This book is intended as a fairly complete presentation of what··'We call the discretization approach to functional integrals, i.e. path integrals defined as limits of discretized axpressions. In its main parts it is based 0n the original work of the authors. We hope to have provided the readers with a rather complete and up-to-date bibliography, and we apologize to authors whose work has not been cited through ignorance ori our part. Our main concern has been to present a for malism that is practical and which can be adapted to make computations in the numerous areas where path integrals are being increasingly used. For these reasons applications, illustrative examples, and detailed calculations are included. The book is partially based on lectures given by one of us (E.T.) at the Institut de Physique Theorique of the u.c.L. (Louvain-la-Neuve). We thank Dr. M.E. Brachet (University of Paris) for his help in the redaction of chapter 8. We are indebted to many of our colleagues and especially to the members of the Instituut voor Theoretische Fysica, K.U. In addition, an overview is presented on some recent achievements in the theory of the Selberg trace formula on Riemann surfaces, its super generalization, and their use in mathematical physics and quantum chaos. The volume also contains results on the study of the properties of a particular integrable billiard system in the hyperbolic plane, a proposal concerning interbasis expansions for spheroidal coordinate systems in four-dimensional Euclidean space, and some further results derived from the Selberg (super-) trace formula.

The idea of the workshop on Functional Integration, Theory and Applications, held in Louvain-Ia-Neuve from November 6 to 9 1979, was to put in close and informal contact, during a few days, active workers in the field. It is fairly well known that one of Hilbert’s famous list of problems is that of developing an axiomatic theory of mathematical probability theory (this problem could be said to have been solved by Khintchine, Kolmogorov, and Levy), and also among the list is the “axiomatization of physics. What is not so well known is that these are two parts of one and the same problem, namely, the sixth, and that the axiomatics of probability are discussed in the context of the foundations of statistical mechanics. Although Hilbert could not have known it when he formulated his problems, probability theory is also central to the foundations of quantum theory. In this book, I wish to describe a very different interface between probability and mathematical physics, namely, the use of certain notions of integration in function spaces as technical tools in quantum physics. Although Nelson has proposed some connection between these notions and foundational questions, we shall deal solely with their use to answer a variety of questions in conventional quantum theory.
