All Together Different

All Together Different [Pdf/ePub] eBook

All Together Different by Daniel Katz Book Summary:

In the early 1930's, the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) organized large numbers of Black and Hispanic workers through a broadly conceived program of education, culture, and community involvement. The ILGWU admitted these new members, the overwhelming majority of whom were women, into racially integrated local unions and created structures to celebrate ethnic differences. All Together Different revolves around this phenomenon of interracial union building and worker education during the Great Depression. Investigating why immigrant Jewish unionists in the ILGWU appealed to an international force of co-workers, Daniel Katz traces their ideology of a working-class based cultural pluralism, which he newly terms mutual culturalism, back to the revolutionary experiences of Russian Jewish women. These militant women and their male allies constructed an ethnic identity derived from Yiddish socialist tenets based on the principle of autonomous national cultures in the late nineteenth century Russian Empire.Built on original scholarship and bolstered by exhaustive research, All Together Different offers a fresh perspective on the nature of ethnic identity and working-class consciousness and contributes to current debates about the origins of multiculturalism.

All Together Different

All Together Different [Pdf/ePub] eBook

All Together Different by J. Brian Tucker,John Koessler Book Summary:

Can we all just get along? E Pluribus Unum: “Out of many, one.” This motto is emblazoned on the Great Seal of the United States, but it could be the church’s model, too. Unfortunately, the daily experience of many Christians and churches feels like the opposite: out of one, many. We are increasingly aware of what makes us different from others, and it is hurting the church and its witness. All Together Different will help readers understand why we find it so difficult “to just get along.” Drawing from research on personal and group identity, it equips readers to navigate a culture that often pays lip service to the value of diversity, but struggles to foster constructive dialogue and mutual respect. With clear writing and real-life stories, All Together Different translates social identity theory for pastors, church leaders, and ministry practitioners, exposing it to the light of biblical and theological reflection.

Language, Mind, and Art

All Together Different [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Language, Mind, and Art by D. Jamieson Book Summary:

This book is a collection of essays in honor of Paul Ziff written by his col leagues, students, and friends. Many of the authors address topics that Ziff has discussed in his writings: understanding, rules and regularities, proper names, the feelings of machines, expression, and aesthetic experience. Paul Ziff began his professional career as an artist, went on to study painting with J. M. Hanson at Cornell, and then studied for the Ph. D. in philosophy, also at Cornell, with Max Black. Over the next three decades he produced a series of remarkable papers in philosophy of art, culminating in 1984 with the publica tion of Antiaesthetics: An Appreciation of the Cow with the Subtile Nose. In 1960 he published Semantic Analysis, his masterwork in philosophy of lan guage. Throughout his career he made important contributions to philosophy of mind in such papers as "The Simplicity of Other Minds" (1965) and "About Behaviourism" (1958). In addition to his work in these areas, his lec tures at Harvard on philosophy of religion are an underground classic; and throughout his career he has continued to make art and to search for the meaning of life in the properties of prime numbers. Although his interests are wide and deep, questions about language, art, and mind have dominated his philosophical work, and it is problems in these areas that provide the topics of most of the essays in this volume.

The Ark of Asylum

All Together Different [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Ark of Asylum by Scott Kotrous Book Summary:

In the wake of endless terrorist attacks that have taken the U.S. to the brink of societal collapse, a kind of rabid zombie is born that catapults the world beyond the brink and into unprecedented levels of terror. And on the eve of the apocalypse, only three types may survive: the wealthy, the fortunate, and the well prepared. A long string of terrorist attacks has humanity on edge, which prompts John, a very rich man, and his family to buy a mountain in the Rockies and build a massive bomb shelter there. It's their own version of NORAD-and their salvation. Unwilling to leave any family members behind, John also builds a house with a bomb shelter for his niece, Maggie, who is going to college in Boulder. Meanwhile, an ex-military biologist, Simon, and his son, Peter, have been living above a bomb shelter in a Denver suburb for years, and they are more than prepared, or so they think. After the attacks subside for a few years, protests against the government roar up across the country. Rampant and uncontained, the situation forces the police to use an experimental tear gas. However, the tear gas has been tampered with, which causes a kind of human rabies, creating a kind of zombie effect in anyone infected. Suddenly, "uncontrollable" means something all together different. Not even John, Maggie, Simon, and Peter, despite their preparations, can anticipate what is to come. When the infected spread outside the major protest cities, it cripples the country and makes it vulnerable to further attack. An eventual nuclear attack will force the president to respond by attacking the suspected countries, thus creating a domino effect that will become full-out nuclear war, World War 3, and, eventually, the Apocalypse.

Pee Wee

All Together Different [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Pee Wee by Grady Query Book Summary:

Volume II of PEE WEE, Serial Killer or Homicidal Maniac, focuses on the courtroom drama of his several trials and appeals. Readers that enjoy trial strategy, courtroom personalities and the cloakroom maneuvering of the criminal courts will find a plethora of intriguing twists and turns. Seemingly foregone outcomes are reversed by national events or by the local politics of the farmlands of South Carolina that stubbornly resist change. It is replete with excerpts from actual trial transcriptions and transcripts of out of court statements given under oath. Despite his numerous murder convictions Gaskins manages time and again to avoid the death penalty in real life by virtue of unexpected events that could seemingly occur only in fiction. Told by an attorney intimately involved in the cases, there are pithy descriptions of battles fought in and out of the courtroom on the one hand and on the other of the camaraderie between adversaries. Both often lead to unpredictable outcomes. Pee Wee Gaskins describes the murders to which he will plead guilty in his own words. At the same time by either omission or outright lies, he avoids the inclusion of those murders for which he does not want to admit responsibility. Finally, in one of the most incredible crimes imaginable, the tiny killer foils the safeguard systems of a maximum security penitentiary to murder a fellow death row inmate with plastic explosives.

Letters from a Black and White World

All Together Different [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Letters from a Black and White World by Teresa Price Book Summary:

A rare glimpse into the training and life of a mid-twentieth-century nun; a story told on two levels— actual letters written as it was experienced, interspersed with narrative and retrospective comments. Overall, the book is a love story of a girl seeking God and dedicating her life to His service. The story begins on a hot July day when the seventeen-year-old candidate arrives at the novitiate in Missouri. Candid letters reveal the gradual transformation from a frivolous teen to a dedicated religious. The letters chronicle her efforts to cope with the rigorous training and lifestyle and ultimately, her failure to conform. Psychological effects and consequences of the lifestyle are discussed. Retrospective comments enhance the story, explaining customs and practices of the Old World spirituality of the times. Details of the Church reforms enacted in the 1960s that brought dramatic needed change are included. The system of belief, customs, and practices of the times sheds light on the scandalous abuse and secrecy issues in the news today. The author sums up her experiences in these words: “Some would argue, but I believe there is such a thing as a temporary vocation. I see my seven and a half years in the convent as such—a precious time of protection for me at a most vulnerable time in my life. Unaware of my motivation at the time, I’ve come to realize I entered the convent seeking peace and escape from the pain of losing my sister. The Lord called me aside just for a time, and during that time I learned to love and trust Him unreservedly. I felt a deep happiness, but as is the course of things, I eventually suffered the emotional consequences of denying those feelings of loss, guilt, and anger and not allowing myself to grieve.”
