This is a collection of stories not just about dreams but about the price that you pay for achieving them. Dhirubhai's path was liberally sprinkled with obstacles. Some of them were deliberately placed by peers who hoped in vain to slow down his hard-to-beat pace, and some by fate itself. But unlike you and me who would probably change course after overcoming a few, he on the other hand, persevered, found a way around them, bulldozed his way through the others, but more importantly never, ever lost hope, and was rewarded a hundredfold because of it.

A Child Against All Odds

Against All Odds [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Child Against All Odds by Lord Robert Winston Book Summary:

Compared to the famously fecund rabbit, for whom a single act of coitus has a 90% chance of creating a litter of up to 12 rabbits, humans are very infertile animals. Here in the UK, the average chance of conception is about 18% per month. And in 98% of cases, successful conception leads only to the birth of a single infant. It is unsurprising then that huge efforts have been made to increase our fertility. In vitro fertilisation, first attempted one hundred years ago, has now become big business. Market forces, combined with the desperation of many couples to fulfil their biological imperative, have pushed doctors and scientists closer to the boundaries of what is desirable or ethical. And as we are increasingly able to access and control the embryo, the opportunities of altering human genetics to eradicate disease, but also to change human characteristics, becomes a real, and to some, frightening possibility. A Child Against All Odds is a ground-breaking book for Robert Winston as it falls squarely in his area of expertise. It combines his work at Hammersmith Hospital as one of the country's leading fertility specialists, with a hard-hitting, sometimes humorous, often controversial look at the scientific, social and ethical background of man's struggle to discover and control the secrets of reproduction. Drawing on personal and professional experience, it is the definitive account of modern reproductive technology from a practitioner who has spent his professional life at the forefront of this most fascinating and emotive area of science.

George Pemba

Against All Odds [Pdf/ePub] eBook

George Pemba by Sarah Hudleston Book Summary:

George Milwa Mnyaluza Pemba is without doubt a great South African artist. Yet, until shortly before his death in 2001 when he was 89 years old, he was little recognised. Pemba was born 2 April 1912 in Korsten, Port Elizabeth. His talent emerged early in his life. He attended a mission school in Bethelsdorp, near Port Elizabeth but was often chastised by the teachers for wasting his time drawing. At age 16, he won first prize in an art competition at the local agricultural show. In 1931, Pemba studied at the Lovedale Teacher Training College in Alice, so that he would have a stable career and would be able to help his family financially. Pemba's beginnings as a painter occurred at a time and place not only highly unfavourable, but well nigh impossible, for a young black man to succeed as an artist. Rural and township life were his main sources of inspiration and his works became accurate reflections of the social and political conditions of his people. The balance and the harmonious arrangements of the elements in his compositions, together with the richness of his colours, contribute to the gentleness, but at the same time to the vitality of his work.
