The Gathering Tide

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Gathering Tide by Karen Lloyd Book Summary:

Karen Lloyd takes us on a deeply personal journey around the 60 miles of coastline that make up "nature s amphitheatre." Embarking on a series of walks that take in beguiling landscapes and ever-changing seascapes, Karen tells the stories of the places, people, wildlife, and history of Morecambe Bay. So we meet the Queen s Guide to the Sands, discover forgotten caves and islands that don t exist, and delight in the simple beauty of an oystercatcher winging its way across the ebbing tide. As we walk with Karen, she explores her own memories of the bay, making an unwitting pilgrimage through her own past and present, as well as that of the bay. The result is a singular and moving account of one of Britain s most alluring coastal areas."

Gathering the Tide

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Gathering the Tide by Patty Paine,Jeff Lodge,Samia Touati Book Summary:

Gathering the Tide: An Anthology of Contemporary Arabian Gulf Poetry brings readers into the rich and vibrant world of the Arabian Gulf, offering an understanding of the people and culture of the region through poetry. A handful of anthologies represent the Middle East in general, or individual Middle Eastern countries; however, this is the first collection that presents poets from across the Arabian Gulf. The Arabian Gulf has a distinct and deeply rooted tradition of poetry and a thriving contemporary literary community. This anthology offers an exciting collection of poems by poets from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Gathering the Tide makes available to English-language readers the important literary work being undertaken by the poets of the Arabian Gulf. The anthology includes poetry from established and rising poets in the region and encompasses a wide range of poems and poets, from the work of Laala Kashef Alghata, a nineteen-year-old poet from Bahrain, to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai. While several of the poets composed their poems in English, most of the poems were translated from Arabic to English by an exceptional team of accomplished translators. The Gulf has attracted global attention for its explosive growth, and the poets within contemplate every-thing from souks to shopping malls, to love, loss, and solitude, to war, peace and beyond. -- Product Description.

Tides of History

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Tides of History by Michael S. Reidy Book Summary:

In the first half of the nineteenth century, the British sought to master the physical properties of the oceans; in the second half, they lorded over large portions of the oceans’ outer rim. The dominance of Her Majesty’s navy was due in no small part to collaboration between the British Admiralty, the maritime community, and the scientific elite. Together, they transformed the vast emptiness of the ocean into an ordered and bounded grid. In the process, the modern scientist emerged. Science itself expanded from a limited and local undertaking receiving parsimonious state support to worldwide and relatively well financed research involving a hierarchy of practitioners. Analyzing the economic, political, social, and scientific changes on which the British sailed to power, Tides of History shows how the British Admiralty collaborated closely not only with scholars, such as William Whewell, but also with the maritime community —sailors, local tide table makers, dockyard officials, and harbormasters—in order to systematize knowledge of the world’s oceans, coasts, ports, and estuaries. As Michael S. Reidy points out, Britain’s security and prosperity as a maritime nation depended on its ability to maneuver through the oceans and dominate coasts and channels. The practice of science and the rise of the scientist became inextricably linked to the process of European expansion.

The Blackbird Diaries

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Blackbird Diaries by Karen Lloyd Book Summary:

Lakeland Book of the Year 2018, Bookends Prize for Art and Literature, WINNER. With its enchanting song, striking orange bill and endearing willingness to share our living space, the blackbird is one of our best-loved birds. But robins, swifts, goldfinches and blue tits captivate us equally and, in The Blackbird Diaries, Karen Lloyd shares her deep-rooted affection for British wildlife and issues a clarion call for the conservation of endangered habitats and species – most notably the curlew, Europe's largest wading bird. Over the four seasons, Karen intimately chronicles the drama and the joy, the perils and the pleasures of the natural world as it all unfolds in her garden and on her daily walks in the limestone hills and valleys of Cumbria's South Lakeland. What emerges is a celebration of landscapes that rarely feature in the existing canon of nature writing, and rare insights into the lives of the species that may be common but are remarkable creatures all. "Sure to delight readers and fans of British wildlife... Like all good nature writing books, Lloyd's prose is to be savoured. Not raced through and devoured like the latest crime thriller, but to be absorbed, enjoyed and reflected upon." Megan Shersby, BBC Countryfile magazine "A writer of rare talent... Lloyd quietly and unassumingly shares her observations of nature, drawing you into a world made rich with the company of birds. Nothing is beyond her eye – from wavering flocks of lapwing, or the mad arcs of swifts to the majesty of sea eagles, the evening sunlight caught crystalline in their eyes." Miriam Darlington, BBC Wildlife "A charming and informative account... [Lloyd] has a keen eye and a quiet, understated way of describing her neighbourhood that I found captivating. It brought to mind the writing of ... Kathleen Jamie ... Keenly observed." Katharine Norbury, Caught by the River

Entertaining Satan

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Entertaining Satan by John Putnam Demos Book Summary:

In the first edition of the Bancroft Prize-winning Entertaining Satan, John Putnam Demos presented an entirely new perspective on American witchcraft. By investigating the surviving historical documents of over a hundred actual witchcraft cases, he vividly recreated the world of New England during the witchcraft trials and brought to light fascinating information on the role of witchcraft in early American culture. Now Demos has revisited his original work and updated it to illustrate why these early Americans' strange views on witchcraft still matter to us today. He provides a new Preface that puts forth a broader overview of witchcraft and looks at its place around the world--from ancient times right up to the present.

