Martin Luther King." -The Right Reverend Herman Hollerith IV, Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia Episcopal Church "In his early life, David George Ball, like Mr. Justice Homes, had the break of being 'touched with fire, ' having a religious father, a strict mother, and contact with Martin Luther King Jr. If this nation is to remain great, such ideas as expressed in David's book should be introduced to persons in their last year of high school or their first year of college." -William T. Coleman Jr., O'Melveny & Myers, Former Chairman of NAACP Legal Defense Fund 1977-1997, Secretary of Transportation 1975-1977

Marked by Fire

Marked Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Marked by Fire by Patricia Damery,Naomi Ruth Lowinsky Book Summary:

This life is the way, the long sought after way to the unfathomable which we call divine.—The Red Book Marked by Fire: Stories of the Jungian Way is a collection that includes and illuminates the inner life. When Soul appeared to C.G. Jung and demanded he change his life, he opened himself to the powerful forces of the unconscious. He recorded his inner journey, his conversations with figures that appeared to him in vision and in dream in The Red Book. Although it would be years before The Red Book was published, much of what we now know as Jungian psychology began in those pages, when Jung allowed the irrational to assault him. That was a century ago. How do those of us who dedicate ourselves to Jung's psychology as analysts, teachers, writers respond to Soul's demands in our own lives? If we believe, with Jung, in "the reality of the psyche," how does that shape us? The articles in Marked By Fire portray direct experiences of the unconscious; they tell life stories about the fiery process of becoming ourselves. Contributors to this edition of the Fisher King Review include: Jerome Bernstein, Claire Douglas, Gilda Frantz, Jacqueline Gerson, Jean Kirsch, Chie Lee, Karlyn Ward, Henry Abramovitch, Sharon Heath, Dennis Patrick Slatterly, Robert Romanyshyn, Patricia Damery, and Naomi Ruth Lowinsky.

A Marked Man by Matt Doeden Book Summary:

February 21, 1965. Controversial civil rights leader Malcolm X is gunned down during a speech in Manhattan. Few were shocked by the news of Malcolm X's death. Since 1952 the former member of the Nation of Islam had supported the Nation's philosophy of violence as the method to achieve justice for blacks in the United States. But in March 1964, after a major shift in his philosophy, Malcolm changed his message. He no longer agreed with the Nation of Islam and feuded with its leaders. He knew that someone would try to kill him. Nearly one year later, that time finally came. The 39-year-old was shot in public at point-blank range. The news devastated Malcolm's followers. But other people reacted with relief. Malcolm X had always been a lightning rod. Some had felt he did the civil rights movement more harm than good. Still others—including leaders of the Nation of Islam—reacted with joy. Malcolm X had become an inconvenience to them and now he was out of the way. Three men were found guilty of the murder. But rumors of conspiracy and cover-up still swirl. Who gave the order for Malcolm X's murder? Why did two of the convicted killers insist upon their innocence—even after being released from prison in the 1980s? In this chronicle of an assassination, find out the answers to these questions and learn more about the impact of Malcolm X's life, and his death, on civil rights in the United States.

Marked for Life by Dorothy Myers Book Summary:

Adonai sits upon the circle of the Earth, holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. The key to the House of David is upon the shoulder of Jesus Christ. The proverbial 'end time' is upon us. Adonai will remove the righteous from the evil to come, but Satan opens not the doors to the house of his prisoners. All prophesy points to the past, and the future. Warnings, concerning what to look for, so that specific events will not catch us unawares, are relevant today. Christianity looks to be flourishing, as world satellites show thousands stepping out in faith. However, the Imposter and Anti-Christ will also appear as a man from Adonai. Marked For Life will reveal the characteristics of the Anti-Christ and his 'mark'. Biblical history reveals symbols of the Jewish faith and Hebrew prophesy that are clues to what to expect from the 'man of sin'. The final battle and the end of evil will take place. Read, and know who will escape the 'mark of the beast,' and how.

Marked for Death by Geert Wilders Book Summary:

Marked for Death Fanatics, terrorists, and appeasers have tried everything to silence Geert Wilders, Europe’s most controversial Member of Parliament—from putting him on trial to putting a price on his head. But Wilders refuses to be silenced—and one result is the book you have in your hands. For years, from his native Netherlands, Wilders has sounded the alarm about the relentless spread of Islam in the West. And he has paid a steep personal price, enduring countless death threats and being forced into a permanent state of hiding. Now, for the first time, Wilders offers a full account of his long battle against the zealots who have already slaughtered his countryman Theo van Gogh—whose killer also threatened to murder Wilders himself. In Marked for Death, Wilders reveals: How—and why—liberal politicians, including Barack Obama, downplay the Islamic threat The systematic suppression of free speech through lawsuits, prosecutions, threats, and violence meted out against Islam’s critics The untold story: how Islamic groups are redefining human rights to suppress non-Muslims everywhere The true, bloody history of Islam’s spread throughout the world How the West can defend itself against an existential enemy determined to conquer the globe Expelled from Britain, banned from Indonesia, denounced by the UN Secretary General, prosecuted in court for his beliefs, forced into government safe houses, and constantly threatened with death, Geert Wilders is unbowed and unapologetic. Marked for Death is a stark warning about a growing threat to our liberties written by a man who has lost his freedom—and would not see the rest of us suffer the same fate.
