David and the Phoenix by , Book Summary:

David has no greater wish than to explore the mountains behind his new home in North Carolina and as he does he finds a wonder never dreamed of, the Phoenix. The Phoenix introduces David to an endless list of his friends from mythology and in the process opens David's eyes to the wide world both the unseen world and seen world. In the unseen world David and the Phoenix share many adventures all the while a scientist is trying to capture the Phoenix to prove to the world that the bird is real. The phoenix takes David on "educational field trips" to meet sea monsters, fauns and other creatures. Plus they hatch a hysterical plot to scare off an over eager scientist from the phoenix's trail. David learns some valuable lessons about life, one is that nothing remains the same as one grows up. The other is... well perhaps you should read the book yourself and find your own lessons within the pages. A well written story, "David and the Phoenix" has no particular time setting so that it could very well be placed in current time. It brings back to me memories of times when life was much simpler, more pleasant and without the problems we as adults face. It's a story of childhood and the dreams that children of every age share and which we all to soon leave behind. Of course, there is the traditional fiery death of the phoenix in the story.

The Phoenix Program by Douglas Valentine Book Summary:

“This shocking expose of the CIA operation aimed at destroying the Vietcong infrastructure thoroughly conveys the hideousness of the Vietnam War” (Publishers Weekly). In the darkest days of the Vietnam War, America’s Central Intelligence Agency secretly initiated a sweeping program of kidnap, torture, and assassination devised to destabilize the infrastructure of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam, commonly known as the “Viet Cong.” The victims of the Phoenix Program were Vietnamese civilians, male and female, suspected of harboring information about the enemy—though many on the blacklist were targeted by corrupt South Vietnamese security personnel looking to extort money or remove a rival. Between 1965 and 1972, more than eighty thousand noncombatants were “neutralized,” as men and women alike were subjected to extended imprisonment without trial, horrific torture, brutal rape, and in many cases execution, all under the watchful eyes of US government agencies. Based on extensive research and in-depth interviews with former participants and observers, Douglas Valentine’s startling exposé blows the lid off of what was possibly the bloodiest and most inhumane covert operation in the CIA’s history. The ebook edition includes “The Phoenix Has Landed,” a new introduction that addresses the “Phoenix-style network” that constitutes America’s internal security apparatus today. Residents on American soil are routinely targeted under the guise of protecting us from terrorism—which is why, more than ever, people need to understand what Phoenix is all about.

Auel, author of the Earth’s Children series). A draconian ruling class. A slave rebellion threatening to boil over. A clandestine organization that has limitless power so long as it stays in the shadows. Concord is a hell of a place to die. In M.K. Wren’s mesmerizing trilogy (Sword of the Lamb, Shadow of the Swan, House of the Wolf), a hero defies his birthright to achieve a greater purpose—leading the citizens of Concord to freedom. Doing so may cost the one-time Lord Alexand everything he holds dear, from his love to his own life. With a breathtaking sweep and unforgettable characters, M.K. Song of the Phoenix by Lily Fairchilde Book Summary:

In Egyptian mythology, the phoenix was a bird that rose from the ashes of death to attain immortality. In this book, spiritual healer and counselor Lily Fairchilde takes us on a magical voyage during which we learn, in the words of those who have gone on before, what awaits each of us after life on Earth is over. What happens when a child dies, a friend commits suicide, or a lost soul finally ends a dark, Earthly life? In Song of the Phoenix, we encounter many different souls, accompanied by their spiritual guides of angels, who explain the significance of their stories. Rather than a place of reward and punishment, the afterlife is a wondrous experience of ongoing growth and understanding. - Ruth surrendered to despair after her husband's wartime death and committed suicide, also killing her unborn child. Terrified of punishment, her soul resisted passing over until her guardian angel convinced her that only love and understanding awaited her. - Joey was a six-year-old who was killed in a sledding accident and whose parents agonized over his death. He yearns only to reassure them that he has entered a glorious world of brilliant light. - Edith and Frank are troubled spirits who cleave to earthly souls who share their addictions to overeating and alcohol, But their guardians refuse to abandon them until they realize that a far more rewarding joy awaits them if only they accept it. - Xavier has led an evil life as a sadistic killer, and his soul suffers torment in a wasteland of isolation and pain. But even he has a guardian angel, who patiently waits for him to receive the love and encouragement that will guide him home. These extraordinary personal stories, told by Lily Fairchilde, bring a message of glowing hope and comfort to all those who have suffered the agony of loss or are confronting the fear of death themselves. Profound and compassionate, this book shows the living how to make peace with death.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls Book Summary:

Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts. MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

The Phoenix and the Carpet by E. Nesbit Book Summary:

'I love her books - particularly the Five Children and It sequence' - Neil Gaiman THIS IS THE SECOND BOOK IN THE PSAMMEAD TRILOGY, FOLLOWING FIVE CHILDREN AND IT Contains all of the original illustrations by H. R. Millar, beautifully reproduced. 'For the egg was now red-hot, and inside it something was moving. Next moment there was a soft cracking sound; the egg burst in two, and out of it came a flame-coloured bird...' When a stone egg rolls out of the old rug that has been bought for the nursery, the children think nothing of it. A lovely glowing yellow, they place it on the mantelpiece to brighten up the room. But when the egg accidentally drops into the fire, a strange thing happens: out hatches a phoenix, resplendent in golden feathers - and very vain. If that weren't enough of a surprise, it tells them that their carpet is magic: it will take them to any place that they wish to visit - over their dusty London streets to the French coast, to tropical islands and an Indian bazaar. Guiding them throughout their adventures - though he's often more a hindrance than a help - is their new friend, the phoenix. 'The cheerful, child-centred anarchy of Five Children and It is still my inspiration and delight' Kate Saunders, Guardian 'My all-time favourite classic children's author' Jacqueline Wilson 'If Britain is to children's fantasy as Brazil is to football, then Edith Nesbit is our Pele - endlessly surprising and inventive. But she is more than that. There were fantasy writers before Edith Nesbit but she is the one that brought the magical and the mundane together in a moment of nuclear fusion. She opened the door in the magic wardrobe, pointed the way to platform nine and three quarters. She even had a hand in building the Tardis. And these are among her minor achievements. She is also simply the funniest writer we have ever had, while being the one who could most easily and sweetly break your heart with a phrase. Just try saying "Daddy oh my Daddy" without catching your breath. She made the magic worlds feel as near as the Lewisham Road and she bathed the Lewisham Road in magic' Frank Cottrell-Boyce This collection of the best in children's literature, curated by Virago, will be coveted by children and adults alike. These are timeless tales with beautiful covers, that will be treasured and shared across the generations. Some titles you will already know; some will be new to you, but there are stories for everyone to love, whatever your age.
