Young and Slim for Life by Frank Lipman, M.D. Book Summary:

Are you tired of feeling worn out, sick, and overweight? Why is it that we experience weight gain, fatigue, aches and pains, illnesses, and memory loss as we get older? While these ailments do become more common in our 30s and 40s, they aren’t inevitable. In fact, we are perfectly capable of remaining young, slim, and vigorous —and our brains can absolutely stay clear and sharp —if we give them what they need. What’s that? The right foods, plenty of sleep, and the healthy movement our bodies are craving. The problem is that most of us don’t do that. We don’t realize what our bodies need, so we eat the wrong foods, skimp on sleep, and deprive our bodies of the movement they crave. Overwhelmed by the stresses and the pressures of our lives, we take a host of prescriptions, never realizing how they might be disrupting our body’s innate ability to heal. Most insidious of all, many of us lack the personal support and the community that we need to feel fully alive. Instead, we buy into the myth that age means decline. Best-selling author and internationally recognized expert in integrative and functional medicine, Dr. Frank Lipman shares the 10 key steps to live your best life! He breaks through the common myths and misconceptions surrounding aging and dieting, and he zeroes in on what you need to do in order to feel great. His two-week Revitalize Program and extended Maintenance Program bring together key information regarding insulin resistance and carbohydrate intolerance, gut and hormonal imbalances, sleep disorders, medications and supplements, and community support. The book also features: • delicious, nutritious recipes to support you along the way • handy shopping lists and meal plans • simple exercises, meditation practices, and restorative yoga sequences • information about powerful anti-aging and digestive supplements and vitamins • and more! Dr. Lipman also offers a lifelong Maintenance Program, so that after two life-changing weeks, you can continue on your path toward ultimate health and wellness for years to come. In just two weeks —only 14 days —you can feel so much better than you ever imagined!

And Then They Stopped Talking to Me by Judith Warner Book Summary:

Through the stories of kids and parents in the middle school trenches, a New York Times bestselling author reveals why these years are so painful, how parents unwittingly make them worse, and what we all need to do to grow up. “As the parent of a middle schooler, I felt as if Judith Warner had peered into my life—and the lives of many of my patients. This is a gift to our kids and their future selves.”—Lori Gottlieb, author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone The French have a name for the uniquely hellish years between elementary school and high school: l’âge ingrat, or “the ugly age.” Characterized by a perfect storm of developmental changes—physical, psychological, and social—the middle school years are a time of great distress for children and parents alike, marked by hurt, isolation, exclusion, competition, anxiety, and often outright cruelty. Some of this is inevitable; there are intrinsic challenges to early adolescence. But these years are harder than they need to be, and Judith Warner believes that adults are complicit. With deep insight and compassion, Warner walks us through a new understanding of the role that middle school plays in all our lives. She argues that today’s helicopter parents are overly concerned with status and achievement—in some ways a residual effect of their own middle school experiences—and that this worsens the self-consciousness, self-absorption, and social “sorting” so typical of early adolescence. Tracing a century of research on middle childhood and bringing together the voices of social scientists, psychologists, educators, and parents, Warner’s book shows how adults can be moral role models for children, making them more empathetic, caring, and resilient. She encourages us to start treating middle schoolers as the complex people they are, holding them to high standards of kindness, and helping them see one another as more than “jocks and mean girls, nerds and sluts.” Part cultural critique and part call to action, this essential book unpacks one of life’s most formative periods and shows how we can help our children not only survive it but thrive.

Healing Conversations by David Roberts Book Summary:

Healing Conversations brings to life the seven elements of how to have deep and fulfilling conversations so that people can connect in a world with many conversational obstacles. Conversation is the way human beings connect. Great friendships are defined by the way one speaks, listens, and flows through the joy of effortless conversation. As the divisions in culture deepen due to politics, generational misunderstanding, the complexity of gender, the struggle to be politically correct, and every other possible human condition, conversation is becoming more and more dangerous. Most people feel an ever-increasing need to be careful with their words. It may be good to be thoughtful of language, but this is a new kind of carefulness. The anxiety of culture is leading people to communicate less and that leads to isolation and divisiveness. Healing Conversations is a simple way to revolutionize communication. It offers practical help to allow readers to talk their way out of conflict and loneliness. Within Healing Conversations, Dave Roberts helps readers to learn, gain perspective, grow, accomplish real work, come together for a greater good, but even more, helps them to feel intimately connected to the people around them again through the power of conversation.

