The Conjure Woman, and Other Conjure Tales

Dances On The Plains Mandele Achebe Angelou And Other Poems [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Conjure Woman, and Other Conjure Tales by Charles Waddell Chesnutt Book Summary:

The stories in The Conjure Woman were Charles W. Chesnutt's first great literary success, and since their initial publication in 1899 they have come to be seen as some of the most remarkable works of African American literature from the Emancipation through the Harlem Renaissance. Lesser known, though, is that the The Conjure Woman, as first published by Houghton Mifflin, was not wholly Chesnutt's creation but a work shaped and selected by his editors. This edition reassembles for the first time all of Chesnutt's work in the conjure tale genre, the entire imaginative feat of which the published Conjure Woman forms a part. It allows the reader to see how the original volume was created, how an African American author negotiated with the tastes of the dominant literary culture of the late nineteenth century, and how that culture both promoted and delimited his work. In the tradition of Uncle Remus, the conjure tale listens in on a poor black southerner, speaking strong dialect, as he recounts a local incident to a transplanted northerner for the northerner's enlightenment and edification. But in Chesnutt's hands the tradition is transformed. No longer a reactionary flight of nostalgia for the antebellum South, the stories in this book celebrate and at the same time question the folk culture they so pungently portray, and ultimately convey the pleasures and anxieties of a world in transition. Written in the late nineteenth century, a time of enormous growth and change for a country only recently reunited in peace, these stories act as the uneasy meeting ground for the culture of northern capitalism, professionalism, and Christianity and the underdeveloped southern economy, a kind of colonial Third World whose power is manifest in life charms, magic spells, and ha'nts, all embodied by the ruling figure of the conjure woman. Humorous, heart-breaking, lyrical, and wise, these stories make clear why the fiction of Charles W. Chesnutt has continued to captivate audiences for a century.

Lost Voices of Egypt

Dances On The Plains Mandele Achebe Angelou And Other Poems [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Lost Voices of Egypt by Mfon Edie Book Summary:

By offering some insights into a key area of West Africa, this book attempts to take the wonders of Ancient Egypt out of the realm of myths and folklore. The credit for the longevity of Ancient Egyptian traditions belongs to their erstwhile scribes, who managed to keep extensive records of Egypt’s history and achievements over an exceptionally long period. The Anang, Efik, and Ibibio people also deserve recognition for maintaining a spoken language that has notchanged very much from that spoken by the Ancient Egyptians at the various stages of their development, and for perpetuating a very unique culture that allows for the uncomplicated linkage of these two worlds. Bystudying this ancient language and culture, we can pose some formidable questions about our present—questions that shape our understanding ofthe genesis of the three main Middle Eastern religious movements, and that help explain the evolution of modern science. The fact that other venerated civilizations, including the Semites, Persians, and Greeks, represented “Egyptian” words inaccurately does not warrant perpetuating such corruption, as this would rob those words of their true essence. Much as the corrupted “English” words Ikobi, inokobi would not sound familiar to an English-speaker as the words “To be, or not to be,” neither do “words” like miri, kem, or osiris represent the Ancient Egyptian muara, ekim, and ase, respectively....... Page 56, “re men kimi” - In Efik, these corrupted words should read as uyo mön ekim, meaning “black voices” (voices of those who are black). Up until the earlier period of the present-day Copts, Egyptians referred to themselves as such: mön ekim. In a similar vein, the present-day speakers of this language—including the Efik, Ibibio, Anang, Örön, Etinan, Uyo, Nsit, Ibunö, Itu, Iköt Abasi, Öföt, Ediene, Eket, Abak, Iköt Aran, Iköt Ubö, Oku, Itam, Muaña (iba)—are described in similar fashion, i.e., “mön so-and-so.” In this case, mön is used in a generic manner as opposed to nuñ, which has particular relevance to family or ancestors.

Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line

Dances On The Plains Mandele Achebe Angelou And Other Poems [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line by Charles W. Chesnutt Book Summary:

Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932) was an author, essayist and political activist whose works addressed the complex issues of racial and social identity at the turn of the century. Chesnutt's early works explored political issues somewhat indirectly, with the intention of changing the attitudes of Caucasians slowly and carefully. His characters deal with difficult issues of miscegenation, illegitimacy, racial identity and social place. They also expose the anguish of mix-race men and women and the consequences of racial hatred, mob violence, and moral compromise. "Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line" is a collection of eighteen short stories that have a deep moral purpose mixed with elements of magic and conjuring. Included in this collection is Chesnutt's first published short story, "The Goophered Grapevine." It is set in "Patesville" (Fayetteville), North Carolina and is a story within a story in which each story is told by a different narrator. Also in this collection among many others is "The Conjurer's Revenge" that depicts Uncle Julius duping John into buying an old, useless horse.

Serengeti Songs

Dances On The Plains Mandele Achebe Angelou And Other Poems [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Serengeti Songs by Chris McCully Book Summary:

In Serengeti Songs Chris McCully plays poet-guide on a safari through East Africa’s abundant wild landscape. Dik-dik, topi, elephant and impala roam these pages, darting between the acacia’s ‘burnt star-dome’ and the baobab’s myth-rich shade. The poems conjure a Serengeti both glorious and savage, its light ‘stained with blood’, its marshlands steeped in ‘murderous silence’. But McCully’s writing is formally playful and diverse, the collection a safari in itself; accompanying photographs and taxonomic endnotes riff on the guidebook form. The poems also play with gazes: they inspect not only wildlife but also the human need to inspect. Wealthy interlopers demand to see the lions ‘do what they do on TV’, yet ‘know nothing of how the river-pool devours starlight’. The collection’s post-colonial alertness, however, does not compromise the core of wonder hinted at by its title: McCully’s songs are awe-struck celebrations of a unique and delicate landscape. They are, too, protest songs, swansongs: they bear witness, even at their most rhapsodic, to the threat of extinction resulting from human zeal. ‘How many dawns have the great herds run the rim of the world?’ he asks. These poems engage with the Serengeti’s complex symbolism, an emblem both of bounty and scarcity, wonder and loss.

When This Silence Shall Speak

Dances On The Plains Mandele Achebe Angelou And Other Poems [Pdf/ePub] eBook

When This Silence Shall Speak by Akemfua Festus Book Summary:

Most of the poems in When This Silence Shall Speak were written between 1998 and 2005, corresponding to the authors last years in university and the period of his professional accountancy studies. The country was undergoing severe economic crises, exacerbated by pervasive corruption, patronage and nepotism, waste, social decay, elections rigging, and disrespect for state authority. Unemployment was at its peak, with young people seeking to move abroad by whatever means possible. It is against this backdrop that the author sought through poetry not only to draw the attention of his fellow countrymen to the negative consequences of such ills in societyespecially on the poorer and vulnerable classes, with whom he identifiesbut to also carefully relate and transmit the spirit of his time to a generation that may be blessed to live in a better time. The poems in this volume are carefully selected to vividly portray the moods, events, experiences, frustrations, and aspirations of his people. Though written over a decade ago, they remain as relevant today as they were in the yesteryears.

Beginning with a tale from the Arabian Nights, this theme unfolds in legends from Irish paganism, medieval Christianity, the Arthurian cycle, and early Hinduism. In the retelling of these tales, Zimmer discloses the meanings within their seemingly unrelated symbols and suggests the philosophical wholeness of this assortment of myth. Copyright © Libri GmbH.
