Chill Factor

Chill Factor [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Chill Factor by David Paitson,Craig Merz Book Summary:

Learn how a minor-league hockey team helped bring the NHL to Columbus, Ohio. The city of Columbus, Ohio, had always struggled to support any professional sports franchise. It’s a town where Ohio State University reigns supreme, and everything else is less important. That was until 1991, when the Columbus Chill, a minor-league hockey franchise, arrived. Using Veeckian marketing tactics and on-ice shenanigans, the Chill became the talk of the city and gained a religious local fan base. Based on the success of the Chill, from 1991–99, the city of Columbus was awarded with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2000, the city’s own NHL franchise. Chill Factor follows the wild ride through the eyes of team president and general manager David Paitson, from the early formation of the minor-league franchise through the decision to rattle the status quo by going to the edge and beyond with a marketing and promotional plan that was both edgy and controversial. The success of the Chill after their first season gave the organization the impetus to challenge local civic and business leaders to build a world-class arena and emerge from the shadow of OSU. There were setbacks and triumphs on and off the ice, and eventually the realization that the Columbus of today would not be possible without the aid of the Chill. Chill Factor takes readers into the front office and onto the rink, giving every angle of how a small town was able to get behind a working-class team that fought both on and off the ice. This thrilling account will appeal to those who remember the Chill’s reign, as well as those who enjoy seeing the underdog climb the ladder to sports supremacy. Evening Twilight: a Woman’S Village Journal, 2007-2011

Chill Factor [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Evening Twilight: a Woman’S Village Journal, 2007-2011 by Mary Kelly Black Book Summary:

This book is the third volume of journal selections (2007-2011). Volume I included an Introduction and some biographical memories. As with the previous two volumes, the major events of life claim little diaristic attention, the overlooked or insignificant habitually capturing the author’s attention. Most journals or notebooks of eminent writers conclude with their relative youth, when they pick up the pen to create an imaginative retrospective journey, so there is little available of aging journal-keepers describing the downward journey. Those who maintained journals intime, or other forms of introspective writing, were rarely long lived, so there is little available of the aging journal-keeper describing the downward journey. Added to this is the paucity of proximal contemporaries who share or admit to the narrowing path, seeking instead the rejuvenations of youth. “I unavoidably focus on the early twilight of this narrowing journey, lead me where it shall.” Those interested in a more event-filled diary will find scant reportage in these pages.

The Untrained Environmentalist: How an Australian Grazier Brought His Barren Property Back to Life (Large Print 16pt) by John Fenton Book Summary:

Fifty years ago a young farmer named John Fenton took over his family's run-down sheep property in Victoria. Named Lanark, the property was barren, windswept and environmentally all but dead. Fenton set about bringing the property back to life by bringing the environment back to life. He planted trees. He reinstated wetlands. He created wildlife reserves. Other farmers thought he had gone a little mad, but Fenton pressed on. As time went on, he came to realise he had stumbled on something extremely important for the Australian landscape as a whole: an integrated, sustainable farming system that was in tune with nature. Thus, he became an environmentalist almost by chance. Year after year, the tree-planting continued. By the time Fenton handed over the property to his son a few years ago, he had planted close to 100,000 trees. He had turned a desolate, degraded farm into an oasis teeming with bird life. In this book he tells the inspiring story of how his miracle was achieved.

Arctic Underwater Operations

Chill Factor [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Arctic Underwater Operations by Louis Rey Book Summary:

Opening Speech of the ICEDIVE 84 Conference by His Royal Highness Prince Bertil of Sweden I am very pleased to be invited to open the International Conference ICEDIVE 84, dealing with medical and technical problems of diving and related underwater activities in arctic conditions. Until recent times, the arctic was considered astrange and remote area of minor importance. However, in a world with diminishing natural resources, arctic areas have become a region of global importance because of their enormous resources and strategie position. Certain experts believe that more than 50% of oil reserves are "sleeping" in these northern areas which are cold, harsh and hostile to man. Operations in arctic areas are extremely difficult, expensive, and demand high levels of technical, scientific and physiological achievement. One should recall for example, that Alaskan oil investment onIy became economically viable after the 1973-1974 price explosion. Recent political/military troubles in the Gulf have increased interest in the development of polar resources. This conference is unique as it is the first time that medical and technical specialists interested in the problem of diving in arctic conditions have met in an international forum. Development of the arctic resources is a matter of international urgency, and it pleases me that scientists from the USA, Canada, the USSR, Australia and Europe have gathered here in Stockholm to present their experience and to discuss problems in this field.

Climate, climate change, climate fluctuations and climatic trends are only a few of the terms used today, in not only conferences, scientific symposia and workshops, but also parliaments and in discussions throughout society. climatologists these terms may be well known; to the vast majority of people, however, they are new, and they require definition and explanation. By 1929 the had set up a Commission for Climatology to deal with matters related to climate studies. When, in 1950, the World Meteorological Organization assumed the mantle of the it retained the commission which, among other responsibilities, had already recognized the need for the definition and explanation of terms used in climatology. It must also be said that much of what we now know about climate derives from the scientific and technical programmes - ordinated by and now, to a much greater extent, by In 1979, the First World Climate Conference made an assessment of the status of knowledge of climate and climate variability, and recommended the establishment of a World Climate Programme.

