Blood Over Black Creek

Blood Over Black Creek [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Blood Over Black Creek by Edwin Derek Book Summary:

Only 20,000 acres in size Black Creek was by Texas standards, a small ranch but it had water in abundance. Its massive and powerful neighbour, the Bar T ranch claimed almost 400,000 acres of land but in summer its ranges usually ran dry. So protected by gunmen, its ranch hands constantly drove herds across Black Creek range to the water rich creek which gave the little ranch its name. Then Matt Crowe purchased Black Creek. A former outlaw, hired gun and bounty hunter, Crowe had never looked for trouble. He didn't have to for since the Civil War, it had always found him. Black Creek with two sassy and very attractive twin sisters already in residence, proved to be no exception. Yet what could one man and two beautiful young women do against the twenty hired gunmen of the mighty Bar-T? Very little until Crowe found an old foe who became a dangerous ally. Then together their death dealing six-guns turned the crystal clear waters of Black Creek blood red.

Will Bagley’s Blood of the Prophets is an award-winning, riveting account of the attack on the Baker-Fancher wagon train by Mormons in the local militia and a few Paiute Indians. Based on extensive investigation of the events surrounding the murder of over 120 men, women, and children, and drawing from a wealth of primary sources, Bagley explains how the murders occurred, reveals the involvement of territorial governor Brigham Young, and explores the subsequent suppression and distortion of events related to the massacre by the Mormon Church and others.

But one by one they slipped away, to death or to an easier existence elsewhere, leaving Rita as Daisy's last hope to right the racial wrongs of the past and to make good on a lifetime of thwarted ambition. If the Creek Don't Rise tells how Rita found her way out from under this crippling legacy and, instead of becoming "a perfect credit to her race," discovered how to become herself. Black, White, and Indian

Blood Over Black Creek [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Black, White, and Indian by Claudio Saunt Book Summary:

Deceit, compromise, and betrayal were the painful costs of becoming American for many families. For people of Indian, African, and European descent living in the newly formed United States, the most personal and emotional choices--to honor a friendship or pursue an intimate relationship--were often necessarily guided by the harsh economic realities imposed by the country's racial hierarchy. Few families in American history embody this struggle to survive the pervasive onslaught of racism more than the Graysons. Like many other residents of the eighteenth-century Native American South, where Black-Indian relations bore little social stigma, Katy Grayson and her brother William--both Creek Indians--had children with partners of African descent. As the plantation economy began to spread across their native land soon after the birth of the American republic, however, Katy abandoned her black partner and children to marry a Scottish-Creek man. She herself became a slaveholder, embracing slavery as a public display of her elevated place in America's racial hierarchy. William, by contrast, refused to leave his black wife and their several children and even legally emancipated them. Traveling separate paths, the Graysons survived the invasion of the Creek Nation by U.S. troops in 1813 and again in 1836 and endured the Trail of Tears, only to confront each other on the battlefield during the Civil War. Afterwards, they refused to recognize each other's existence. In 1907, when Creek Indians became U.S. citizens, Oklahoma gave force of law to the family schism by defining some Graysons as white, others as black. Tracking a full five generations of the Grayson family and basing his account in part on unprecedented access to the forty-four volume diary of G. W. Grayson, the one-time principal chief of the Creek Nation, Claudio Saunt tells not only of America's past, but of its present, shedding light on one of the most contentious issues in Indian politics, the role of "blood" in the construction of identity. Overwhelmed by the racial hierarchy in the United States and compelled to adopt the very ideology that oppressed them, the Graysons denied their kin, enslaved their relatives, married their masters, and went to war against each other. Claudio Saunt gives us not only a remarkable saga in its own right but one that illustrates the centrality of race in the American experience.

Two Dead Men in Rock Creek Park

Blood Over Black Creek [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Two Dead Men in Rock Creek Park by Darby Bannard Book Summary:

This murder mystery and psychological novel tells of the tangled lives and loves of powerful figures in 1970s post-Watergate Washington. Catherine Lafitte has made peace with her past and with her husband, Hamilton "Hap" Lafitte, the philandering, hard-drinking US Senator from Lake City, Florida. She has a big house in the country and a lover in town, and has pushed herself to the top level of Washington society. Arthur Bernardi, Catherine's lover and famous sculptor, lives in an old house that overlooks Rock Creek Park with his alcoholic musician friend Cal Canoun. At a raucous party featuring the music of 91-year-old jazz musician Benny King, we meet Harold Smith-Green, Catherine's former lover, known in the media as "The Shadow Tycoon", Niki, the beautiful spoiled brat from horse country, Chloe the scheming left-wing columnist, Abilene Dooley, Washington's favorite courtesan, and Buck Reston, psychiatrist to the rich and famous. Two days later their world is blown apart by the early morning discovery of two dead men in Rock Creek Park. Agents Richard Kuprovic and Joe Geraghty, the "Mutt & Jeff" of the FBI, conduct a frustrating murder investigation lightened by Kuprovic's bantering relationship with girlfriend Cass Alexander, society girl turned fashion photographer. Two mysterious poisoning deaths occur, a delightful May afternoon drive to Maryland's Eastern Shore ends tragically and streetwalker Willa Hodges tells a frightening story. The solution of the mystery, inadvertently given away but unnoticed in the middle of the book, is bizarre and completely unexpected.

Black Slaves, Indian Masters

Blood Over Black Creek [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Black Slaves, Indian Masters by Barbara Krauthamer Book Summary:

From the late eighteenth century through the end of the Civil War, Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians bought, sold, and owned Africans and African Americans as slaves, a fact that persisted after the tribes' removal from the Deep South to Indian Territory. The tribes formulated racial and gender ideologies that justified this practice and marginalized free black people in the Indian nations well after the Civil War and slavery had ended. Through the end of the nineteenth century, ongoing conflicts among Choctaw, Chickasaw, and U.S. lawmakers left untold numbers of former slaves and their descendants in the two Indian nations without citizenship in either the Indian nations or the United States. In this groundbreaking study, Barbara Krauthamer rewrites the history of southern slavery, emancipation, race, and citizenship to reveal the centrality of Native American slaveholders and the black people they enslaved. Krauthamer's examination of slavery and emancipation highlights the ways Indian women's gender roles changed with the arrival of slavery and changed again after emancipation and reveals complex dynamics of race that shaped the lives of black people and Indians both before and after removal.

The Blood of Paradise

The Blood of Paradise by Stephen Goodwin Book Summary:

Stephen Goodwin's second novel is an emblematic tale of the sixties, of a sophisticated couple going back to the land. The restlessness that compels Anna and Steadman to move from the city to a small mountain farm in Virginia is brought into high relief by the cycles of the natural world, and by the arrival of Anna's demonic twin sister. Goodwin's prose, by turns stark and pastoral, outlines these struggles while leavening them with self-effacing humor and beauty. Peopled with hippies and mountain folk, artists and farmers both organic and traditional, not to mention an unforgettable child, The Blood of Paradise evokes an era through a sensitive and unstinting portrait of marriage.
