Sharing Friendship

How To Develop Your Local Church [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Sharing Friendship by John B. Thomson Book Summary:

Sharing Friendship represents a post-liberal approach to ecclesiology and theology generated out of the history, practices and traditions of the Anglican Church. Drawing on the theological ethics of Stanley Hauerwas, this book explores the way friendship for the stranger emerges from contextually grounded reflection and conversations with contemporary Anglican theologians within the English tradition, including John Milbank, Oliver O’Donovan, Rowan Williams, Daniel Hardy and Anthony Thiselton. Avoiding abstract definitions of character, mission or friendship, John Thomson explores how the history of the English Church reflects a theology of friendship and how discipleship in the New Testament, the performance of worship, and the shape of Anglican ecclesiology are congruent with such a theology. The book concludes by rooting the theme of sharing friendship within the self-emptying kenotic performance of Jesus’ mission, and looks at challenges to the character of contemporary Anglican ecclesiology represented by secularization and globalization as well as by arguments over appropriate new initiatives such as Fresh Expressions.

Child Safety Guidelines for Local Churches

How To Develop Your Local Church [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Child Safety Guidelines for Local Churches by Roger N. McNamara Book Summary:

Child Safety Guidelines for Local Churches deals with the sensitive subject of child sexual abuse and what churches can do to protect children under their care while at the same time minimizing their own liability. Prevention and training are critical elements in developing a structure that ensures the safety of children while they are in God's house. Sadly, many churches are unprepared to combat the possibility of the unthinkable happening to one of their precious little ones. By not taking reasonable precautions, they not only endanger the welfare of their youngsters, but are subject to charges of gross negligence and significant financial judgments against their congregations. The author outlines numerous steps that any congregation can take to protect both the children and churches they serve.ROGER MCNAMARA is a veteran pastor, missionary, and church planter with more than forty-six years of experience in local church ministry in Latin America and the United States. Prison Religion

How To Develop Your Local Church [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Prison Religion by Winnifred Fallers Sullivan Book Summary:

More than the citizens of most countries, Americans are either religious or in jail--or both. But what does it mean when imprisonment and evangelization actually go hand in hand, or at least appear to? What do "faith-based" prison programs mean for the constitutional separation of church and state, particularly when prisoners who participate get special privileges? In Prison Religion, law and religion scholar Winnifred Fallers Sullivan takes up these and other important questions through a close examination of a 2005 lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a faith-based residential rehabilitation program in an Iowa state prison. Americans United for the Separation of Church and State v. Prison Fellowship Ministries, a trial in which Sullivan served as an expert witness, centered on the constitutionality of allowing religious organizations to operate programs in state-run facilities. Using the trial as a case study, Sullivan argues that separation of church and state is no longer possible. Religious authority has shifted from institutions to individuals, making it difficult to define religion, let alone disentangle it from the state. Prison Religion casts new light on church-state law, the debate over government-funded faith-based programs, and the predicament of prisoners who have precious little choice about what kind of rehabilitation they receive, if they are offered any at all.

Participation and Social Learning in Church-based Organizations

How To Develop Your Local Church [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Participation and Social Learning in Church-based Organizations by Peter Obele Abue Book Summary:

Developing countries are increasingly faced with the lack of alternative institutions to counter the social processes entrenched in local settings that lead to poverty. In this book, the author investigates the potentials of Churchbased organizations (CBOs) as alternative mechanisms, and suggests a communitarian approach to poverty eradication as a back up to the past and present approaches offered by modernism and post modernism respectively. Both the upcoming theory of Social Learning and the age-old principle of Participation are used as a theoretical framework, with empirical data from the diocese of Ogoja, Nigeria. The author investigates key research questions such as: How do churches learn to build on the capacity of individuals and groups as stakeholders that influence poverty eradication at the local level? How do Churches as organizations learn to become social change agents? This book enunciates a new dimension to the development discourse and the ongoing fight against poverty and it is highly recommended for scholars of international development in their effort to proffer a holistic solution to the problem of poverty and its eradication. The third approach to poverty according to the author is a communitarian approach that examines the organizational dynamics of a diocese in relation to the Social Justice Agenda of the Roman Catholic Church. I recommend this book to pastors of churches, local church communities and their leaders both in developed and developing countries who seek a sincere approach to sustainable development. Most Rev. Dr. John E. Ayah: Catholic Bishop of Ogoja, Nigeria. In this book the author ascribes another perspective to poverty eradication by focusing on social praxis, thus giving a practical dimension to the role of religion especially for communities in developing countries. As a scientist, I recommend this book to researchers in general, in a quest for the meaning of development. Derek Cabrera: PhD in Human Ecology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.

For examples, Alvin Reid writes on Mobilizing Students, David Wheeler on Servant Evangelism, Josef Solc on Sports Evangelism, and Darrell Robinson on The Evangelist. In addition, the book begins and ends with two different applications of Matthew's Great Commission. Mobilizing a Great Commission Church for Harvest is a gold mine of information for both pastor and deacon, as it is for students considering the importance of evangelism to local church ministry. How To Develop Your Local Church [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Building a People of Power by Robert C. Linthicum Book Summary:

Jesus never intended the church to become an institution; he intended it to be a people of power, transforming the world. Power is the capacity, ability, and the willingness to act. Most people and systems use power to dominate and control, but others have used it relationally to liberate, transform, and even save. Built around a biblical exploration of shalom, Building a People of Power explains how local churches can use power to transform their communities and their cities. Detailed power strategies are presented enabling churches to build productive relationships, to address the primary issues of people they serve, and to develop strong leaders, faithful organizations, and redeemed neighborhoods that live out shalom.
