Beneath the Second Sun

Beneath [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Beneath the Second Sun by Adam W. Sweeting Book Summary:

Indian summer, the succession of warm, fair days gracing New England in autumn, is at once a flourishing period signaling the end of fall, a meteorological event, a vernacular cultural construction, and a literary metaphor. In this appealing and elegant book, Sweeting plumbs Indian summer's use in literature as a symbol of second chance, rebirth, or reprieve before the onset of a harsher season. Well researched and charmingly written, Beneath the Second Sun is the first book to systematically treat the history and uses of Indian summer imagery in American life. The author focuses on the ways in which New Englanders have embraced the season, and he places the celebration of the season's beauty and its melancholy qualities within the context of Anglo-Native American relations. Sweeting does not try to locate the original definition of Indian summer, rather he explores the far more interesting ways in which the season has been imagined and described in American culture. Popular authors including Philip Freneau, Susan Cooper, Lydia Sigourney, John Greenleaf Whittier, Francis Parkman Oliver, Wendell Holmes, and, especially, Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, and William Dean Howells freely employ Indian summer imagery in their works. In the context of modern American Studies, Sweeting's study is part of a "post-modern" scholarly discussion of how tangible realities such as climate are mediated, even forged, by social needs. Sweeting further investigates the imaginative, early-nineteenth-century "invention" of New England regional identity and integrates traditional American Studies literary and historical concerns with a contemporary interest in the environment and sense of place. Sweeting's graceful, lively, and accessible style beckons not only scholars of American literature and the nineteenth century but any traveler seeking the glories of autumn in New England.

Beneath the Volcano

Beneath [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Beneath the Volcano by Gregory Forth Book Summary:

Beneath the Volcano is the first major account of the Nage, who inhabit the central part of Flores in eastern Indonesia. The book focuses on Nage ideas concerning a variety of spiritual beings and how these influence both ritual practices and ideas about human beings. In exploring these subjects, the author sets out to uncover a classification of spirits. While quite different from taxonomies of natural beings, Nage ways of linking named categories of spirits nevertheless reveal a regular conceptual order. In describing this order, use is made of a version of Dumont's notion of 'encompassment'. Common ideas informing relations between Nage humans and several categories of spirits are further interpreted as instances of a pervasive principle of 'symmetric inversion', according to which human beings are spirits for the spirits.

Beneath the Surface

Beneath [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Beneath the Surface by Eric Katz,Andrew Light,David Rothenberg Book Summary:

The philosophy of deep ecology originated in the 1970s with the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess and has since spread around the world. Its basic premises are a belief in the intrinsic value of nonhuman nature, a belief that ecological principles should dictate human actions and moral evaluations, an emphasis on noninterference into natural processes, and a critique of materialism and technological progress. This book approaches deep ecology as a philosophy, not as a political, social, or environmental movement. In part I, the authors compare deep ecology's philosophical ideas with other positions and debates in environmental philosophy and to other schools of thought such as social ecology, ecofeminism, and moral pluralism. In part II, they investigate the connections between deep ecology and other contemporary world views, such as continental philosophy, postmodernism, and non-Western philosophical traditions. The first anthology on deep ecology that is not primarily the work of the movement's followers, Beneath the Surface offers a rigorous assessment of deep ecology's strengths and weaknesses as a philosophical position. Contributors John Clark, Deane Curtin, Arran Gare, William Grey, Mathew Humphrey, Knut Jacobsen, Eric Katz, Andrew Light, Jonathan Maskit, Val Plumwood, David Rothenberg, Ariel Salleh, Bron Taylor, Michael Zimmerman

Beneath the surface: Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace for Counterterrorism by Troy S. Thomas Book Summary:

This book presents the deep subject-matter understanding gained by a mid-career U.S. Air Force officer who as a Research Fellow engaged in a year-long quest for insight into asymmetric conflict analysis and synthesis. His formulation, presented here in an accessible, systematic manner that makes it suitable as a handbook for practitioners at any level, goes well beyond any existing guidance yet assembled in one package. This product has been reviewed by senior experts from academia and government, and has been approved for unrestricted distribution by the Office of Freedom of Information and Security Review, Washington Headquarters Services. Beneath the Crust of Culture

Beneath [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Beneath the Crust of Culture by Howard F. Stein Book Summary:

In this book, the author presents a pioneering interpretation of culture as constituting a dynamic relationship between the visible "crust" and the elusive "core" of social life. He meticulously maps the role of the unconscious in shaping much of American life in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He crosses and transcends disciplinary boundaries in studies of September 11, 2001, the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, the execution of Timothy McVeigh, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1999 Worcester, Massachusetts fire, and the eruption of hypernationalism and xenophobia in nations and workplaces -- all as cultural phenomena with a psychodynamic core. He shows how the experience of loss in the face of massive social change often leads to equally massive defence against the experience of mourning. Beneath the Crust of Culture will be of interest not only for behavioural and social science professionals, but also for a lay public interested in understandings of culture deeper than the surface of the news and of official pronouncements.

Beneath Archers Tree

Beneath [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Beneath Archers Tree by H K Nicholson Book Summary:

This book takes an unusual slant on life, both from a socioeconomic and cultural standpoint. The underlying sense of humor leans towards Native American and the working class, you know the people that really built America and every other country on this planet. This being said, the reader will find a connection to the author and this book. The book takes the reader on a journey of discovery that opens that primal dormant eye of the hunter in all of us. The author was raised in a couture that is rich in oral history. Stories told around tables and campfires a couture that believes in signs and visions both are depicted in this offering. The author said that the family stories were wrote just like they happen only some of the names were changed. There are strong intelligent female characters through-out this book. The only character created was one to help explain a dream or vision depending on ones belief system. A vision that the author had while in the mountains. This book asks the reader to question everything around us, some questions are even quantum based. There is a freckle here and a wort there but overall this book is well worth the read. You will laugh and cry and your spirit will fly. Beneath Archers Tree has been read by some of the smartest people in this country, some worked for NASA, some were professors, one, is one of the author's hero's. This hero is Russell Means the Indian activist and actor and author of, “Where White Men Fear To Tread.” A book every American should take a moment and read. Mr. Means read a chapter from Beneath Archers Tree, the chapter was Stain Glass Sky, he sent a note saying how much he liked it.
