Haunted Scotland

Haunted Scotland [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Haunted Scotland by Norman Adams Book Summary:

This is a collection of stories gathered from all over Scotland. In his search for ghosts, the author has travelled to haunted castles and mansions, battlefields and hostelries from the Borders to the Highlands and Islands. This book graphically records the true hauntings. Castles and mansions, it would seem, are not the only domain of these phantoms. The stories reveal ghostly apparitions and activities on wartime airfields, factories, caravan parks and even a North Sea oil rig. The stories include the teenage boy who was pursued by a ghost, the family terrified by a faceless phantom and the hooded spectre who drove a young couple from their dream home.

Sounding Imperial

Haunted Scotland [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Sounding Imperial by James Mulholland Book Summary:

In Sounding Imperial, James Mulholland offers a new assessment of the origins, evolution, and importance of poetic voice in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. By examining a series of literary experiments in which authors imitated oral voices and impersonated foreign speakers, Mulholland uncovers an innovative global aesthetics of poetic voice that arose as authors invented new ways of crafting textual voices and appealing to readers. As poets drew on cultural forms from around Great Britain and across the globe, impersonating "primitive" speakers and reviving ancient oral performances (or fictionalizing them in verse), they invigorated English poetry. Mulholland situates these experiments with oral voices and foreign speakers within the wider context of British nationalism at home and colonial expansion overseas. Sounding Imperial traces this global aesthetic by reading texts from canonical authors like Thomas Gray, James Macpherson, and Felicia Hemans together with lesser-known writers, like Welsh antiquarians, Anglo-Indian poets of colonialism, and impersonators of Pacific islanders. The frenetic borrowing, movement, and adaptation of verse of this time offers a powerful analytic by which scholars can understand anew poetry’s role in the formation of national culture and the exercise of colonial power. Sounding Imperial offers a more nuanced sense of poetry’s unseen role in larger historical processes, emphasizing not just appropriation or collusion but the murky middle range in which most British authors operated during their colonial encounters and the voices that they used to make those cross-cultural encounters seem vivid and alive.

The Arts in the 1970s

Haunted Scotland [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Arts in the 1970s by Dr Bart Moore-Gilbert,Bart Moore-Gilbert Book Summary:

Were the 1970s really `the devils decade'? Images of strikes, galloping inflation, rising unemployment and bitter social divisions evoke a period of unparalleled economic decline, political confrontation and social fragmentation. But how significant were the pessimism and self-doubt of the 1970s, and what was the legacy of its cultural conflicts? Covering the entire spectrum of the arts - drama, television, film, poetry, the novel, popular music, dance, cinema and the visual arts - The Arts in the 1970s challenges received perceptions of the decade as one of cultural decline. The collection breaks new ground in providing the first detailed analysis of the cultural production of the decade as a whole, providing an invaluable resource for all those involved in cultural, media and communications studies.

Haunted narratives

Haunted Scotland [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Haunted narratives by Gabriele Rippl,Philipp Schweighauser,Tiina Kirss,Margit Sutrop,Therese Steffen Book Summary:

Exploring life writing from a variety of cultural contexts, Haunted Narratives provides new insights into how individuals and communities across time and space deal with traumatic experiences and haunting memories. From the perspectives of trauma theory, memory studies, gender studies, literary studies, philosophy, and post-colonial studies, the volume stresses the lingering, haunting presence of the past in the present. The contributors focus on the psychological, ethical, and representational difficulties involved in narrative negotiations of traumatic memories. Haunted Narratives focuses on life writing in the broadest sense of the term: biographies and autobiographies that deal with traumatic experiences, autobiographically inspired fictions on loss and trauma, and limit-cases that transcend clear-cut distinctions between the factual and the fictional. In discussing texts as diverse as Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Vikram Seth’s Two Lives, deportation narratives of Baltic women, Christa Wolf’s Kindheitsmuster, Joy Kogawa’s Obasan, and Ene Mihkelson’s Ahasveeruse uni, the contributors add significantly to current debates on life writing, trauma, and memory; the contested notion of “cultural trauma”; and the transferability of clinical-psychological notions to the study of literature and culture.

Scottish Ghosts and Witches

Haunted Scotland [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Scottish Ghosts and Witches by G. Stewart Book Summary:

Was the sacrificial pool at the Druid's Den close to St Andrews used for human sacrifices? What lies within the structure of the viaduct made famous in the Harry Potter films? Why were seventeen miniature coffins buried in a cave on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh and what is their possible connection with the serial killers Burke and Hare? What lurked in the attic room of an Edinburgh guest house? Why were those convicted of witchcraft denied sleep? What terrified a group of World War Two soldiers causing them to flee their temporary barracks at a Highland castle? Scotland is known worldwide for its legends, mystical locations and haunted places. In this book, the author explores many of the mysterious and haunted sites in the country, concentrating mainly on the less well-known stories and offering the unique perspective of his own views and findings having visited the location, where possible. Several photographs taken by the author showing unusual anomalies are included for the reader's consideration. The world famous Loch Ness is also covered, however, rather than simply re-telling tales of the sightings, a brief history of the Loch and it's well known inhabitant is given; along with the author's own theory on the monster. Book 2 in the Haunted Explorer Series. Other titles available; Scotland's Hidden Hauntings Haunted Scottish Castles and Houses
