Dolly's War

Dolly's War [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Dolly's War by Dorothy Scannell Book Summary:

On a narrow wooden armchair-bed was lying our hostess. Her nightdress was up round her neck. The organist, on his knees, in the nude, was deep in prayer, his face bent in reverence over his bride’s prostrate form. Ever so slowly the organist raised his horrified eyes to ours. My sister, extremely slow to take in the delicacy of any situation, murmured, half to herself, ‘That’s funny, I could have sworn he was clean-shaven.’ Dolly Scannell, author of East End classic memoir Mother Knew Best, has now established her home front, wife to the embattled Chas, and proud keeper of her own house. Life is still full of small but piquant joys, sorrows and bizarre happenstances - like Dolly’s need to take her household rubbish back to her mother for fear of her new landlord. Before long she’s a mum as well, but then comes the war and her cheerful wit and unquenchable spirit are needed more than ever. Gas masks, ration books, GI’s (over-sexed, etc), a chaotic Jewish wedding, husband Chas in the Army, while Dolly takes on his insurance selling door-to-door, encounters a murderous landlady and spends time evacuated from her beloved London to Wales and Suffolk - before being restored to her beloved and enormous family, her mother still matriach of all. A treasure, recalled and retold by the author at her inimitable best! ‘The author of Mother Knew Best in hilarious vein’ Yorkshire Post ‘You have to laugh with Dolly Scannell. Somehow that Cockney flow of funny tales shakes you up into laughter’ Evening Standard

Shadows of the Gunmen

Dolly's War [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Shadows of the Gunmen by Danine Farquharson,Sean Farrell Book Summary:

The first interdisciplinary study of violence and the modern Irish experience, Shadows of the Gunmen contributes to both Irish studies and the broader examination of violence in the modern world. Providing both examples of and an introduction to recent scholarship that addresses the representations of violence, Shadows of the Gunmen probes the connections between political/historical violence and aesthetic representations thereof. Scholars have long understood the key roles played by violence in the making of modern Ireland. In recent years, studies on violence have become increasingly creative and sophisticated, as scholars have used new analytical lenses to confront the real challenges faced in "writing violence." Much of the best work in this new literature examines the complex relationships between violence and its representation. Shadows of the Gunmen provides a coherent introduction to the latest scholarship. With essays from historians, film scholars, literary critics, and philosophers, Shadows of the Gunmen is both relevant to the particular Irish experience and the broader contemporary world. Violence may not speak, but violence is represented and these depictions are continually interrogated and/or contested in public and private arenas across Ireland and abroad. This volume of essays will explore and probe the connection between political/historical violence and aesthetic representations of such violence. The first interdisciplinary study of violence and the modern Irish experience, Shadows of the Gunmen is a major contribution to both Irish studies and the broader examination of violence in the modern world.

Dolly West's Kitchen

Dolly's War [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Dolly West's Kitchen by Frank McGuinness Book Summary:

Two volumes from the Irish playwright Frank McGuinness: a major play on love, family, and war as well as stunning translations of two classics Set in Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland, during World War II, Dolly West's Kitchen is centered on a family struggling to come to terms not only with the effects of war on their country and their family but also with their own inability to respond to one another as situations -- and they themselves -- change. As the characters talk of love, sex, war, the English, de Valera, and the Yanks, Dolly West's Kitchen becomes a deeply moving evocation of the fantasy and the reality that was Ireland in the 1940s, filled with the richness of character and sense of place that have always marked Frank McGuinness's writing. A Woman's Wartime Journal

Dolly's War [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Woman's Wartime Journal by Dolly Sumner Lunt Book Summary:

Dolly Sumner Lunt begins her diary, A Woman's Wartime Journal, published in 1918, by recalling her anxiety about the approach of General Sherman's Union army on January 1, 1864. While she worries about the arrival of Sherman's troops and their habit of pillaging and burning everything in their path, she records stories of visits by local raiders posing as U.S. soldiers and the sleepless nights she has spent watching fires on the horizon. Despite Lunt's efforts to hide her valuable possessions, which include sending her mules into the woods, dividing her stores of meat among the slaves, and burying the silver, the passing Union troops raid her house and plantation and take her slaves with them. They also set fire to cotton bales in her barn, but the blaze burns out before spreading, largely sparing Lunt's property the widespread destruction suffered by neighboring plantations. In her last entries, dated December 1865, Lunt writes optimistically about the recovery of her farm, her new sharecropping system, and the first cheerful Christmas in years. A DOCSOUTH BOOK.
