Lives of Dalhousie University, Volume 1

At The Fireside Volume 1 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Lives of Dalhousie University, Volume 1 by P. Waite Book Summary:

Financed by British spoils from eastern Maine in the War of 1812, modelled on the University of Edinburgh, and shaped by Scottish democratic education tradition, Dalhousie was unique among Nova Scotia colleges in being the only liberal, nonsectarian institution of higher learning. Except for a brief flicker of life (1838-43), for the first forty-five years no students or professors entered Dalhousie's halls a reflection in part of the intense religious loyalties embedded in Nova Scotian politics. The college building itself was at different times a cholera hospital and a Halifax community centre. Finally launched in 1863 and by 1890 embracing the disciplines of law and medicine, Dalhousie owed its driving force to the Presbyterians, retaining a double loyalty to their ethos of hard work and devotion to learning and to a board, staff, and student body of mixed denominations. P.B. Waite enlivens his descriptions of the life of the university with evocative portrayals of governors, professors, and students, as well as sketches of the social and economic development of Halifax. A welcome addition to the histories of Canadian universities, this volume and its forthcoming companion, dealing with the years 1925 to 1980, contribute significantly to our knowledge of the sometimes bitter internecine struggles that accompanied the development of higher education in Canada. "Everywhere is evident the deft turn of phrase, the captivating descriptions, the beautifully drawn word pictures that do much to enliven and illuminate the story ... It possesses many strengths, including clarity and liveliness, and tells us much about Dalhousie as an institution of buildings, presidents, and professors." B. Moody, Department of History, Acadia University.

Fireside Tales

At The Fireside Volume 1 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Fireside Tales by Thomas Aquinas Sithole Book Summary:

Set in a southern African kingdom, Singita is a young princess whose idyllic life takes a dramatic downturn after her father is assassinated. Singita harbours a suspicion that her uncle Maanda, who becomes regent, had played a leading role in her father's death. Behind an impassive exterior, Maanda is a megalomaniac who cunningly manipulates those around him to achieve his ends. When Maanda discovers that Singita suspects him of regicide, he hastily arranges her marriage to the ruler of a distant, subordinate nation, effectively exiling her. In spite of her exile, Singita strives to expose Maanda and scupper what she believes are his plans to usurp the throne that rightfully belongs to her young brother Gavi, whom she had spirited away to safety in the aftermath of their father's murder. Nothing seems to come of Singita's efforts to frustrate Maanda's plans as he looks set to take over everything that had once been her father's. All appears to be lost for Singita when Gavi is apparently murdered in the land of his refuge. In the belief that Gavi had died, Maanda prepares to ascend to the throne but his plans unravel when Gavi turns out to have survived the attempt on his life. Undeterred, Maanda browbeats his way to being declared king nonetheless. A civil war pitting Maanda against Gavi's proponents erupts shortly thereafter. Against the odds, Singita plays a crucial role in the war that ends with Maanda's demise and the restoration of the throne to its rightful occupant.

Defining the Master

At The Fireside Volume 1 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Defining the Master by Ramtha (the enlightened one (Spirit)) Book Summary:

"Does the life of the master exist for each of you? Absolutely. Is there anyone in this room that does not have that immortal line of potential around you? Everyone in this room has it, more so because you have learned about it. But why then wouldn't it make sense to say, 'But if I know it is there, how come I don't elect to be that?' It is not that we wish we could be a master - it is much more than that - it is that being the master isn't our common thought. And if it were, then the life that you are now living would dramatically change to be one of no past, total clarity, unattachment, joy, and living in the present moment where the magic presence is effervescent every moment." - Ramtha

Dickens' Greatest Christmas Books: 5 books in 1 volume

At The Fireside Volume 1 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Dickens' Greatest Christmas Books: 5 books in 1 volume by Charles Dickens Book Summary:

This carefully crafted ebook: “Dickens' Greatest Christmas Books: 5 books in 1 volume” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A Christmas Carol: The tale has been viewed by critics as an indictment of 19th-century industrial capitalism. It has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and sombreness. The Chimes: The story of Trotty Veck, a poor ticket porter, whose outlook is changed from despair to hope by the spirits of the chimes on New Year's Eve. The Cricket on the Hearth: Short tale written by Charles Dickens as a Christmas book for 1845 but published in 1846. The title creature is a sort of barometer of life at the home of John Peerybingle and his much younger wife Dot. When things go well, the cricket on the hearth chirps; it is silent when there is sorrow. Tackleton, a jealous old man, poisons John's mind about Dot, but the cricket through its supernatural powers restores John's confidence and all ends happily. The Battle of Life: In this tale, the main characters live in a rural English village that was the site of an historic battle. The battle comes to symbolize the struggles these characters face in their daily lives. The Haunted Man: The Haunted Man is a novella by Charles Dickens first published in 1848. It is the fifth and last of Dickens' Christmas novellas. The story is more about the spirit of the holidays than about the holidays themselves, harking back to the first of the series, A Christmas Carol. The tale centers around a Professor Redlaw and those close to him. Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular.

Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara: Volume 1

At The Fireside Volume 1 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara: Volume 1 by Karl von Scherzer Book Summary:

Joined by seven eminent natural scientists, including Karl von Scherzer (1821-1903), the Austrian naval expedition of 1857-9 was remarkable for its globe-spanning scale. During the course of the voyage, the naturalists collected an abundance of samples which contributed to several scientific discoveries, including the isolation of cocaine in its pure form. Some of the investigations also revolutionised knowledge in such fields as geology, oceanography, hydrography and geomagnetism, and are still being studied by modern-day researchers. Prepared by Scherzer and first published in English in 1861-3, this is a compelling three-volume account of the mission, remaining relevant to scholars interested in naval exploration and the history of science. Opening with the guidance given by Alexander von Humboldt prior to the expedition, Volume 1 covers the leg between Europe and India. It includes notes on the social structure of the populations encountered, and on the local flora and fauna.