The Power of Premonitions

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Power of Premonitions by Larry Dossey Book Summary:

The doctor – and bestselling author – who first demonstrated the healing effects of prayer now offers an unprecedented look at the science of premonitions. The Power of Premonitions takes readers through documented cases of premonitions, including a remarkable instance when an entire Nebraska community skipped church the very day it exploded; an examination of recent scientific study of 'presentiment'; a discussion of what it all means to daily life; and practical field-tested techniques for inviting premonitions. In this compelling new book Dossey uses cutting-edge science to prove the value of what has long been considered spiritual mumbo-jumbo. This is a book for the sceptical mind, but it's also for the believer's heart – because its author possesses the rare gift of having both.

The Savant and the State

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Savant and the State by Robert Fox Book Summary:

There has been a tendency to view science in nineteenth-century France as the exclusive territory of the nation’s leading academic centers and the powerful Paris-based administrators who controlled them. Ministries and the great savants and institutions of the capital seem to have defined the field, while historians have ignored or glossed over traditions on the periphery of science. In The Savant and the State, Robert Fox charts new historiographical territory by synthesizing the practices and thought of state-sanctioned scientists and those of independent communities of savants and commentators with very different political, religious, and cultural priorities. Fox provides a comprehensive history of the public face of French science from the Bourbon Restoration to the outbreak of the Great War. Following the Enlightenment, many different interests competed to define the role of science and technology in French society. Political and religious conservatives tended to blame the scientific community for upsetting traditional values and, implicitly, delivering France into the hands of revolutionary extremists and Napoleonic bureaucrats. Scientists, for their part, embraced the belief that observation and experimentation offered the surest way to the knowledge and wisdom on which the welfare of society depended. This debate, Fox argues, became a contest for the hearts and minds of the French citizenry.

Sai Baba

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Sai Baba by Howard Murphet Book Summary:

India has always nurtured true yogins--those who have transcended the lower self, those in whom wonder-working powers of siddhis have flourished. These powers, or some of them, have been brought into the research laboratories of the para-psychologists who call them extra-sensory perception and psycho-kinesis. Others call them miracles. Whatever the terminology, such powers and their practitioners demand sensible attention. This account relates some of the achievements of one of the most impressive men of miracles to appear in centuries. Satya Sai Baba--his followers believe him to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi who died in 1918--appears to have been born with phenomenal powers, which he used in childhood and has employed constantly and openly ever since. They include all the varieties of E.S.P. and P.K. known to psychic science and more besides. The author, a Westerner devoted to science and logic, spent many months with Satya Said Baba; he claims to have found that his "unscientific," "illogical" miracles were, in fact, genuine yogic siddhis. He found, too, that along with Christ-like miraculous powers went a Christ-like love, compassion and the God-knowledge that opens the door to a new vision of life.

Waking from a Fallen Dream

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Waking from a Fallen Dream by Michael Bohoskey Book Summary:

What if Jesus never died for you? What if his sole intention was to teach unconditional and universal love not only for you but for the entire world? Michael John Bohoskey challenges us to take a different look at the role of Jesus Christ-and religion in general-in his spiritually awakening memoir, Waking from a Fallen Dream. Even though a variety of Christian teachings defined Bohoskey's early life, he eventually discovered that many of his beliefs had to do with feelings of personal unworthiness and mistrust of his own nature. A former Episcopal priest, Bohoskey began a journey of self-discovery, questioning the most basic fundamentals of Christianity. In Waking from a Fallen Dream, he questions the beliefs that teach us that we are sinful by nature and separate from God. Instead, he believes that we should all wake to our own "knowingness" and empowerment, abandoning the collective programming we have allowed to control us. This is a book about giving oneself permission to question, explore, choose, live, and love without apology. Waking from a Fallen Dream is Bohoskey's heartfelt story of how he shed multiple uniforms of belief and behavior while following the yellow-brick road of inner knowledge, allowing him to experience spiritual integrity and give unconditional love the opportunity to unfold.

The Oxfam Poverty Report

Gathering Tide [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Oxfam Poverty Report by Kevin Watkins Book Summary:

Fifty years ago, the United Nations Charter proclaimed universal rights to shared prosperity, peace, and security. How far has that vision of world citizenship been realised? Despite advances in human welfare and technology, there is today a growing polarisation between rich and poor. One in four of the world's people live in absolute poverty, unable to meet their basic needs; armed conflict is affecting millions of people; and the global environment is under threat. Yet there is a failure of political will to address the silent emergency of poverty. The Oxfam Poverty Report draws on Oxfam's experience of working in over 70 countries, to examine the causes of poverty and conflict. It identifies the structural forces which deny people their basic rights, and gives a wide range of examples of the ways in which men and women are bringing about positive change at every level, from the household to the international arena. Oxfam believes that it is time to renew the UN vision of universal basic rights. The Report concludes by proposing policy and institutional reforms which would transform international institutions and trading relations, and calls for a new commitment to work together to eradicate poverty and bring sustainable peace and security for all the world's people.