Ecosystem Management

Chill Factor [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Ecosystem Management by Gary Meffe,Larry Nielsen,Richard L. Knight,Dennis Schenborn Book Summary:

Today's natural resource managers must be able to navigate among the complicated interactions and conflicting interests of diverse stakeholders and decisionmakers. Technical and scientific knowledge, though necessary, are not sufficient. Science is merely one component in a multifaceted world of decision making. And while the demands of resource management have changed greatly, natural resource education and textbooks have not. Until now. Ecosystem Management represents a different kind of textbook for a different kind of course. It offers a new and exciting approach that engages students in active problem solving by using detailed landscape scenarios that reflect the complex issues and conflicting interests that face today's resource managers and scientists. Focusing on the application of the sciences of ecology and conservation biology to real-world concerns, it emphasizes the intricate ecological, socioeconomic, and institutional matrix in which natural resource management functions, and illustrates how to be more effective in that challenging arena. Each chapter is rich with exercises to help facilitate problem-based learning. The main text is supplemented by boxes and figures that provide examples, perspectives, definitions, summaries, and learning tools, along with a variety of essays written by practitioners with on-the-ground experience in applying the principles of ecosystem management. Accompanying the textbook is an instructor's manual that provides a detailed overview of the book and specific guidance on designing a course around it. Ecosystem Management grew out of a training course developed and presented by the authors for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at its National Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. In 20 offerings to more than 600 natural resource professionals, the authors learned a great deal about what is needed to function successfully as a professional resource manager. The book offers important insights and a unique perspective dervied from that invaluable experience.

Rubbing Cold-Black

Chill Factor [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Rubbing Cold-Black by C. Wilson Book Summary:

I was chronicling the transformation of a lost man who traveled down a hostile road without a map.Meet Lyle Brooks-confident, intensely private, and squeaky clean. Lyle's entire existence is never out of his control. But shortly after 9/11, something happens that makes him a bit more like the rest of us. On his way to visit his mother, Lyle is at the airport when he is subjected to a humiliating search. Disgraced in more ways than one, Lyle boards the next flight to Tacoma to visit his mother and tries to put the experience behind him. But it's not that simple. Lyle tells the story to his only confidant, Eryka Koslow, and wants her to write about the incident. During the process of complying with Lyle's request, Eryka comes to appreciate why he wants her to write his profoundly personal account. Lyle's journey to find peace within himself not only inspires Eryka, but also reshapes her own life. But it is Lyle who is truly transformed, emerging from the experience with a new lease on life. Life very rarely holds true to our childhood dreams and as we experience the world and all the good and bad it has to offer, we will undoubtedly only remain grounded if we have our roots planted deep into sound spiritual soil, able to feed off what we can't see but what is keeping us stable and planted firm. "This story touches life's ups and downs and unwanted experiences, yet it brings us back to the soil we're rooted in."-Dori L. Brown/Sister-in-Christ, San Antonio, Texas "Rubbing Cold-Black is a suspenseful journey that will keep you hanging on every word. This book takes us through daily life experiences that we can all relate to, and the ending leaves us searching our souls. It provides a tender way of healing a tough hurt. The author C.E. Wilson gently escorts the reader through a journey turning tragedy into triumph. If you desire to get revitalized, restored and re-focused toward purpose, then this book is a must read."-Cheryl Thompson, Author/Publisher "This is an incredible tale of the spiritual transformation of a man who thought he had it all together. Living off the prayers of his mother, Lyle finally had to make his own decision about Christ. Readers may come to the same life changing revelation at the end of this book."-Linda F. Howelton, M.D.

The Mind and the Brain

Chill Factor [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Mind and the Brain by J.H. Ornstein Book Summary:

2 no predictions or experimental findings based on the Identity Theory differ from those based on mind-brain Parallelism or Epiphenomenal ism, i.e., Dualism in general. The Identity Theory, therefore, must stand or fall on its reputed conceptual advantages over Dualism. Then the conceptual issues at stake in the mind-brain problem are discussed. The kernel of truth present in the Identity Theory is shown to be obscured by all the talk about reducing sensations to neural processes. An attempt is made to characterize pain adequately as a pattern or complex of bodily processes. This view is then reconciled with the asymmetry in the way one is aware of one's own pains and the way in which others are. This asymmetry constitutes an epistemological dualism which no philosophical theory or scientific experiment could alter. The sense in which experiences are both mental and physical is thus elucidated. A Multi-Aspect Theory of the mind is presented and defended. Five aspects of pain are discussed in some detail: experiential, neural, bodily, behavioral and verbal. Having a mind characteristically involves having all of these features except the bodily (i.e., a physical irregularity). Thus having a mind characteristically entails having experiences and a healthy, functioning brain. It also involves being able to act and speak reasonably intelligently.
