The Age of Big Business by , Book Summary:

Writing in the early part of the 20th century, author Burton Hendrick noted that his father and grandfather probably wouldn't understand his business vocabulary. The terms "trust," "subsidiaries," and "syndicates" simply meant nothing to earlier generations. But they are important to the remarkable development of the post-Civil War American economy and industry, the topic of The Age of Big Business. As Hendrick noted, "The industrial story of the United States in the last fifty years is the story of the most amazing economic transformation that the world has ever known." To understand this period, Hendricks looks at the lives of the captains of industry, but most closely at the career of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who Hendricks believes best personifies this period. Hendricks also discusses the steel industry, the spread of the telephone, public utilities, agricultural machinery, and the democratization of the automobile. BURTON JESSE HENDRICK (1870-1949) was a respected American author and historian. He won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for biography for Life and Letters of Walter H. Page, and The Victory at Sea, which he co-wrote with Admiral William S. Sims, and won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 1921. The Training of an American earned him a third Pulitzer in 1929. Hendrick also wrote Bulwark of the Republic, Statesmen of the Lost Cause, and Lincoln's War Cabinet.

It has enormous value in asserting the importance of personal growth as the foundation for professional development' - Times Education Supplement `This book will undoubtedly help school leaders and potential leaders acquire a basic understanding of the essential elements in understanding themselves and others in the professional context' - Times Educational Supplement There are many books about professional development for leaders in schools and teachers, particularly in the context of performance management. Though this book takes account of these, the focus is initially very much on personal development through self-understanding and self-management, because this has to be the basis for profound professional development. This book provides an alternative approach to personal and professional leadership development. For the first time this wide range of topics has been covered in a book on educational leadership. Practical activities are included to encourage the learning process. The first part of the book looks at the individual and the personal learning, development of emotional intelligence and modeling excellence which provide the basis for professional development. In the middle chapters the author focuses on the interpersonal and team development processes such as career management, coaching and decision making. The concluding chapters explore issues at the school level but always concentrating on the individual leadership development required. These include major current concerns such as knowledge management, the learning organization and the work-life balance. The author reaches out to include evidence from beyond the world of schools and education in order to enhance understanding. This book provides an in-depth resource and a learning opportunity for all those concerned with educational leadership.

Public Asset Management Companies by Caroline Cerruti,Ruth Neyens Book Summary:

This toolkit is designed for policy makers and stakeholders who are considering the establishment of a publicly funded asset management company (AMC). An AMC is a statutory body or corporation, fully or partially owned by the government, usually established in times of financial sector stress, to assume the management of distressed assets and recoup the public cost of resolving the crisis. AMCs were first used in the early 1990s in Sweden (Securum) and the United States (the RTC), and again during the Asian crisis (for instance, Danaharta in Malaysia, KAMCO in the Republic of Korea). The 2008 financial crisis marked a renewal of the use of this tool to support the resolution of financial crises (for instance, NAMA in Ireland, SAREB in Spain). The toolkit does not address broader bank resolution issues. It has a narrow focus on the specific tool of a public AMC established to support bank resolution, and with the objective of providing insight on the design and operational issues surrounding the creation of such AMCs. It seeks to inform policy makers on issues to consider if and when planning to establish a public AMC through: · An analysis of recent public AMCs established as a result of the global financial crisis · Detailed case studies in developed and emerging markets over three generations · A toolkit approach with questions and answers, including questions on design and operations that are critical for authorities confronted with the issue of whether to establish an AMC · An emphasis on “how to†? that is, a practical versus a principled approach. The toolkit is structured as followed: Part I summarizes the findings on the preconditions, the design, and the operationalization of public AMCs. Part II provides case studies on three generations of AMCs, whose lessons are embedded in Part I. The case studies cover emerging and developed markets, and have been selected based on the lessons they offer.

Hog Manure Management, the Environment and Human Health by Tiffany T.Y. Guan,Richard A. Holley Book Summary:

This volume provides a current look at how development of intensive live stock production, particularly hogs, has affected human health with respect to zoonotic diseases primarily transmitted by food but also by water, air and oc cupational activity. While information presented focuses on the development of increasing livestock production in Canada, examples are given and compar isons are made with other countries (Denmark, Taiwan, the Netherlands and the United States) where the levels of livestock production are much more intense and where the industry is more mature. Canada is also searching for solutions to enable handling the growing volume of its livestock waste properly. Lessons learned from the experience of those who have gone before are invaluable and are drawn together in this volume to serve as useful guidance for others in plot ting the courses of action possible to avoid serious environmental setbacks and negative human health effects through foodborne illness. A significant portion of the text is devoted to a discussion of enteric illness in humans caused by zoonotic pathogens. The second chapter deals with sur vival of pathogens (which cause foodborne illness) in manure environments. An evaluation of the human health hazard likely to occur from the use of ma nure as fertilizer is important because of the recent trend toward an increase in foodborne illness from the consumption of minimally processed fruits and vegetables that may have been fertilized with animal-derived organic materials.

Situational Project Management by Oliver F. Lehmann Book Summary:

Most project managers would agree that every project is unique. But not all project managers would agree that the best way to manage a unique project is unique. Many still cling to the old practice of having a methodology that is applied to all projects. "One size fits all" is still in common use, and this approach has proven to lead to project failure. Flexibility, situational intelligence, and creativity are essential to deliver project success. The need to recognize and master ever-changing requirements and environmental conditions is a tough challenge for professional project managers. The same practices that led to success yesterday may cause failure today. Selecting favorable responses to a given situation is often the most critical factor of the dynamics of success and failure. This book is designed to help project professionals assess a situation, predict the appropriate approach, methodology and achieving styles, and then apply them in a situational fashion. To guide project managers in selecting the appropriate responses, Situational Project Management (SitPM) shows how to assess a given project, determine its unique characteristics, and select the appropriate methods to complete the project. With this book, projects managers can use SitPM to develop profiles of their projects on the basis of the projects’ physical characteristics, the project teams’ behavioral characteristics, the enterprise environment, and the market environments receiving project deliverables. These profiles help project managers to determine the appropriate project life cycle approach and leadership style. The book also explores various ways to engage stakeholders on the basis of a project’s SitPM profile. The book’s author, Oliver F. Lehmann, has developed a set of templates to apply SitPM in practice. It can be downloaded from www.oliverlehmann.com/SitPM/Templates.zip.