Less is More by David H. Rosen Book Summary:

Less is More is a collection of eight ten-minute plays. These tiny dramas speak to the necessity to say what is essential in a small number of words. As Shakespeare said, "Brevity is the soul of wit." The first play, "The Dissolution Mask," is by the well-known playwright Nancy West. The next two plays, "Thanatos Calling" and "Leap for Life," are the first ten-minute plays by David H. Rosen and they speak to an area of his research involving suicidology. "The Tea Gown," by known writer Maura Conlon, is a moving ten-minute play. The two gripping plays, "Baby Boomer Blues" and "Flip," were written by the dramaturge Martin Cohen. The final two plays, "True Blue" and "Sisters," are by an inspiring dramatist Eliza Roaring-Springs.

How to Grow a Grown Up by Dr Dominique Thompson,Fabienne Vailes Book Summary:

Whether you have a teen who is struggling with exam pressure, a young adult who hasn’t settled into university life or you are curious about what lies ahead for your younger child, How to Grow a Grown Up will help you to build your child's confidence and resilience - so they can become a strong, happy and independent adult. We’re fast approaching the 3rd decade of the 21st century and it’s a very different world from the one in which parents (and teachers) grew up in. Challenging issues have come together – including cyber bullying, ‘always-on’ culture and ever increasing pressure to do well – to create a perfect storm. The result is that teenagers and young adults are now less prepared for a more challenging world – and if they don’t develop the skills they need to help them thrive they can become easy prey to mental health problems. In this book Dr Dominique Thompson, the UK’s leading GP on student mental health and educational expert Fabienne Vailes, reveal what exactly parents need to do to help teenagers and young adults in this new world – and how to manage problems along the way. It includes: *An overview of the pressures and problems facing this generation of young people - why are they increasingly stressed, anxious or suffering from mental health issues *What exactly parents can do to help their teens and young adults become healthily independent, navigate challenges and flourish in preparation for adult life *How pastoral care at universities and workplaces is changing, and what a parent’s role could and should be *Ways to recognise the signs of mental health distress and what to do about it, particularly dealing with problems from a distance

Inspirational Stories from the Pulpit by Rev. Wesley Moss Book Summary:

The collection of inspirational stories, food for thought, famous quotes, and humor is the result of more than ten years as senior pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee, and more than thirty-eight years of preaching and teaching. It is my hope that clergy and professional speakers as well as ordinary individuals will become better communicators in any setting using this easy to read and absorb material. It is also my hope that this collection will mentally stimulate the reader to do or feel something, especially to do something creative and spontaneous. Quoting from Mother Theresa: "The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or Leprosy, it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared-for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty . . . it is not only the poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God." (Mother Theresa, A Simple Path: Mother Theresa) In most of the inspirational stories, you will be able to experience God's love for humankind and His love for you, and at the same time demonstrate your love for God through your love for neighbor as suggested by Mother Teresa's quote. Even though I'm very acquainted with the section on humor, I find myself laughing out loud each time I revisit this section. If you are an introvert (quiet or your attention is mainly on yourself), this humor will make you an extrovert (active and expressive) and the life of any gathering, because almost everyone loves humor. Make this book a treasured addition to your library and one you will gladly recommend to others. It is my fervent prayer that through this effort I am leaving the wood pile a little higher than I found it. Jesus loves you and so do I! Reverend Wesley Louis Moss, at eighty-one years young, is Associate Minister of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia. Reverend Ken Jelks is senior pastor.

The Trauma Heart by Judy Crane Book Summary:

The majority of people addicted to substances or process addictions such as relationship disorders, eating disorders, self-harming behaviors, gambling or pornography are trauma survivors. Many people caught in the web of addiction don't identify as trauma survivors until their personal, familial, intergenerational, and in-uterine history is exposed. Unfortunately, relapse is inevitable without trauma resolution that can only take place once their history is exposed. It is only when that happens that the behavior disorders will finally make sense. For almost 30 years Judy Crane has worked with clients and families who are in great pain due to destructive and dangerous behaviors. Families often believe that their loved one must be bad or defective, and the one struggling with the addiction not only believes it, too, but feels it to their core. The truth is, the whole family is embroiled in their own individual survival coping mechanisms—the addicted member is often the red flag indicating that the whole family needs healing. In The Trauma Heart, Crane explores the many ways that life's events impact each member of the family. She reveals the essence of trauma and addictions treatment through the stories, art, and assignments of former clients and the staff who worked with them, offering a snapshot of their pain and healing.

