Hard Times in the Marvelous City

Drugs And Democracy In Rio De Janeiro Trafficking Social Networks And Public Security [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Hard Times in the Marvelous City by Bryan McCann Book Summary:

Beginning in the late 1970s, activists from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro challenged the conditions—such as limited access to security, sanitation, public education, and formal employment—that separated favela residents from Rio's other citizens. The activists built a movement that helped to push the nation toward redemocratization. They joined with political allies in an effort to institute an ambitious slate of municipal reforms. Those measures ultimately fell short of aspirations, and soon the reformers were struggling to hold together a fraying coalition. Rio was bankrupted by natural disasters and hyperinflation and ravaged by drug wars. Well-armed drug traffickers had become the new lords of the favelas, protecting their turf through violence and patronage. By the early 1990s, the promise of the favela residents' mobilization of the late 1970s and early 1980s seemed out of reach. Yet the aspirations that fueled that mobilization have endured, and its legacy continues to shape favela politics in Rio de Janeiro.

More Money, More Crime

Drugs And Democracy In Rio De Janeiro Trafficking Social Networks And Public Security [Pdf/ePub] eBook

More Money, More Crime by Marcelo Bergman Book Summary:

While worldwide crime is declining overall, criminality in Latin America has reached unprecedented levels that have ushered in social unrest and political turmoil. Despite major political and economic gains, crime has increased in every Latin American country over the past 25 years, currently making this region the most crime-ridden and violent in the world. Over the past two decades, Latin America has enjoyed economic growth, poverty and inequality reduction, rising consumer demand, and spreading democracy, but it also endured a dramatic outbreak of violence and property crimes. In More Money, More Crime, Marcelo Bergman argues that prosperity enhanced demand for stolen and illicit goods supplied by illegal rackets. Crime surged as weak states and outdated criminal justice systems could not meet the challenge posed by new profitably criminal enterprises. Based on large-scale data sets, including surveys from inmates and victims, Bergman analyzes the development of crime as a business in the region, and the inability-and at times complicity-of state agencies and officers to successfully contain it. While organized crime has grown, Latin American governments have lacked the social vision to promote sustainable upward mobility, and have failed to improve the technical capacities of law enforcement agencies to deter criminality. The weak state responses have only further entrenched the influence of criminal groups making them all the more difficult to dismantle. More Money, More Crime is a sobering study that foresees a continued rise in violence while prosperity increases unless governments develop appropriate responses to crime and promote genuine social inclusion.

New Racial Missions of Policing

Drugs And Democracy In Rio De Janeiro Trafficking Social Networks And Public Security [Pdf/ePub] eBook

New Racial Missions of Policing by Paul Amar Book Summary:

This book identifies new formations of race, racism and ethnicity at the intersection of neoliberalism, security, urban governance and the law through a comparative, international analysis of police organizations and practices. It pushes analytical and theoretical boundaries by examining racialization and ethnicization in locations where the topic is politically taboo, such as in China, India and France, and where racial and ethnic hierarchies have supposedly been banished to the past, as in Bosnia and South Africa. This book also examines police and security services not as mere artefacts of state authority or the prerogatives of capitalist development, but as relatively autonomous and uniquely productive intersections of new kinds of state, social and cultural formations that are remaking race, embodiment, fear and control on their own terms. This book was published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

In War, Those who Die are Not Innocent ('Na Guerra, Quem Morre Não É Innocente')

Drugs And Democracy In Rio De Janeiro Trafficking Social Networks And Public Security [Pdf/ePub] eBook

In War, Those who Die are Not Innocent ('Na Guerra, Quem Morre Não É Innocente') by Saima Husain Book Summary:

This book concerns itself with the implementation of human rights strategies within the state police forces of Rio de Janeiro as an attempt to improve policing and enhance police compliance with human rights standards. For the sake of this research, police human rights strategies have been defined as those laws, policies, projects, or programs that implicitly or explicitly aim to improve police compliance with human rights values, standards, and norms. The understanding that as state agents the police are supposed to uphold the law, which includes human rights, yet they are often involved in human rights violations has led to a realization of the importance of implementing human rights within the police and increasing police compliance with human rights standards. It is not enough to document human rights violations committed by the police and to demand that these officers be held accountable, there has to be an attempt to get police officers to understand human rights and to respect people's human rights while performing their duties so that human rights violations at the hands of the police occur less frequently. What strategies have been created to improve the police and increase police compliance with human rights standards? How have these strategies been implemented? How do they influence the reality of policing? What are the societal and institutional factors that facilitate or impede the implementation of these strategies? It is these questions and the lack of answers available thereto that inspired this research.

Drugs And Democracy In Rio De Janeiro Trafficking Social Networks And Public Security [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Building Urban Safety Through Slum Upgrading by United Nations Human Settlements Programme Book Summary:

"Excluded from the city's opportunities, physically, politically and economically marginalized, slum dwellers are particularly vulnerable to crime and violence. They face an acute risk of becoming victims or offenders and live in a state of constant insecurity. Only a few cities have incorporated a coherent component to prevent crime and mitigate violence in their urban development agendas. Impact on urban safety has occurred somewhat unexpectedly. That is the main lesson to be drawn from the pages of this book: urban policy integration."--pub. desc.

Ideologies of Marginality in Brazilian Hip Hop

Drugs And Democracy In Rio De Janeiro Trafficking Social Networks And Public Security [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Ideologies of Marginality in Brazilian Hip Hop by Derek Pardue Book Summary:

In the land of samba there is another vibrant culture capturing the attention of urban youth. This compelling account argues that hip hop, while certainly a product of globalized flows of information and technology, is by no means homogenous. Using more than five years of anthropological fieldwork in São Paulo, Brazil's largest city, Pardue represents "culture" as generative and thus meaningful as a set of practices. When interpreted in this manner, local hip hoppers become closer to what they claim to be--subjects rather than objects of history and everyday life. In his ethnography, the first in English to look at Brazilian hip hop, Pardue highlights the analytical categories of race, class, gender, and territory.
