How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow by Monica Sweeney Book Summary:

The Sun and the Clouds are best friends. Together they keep the world warm, the gardens growing, and the sky full of beautiful rainbows. But one day they get into a fight and refuse to be in the sky together. And that means there are no longer any rainbows. Without rainbows, the colors start disappearing until Earth was left with no color … except for one little forgotten box of crayons in one little school desk. Determined to save the rainbows and fix the Sun and Clouds’ friendship, the crayons draw rainbows all over town. Their attempts go unnoticed. Soon they realize that they’re going to have to do something big to get the attention of the former friends. So, the crayons create the biggest rainbow they can and hope it’s enough to bring color back to the world. How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow teaches the importance of teamwork and perseverance through seven crayons with unique personalities and their desire to see the world in color. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography, 2nd Edition by Glenn Randall Book Summary:

The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography, 2nd Edition teaches photographers how to convert their visual peak experiences—moments of extraordinary natural beauty that evoke a sense of wonder and awe—into stunning images that elicit the same awestruck emotion in their viewers. Author Glenn Randall is an experienced wilderness photographer, and whether you want to venture into the mountains for once-in-a-lifetime shots of raw nature, or simply hone your landscape photography skills from the safety of your back deck, Randall explains the art, science and craft behind creating stunning landscape photographs.

This fully updated edition of the best-selling first edition includes nearly all new imagery throughout the book, as well as a new first chapter, "Photographic Essentials," to help beginners to landscape photography get up to speed quickly. Additionally, this second edition takes into account how Randall's techniques have changed and evolved since the first edition published—from photographic practices to how he uses smart phones and apps as important and powerful tools for landscape photography.

After discussing photographic essentials, Randall focuses on the art of landscape photography. He describes his three-step process for composing a photograph and shows how good composition is an organic process that begins with rules but ultimately transcends them. Randall then explores the science behind successful landscape photographs, which requires understanding key concepts from geography, optics, vision, and psychology. These concepts include:

    • How the position of the sun at sunrise and sunset varies throughout the year. This will help you plan when and where to shoot.
    • Using optics to predict where rainbows will appear, how polarizers will interact with reflections, and where to find spectacular light.
    • How to use topographic maps and computerized mapping tools to help you find promising shooting locations in the wilderness.
    • Calculating exposures, achieving correct exposure in high-contrast lighting situations, and the best digital darkroom techniques.

With some practice and by applying the techniques that Randall teaches you, you will soon be ready to master the finer nuances of creating magnificent landscape photographs.

Old Jack by William Henry Giles Kingston Book Summary:

Of course youÕve heard of Donnybrook Fair, close to the city of Dublin. What a strange scene it was, to be sure, of uproar and wild confusionÑof quarrelling and fighting from beginning to endÑof broken heads, of black eyes, and bruised shinsÑof shouting, of shrieking and swearingÑof blasphemy and drunkenness in all its forms of brutality. Ay, and as IÕve heard say, of many a deed of darkness, not omitting murder, and other crimes not less foul and hateful to Him who made this beautiful world, and gave to man a religion of love and purity. There the rollicking, roaring, bullying, fighting, harum-scarum Irishman of olden days had full swing for all the propensities and vile passions which have ruined him at home, and gained him a name and a fame not to be envied throughout the world. Often have I wondered whether, had a North American Indian, or a South-Sea Islander, visited the place, he could have been persuaded that he had come to a land of Christian men. Certainly an angel from heaven would have looked upon the assemblage as a multitude of SatanÕs imps let loose upon the world. They tell me that the fair and its bedevilments have pretty well been knocked on the head. I am glad of it, though I have never again been to the spot from the day of which I am about to speak.

The Rainbow Upopo by Daniel Cheng Book Summary:

The tranquility of the quiet community of Kabashiro was shattered when North Korean ballistic test missiles soared over its skies, sending residents of the small seaside town scrambling for cover. The excitement had barely died down after the all-clear signal when a pod of whales beach themselves on its shores. The indigenous Ainu inhabitants of the town saw all these as signs of the gods’ displeasure and when graves of their ancestors were disturbed, Ryohei feared the worst. But Kabashiro’s charismatic mayor has every reason to be optimistic; after all, he just pulled off a deal for a multi-billion dollar investment which promises thousands of jobs and the biggest ever economic windfall for the town. The Peridot Hokkaido Resort will be a feather in the cap for the prefecture’s young governor who some say may be Prime Minister of Japan one day. The tiny Ainu fraternity are less than enthusiastic though, as they’ve seen too many opportunities pass them by and their people continue to be left behind economically as they town prospered. Michiru is one young, bright hope for the Ainu People but her heart is set on leaving Kabashiro and her accursed Ainu heritage. Haru supports his sister’s ambitions for Tokyo but his affinity is to the land of their forefathers although he is unlikely to follow in the long line of the family’s artisanal fishing livelihood. Everything changed when it was discovered that the new resort will be built on sacred ancestral Ainu land which the government had previously pledged to return to the Ainu People. The feted American investor, Peridot Resorts LLC, and their local business partner, Toyodai, became pariahs overnight but the governor is determined to push through with development as the financial and political stakes are too high. The battle lines are drawn up where the minnow Ainus looked doomed to lose until the most unexpected saviour rose among their ranks. Aided by the invisible hands of unseen actors, the Ainus head for a showdown with the powers that be, but there may be more that meets the eye and it is unclear who’s friend and who’s foe. A quirky professor hailing from Virginia could unwittingly bring a beacon of hope for the Ainus as the wrath of the gods descend upon the town. With the eyes of the world focused on Kabashiro, deliverance is out of the Ainus’ own hands as the escalating events spirals towards a climatic end.

Voices of the Rainbow by Kenneth Rosen Book Summary:

Kenneth Rosen’s haunting volume of poetry proves that the powerful and moving voice of Native Americans must be heard. More than two hundred poems embrace anguish, pride, and hope, representing twenty-four tribal affiliations, including, Sioux, Pawnee, Choctaw, Seminole, Laguna Pueblo, Cherokee, Anishinabe, Mohawk, Seneca, and Seminole. An Indian leader once asked a U.S. president: “What visions, under the white man’s way, are offered that will cause today’s children to want tomorrow to come?” In a sense, each poem in this volume is an attempt to confront and answer that very question.

The End of the Rainbow by Susan Engel Book Summary:

Amid the hype of Race to the Top, online experiments such as Khan Academy, and bestselling books like The Sandbox Investment, we seem to have drawn a line that leads from nursery school along a purely economic route, with money as the final stop. But what price do we all pay for the increasingly singular focus on wage as the outcome of education? Susan Engel, a leading psychologist and educator, argues that this economic framework has had a profound impact not only on the way we think about education but also on what happens inside school buildings. The End of the Rainbow asks what would happen if we changed the implicit goal of education and imagines how different things would be if we made happiness, rather than money, the graduation prize. Drawing on psychology, education theory, and a broad range of classroom experiences across the country, Engel offers a fascinating alternative view of what education might become: teaching children to read books for pleasure and self-expansion and encouraging collaboration. All of these new skills, she argues, would not only cultivate future success in the world of work but also would make society as a whole a better, happier place. Accessible to parents and teachers alike, The End of the Rainbow will be the beginning of a new, more vibrant public conversation about what the future of American education should look like.