The Sober Lush by Amanda Eyre Ward,Jardine Libaire Book Summary:

A sober hedonist's guide to living a decadent, wild, and soulful life--alcohol-free. In a culture where sipping "rosé all day" is seen as the epitome of relaxation, "grabbing a drink" the only way to network; and meeting at a bar the quintessential "first date," many of us are left wondering if drinking alcohol really is the only way to cultivate joy and connection in life. Jardine Libaire and Amanda Eyre Ward wanted to live spontaneous and luxurious lives, to escape the ordinary and enjoy the intoxicating. Their drinking, however, had started to numb them to the present moment instead of unlocking it. Ward was introduced to Libaire when she first got sober. As they became friends, the two women talked about how they yearned to create lives that were Technicolor, beautifully raw, connected, blissed out, and outside the lines . . . but how? In The Sober Lush, Libaire and Ward provide a road map for living a lush and sensual life without booze. This book offers ideas and instruction for such nonalcoholic joys as: • The allure of "the Vanish," in which one disappears early from the party without saying goodbye to a soul, to amble home under the stars • The art of creating zero-proof cocktails for all seasons • Having a fantastic first date while completely sober • A primer on setting up your own backyard beehive, and honey tastings For anyone curious about lowering their alcohol consumption or quitting drinking altogether, or anyone established in sobriety who wants inspiration, this shimmering and sumptuous book will show you how to keep indulging in life even if you stop indulging in alcohol.

In this book, he explores space and time in an adventure with the wonderful natural environment of southern Arabia and its people, heirs to this region’s great civilizations. Reconciliation of Worship in the Black Church by Charles E. Lewis Sr. Book Summary:

One of the foundations of life in the black church is the proliferation of various worship practices and music. Reconciliation of Worship in the Black Church seeks to pave the way to the revitalization and restoration of faith celebration within the black church. There is a need to develop a practical theology of worship, incorporating the two main types used within the black churchtraditional, devotional-style worship, with its focus on spontaneous praise and testimony; and contemporary praise and worship, with its emphasis on rehearsed liturgy. In recent years, the rich history of traditional, spontaneous worship of the black church has been challenged by the praise-and-worship movement. Charles Lewiss insightful look at his own denomination demonstrates the importance of clinging to traditional practices while giving due consideration to modern modes of worship. Lewis sees the issue not as a choice between two competing styles but as a challenge for the church to blend the styles without compromising genuine worship or alienating large segments of the church. Carefully researched and presented from the heart, Reconciliation of Worship in the Black Church hopes to contribute to a lasting unification of worship practices.

The Anatomy of a Calling by Lissa Rankin Book Summary:

We are all, every single one of us, heroes. We are all on what Joseph Campbell calls “a hero’s journey;” we are all on a mission to step into our true nature and fulfill the assignment our souls were sent to Earth to fulfill. Navigating the hero’s journey, Lissa Rankin, MD, argues, is one of the cornerstones of living a meaningful, authentic, healthy life. In clear, engaging prose, Lissa describes her entire spiritual journey for the first time--beginning with what she calls her “perfect storm” of events--and recounts the many transformative experiences that led to a profound awakening of her soul. Through her father’s death, her daughter’s birth, career victories and failures, and an ongoing struggle to identify as both a doctor and a healer, Lissa discovers a powerful self-awareness. As she shares her story, she encourages you to find out where you are on your own journey, offering inspiring guideposts and practices along the way. With compelling lessons on trusting intuition, surrendering to love, and learning to see adversity as an opportunity for soul growth, The Anatomy of a Calling invites you to make a powerful shift in consciousness and reach your highest destiny.

I Found My Tribe by Ruth Fitzmaurice Book Summary:

A transformative, euphoric memoir about finding solace in the unexpected for readers of H is for Hawk, It's Not Yet Dark, and When Breath Becomes Air. Ruth's tribe are her lively children and her filmmaker and author husband Simon Fitzmaurice who has ALS and can only communicate with his eyes. Ruth's other "tribe" are the friends who gather at the cove in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, and regularly throw themselves into the freezing cold water, just for kicks. The Tragic Wives' Swimming Club, as they jokingly call themselves, meet to cope with the extreme challenges life puts in their way, not to mention the monster waves rolling over the horizon. Swimming is just one of the daily coping strategies as Ruth fights to preserve the strong but now silent connection with her husband. As she tells the story of their marriage, from diagnosis to their long-standing precarious situation, Ruth also charts her passion for swimming in the wild Irish Sea--culminating in a midnight swim under the full moon on her wedding anniversary. An invocation to all of us to love as hard as we can, and live even harder, I Found My Tribe is an urgent and uplifting letter to a husband, family, friends, the natural world, and the brightness of life.
