This early work by Ring Lardner was originally published in 1918 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'Treat 'Em Rough' is a selection of short stories written in letter form. Ring Lardner was born in Niles, Michigan in 1885. He studied engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, but did not complete his first semester. In 1907, Lardner obtained his first job as journalist with the South Bend Times. Six years later, he published his first successful book, You Know Me Al, an epistolary novel written in the form of letters by 'Jack Keefe', a bush-league baseball player, to a friend back home. A huge hit, the book earned the appreciation of Virginia Woolf and others. Whiskey River Ranger by Bob Alexander Book Summary:

Captain Frank Jones, a famed nineteenth-century Texas Ranger, said of his company-s top sergeant, Baz Outlaw (1854-1894), "A man of unusual courage and coolness and in a close place is worth two or three ordinary men." Another old-time Texas Ranger declared that Baz Outlaw "was one of the worst and most dangerous" because "he never knew what fear was." But not all thought so highly of him. In Whiskey River Ranger, Bob Alexander tells for the first time the full story of this troubled Texas Ranger and his losing battle with alcoholism. In his career Baz Outlaw wore a badge as a Texas Ranger and also as a Deputy U.S. Marshal. He could be a fearless and crackerjack lawman, as well as an unmanageable manic. Although Baz Outlaw's badge-wearing career was sometimes heroically creditable, at other times his self-induced nightmarish imbroglios teased and tested Texas Ranger management's resoluteness. Baz Outlaw's true-life story is jam-packed with fellows owning well-known names, including Texas Rangers, city marshals, sheriffs, and steely-eyed mean-spirited miscreants. Baz Outlaw's tale is complete with horseback chases, explosive train robberies, vigilante justice (or injustice), nighttime ambushes and bushwhacking, and episodes of scorching six-shooter finality. Baz met his end in a brothel brawl at the hands of John Selman, the same gunfighter who killed John Wesley Hardin.

Badman's Pass by R. W. Stone Book Summary:

Badger Kershaw was becoming a familiar figure on the frontier after the War between the States. Riding an Appaloosa with Lobo, his dog-wolf hybrid, often by his side, he was feared by most outlaws on the dodge on whom there was a bounty. It was not a savory profession, perhaps, but Kershaw was honest about what he did. Frontier lawmen for the most part were accustomed to dealing with Kershaw. When the fugitive was willing to surrender-which was less frequent than it might be thought-Kershaw would bring in an outlaw alive, but it was not an option he encountered very often. Generally it was one man against another, but in what would possibly be Badger Kershaw's greatest feat, the odds were quite different. Colonel Benjamin Grierson had been Kershaw's commanding officer during the War between the States. When, years after the war's end, Grierson's daughter was one of the four women seized in a train hold-up and taken prisoner, Grierson appealed again to the man who had once served under him to rescue the women from the outlaw gang. Kershaw surprised the army when he chose to do the job entirely alone, despite the incredible odds against him.

The Mystery of Cloomber by Arthur Conan Doyle Book Summary:

General Heatherstone, who was a while ago a part of the Indian Army, moved to Cloomber Hall. The general was however acting strange and was paranoid for most of the time. His fears were apparently caused by things that happened in his past during the First Afghan War. The situation worsened when three priests from Kurrachee arrived and demanded a meeting with the general. What will happen with him? Will he have the courage to face his past or he will try to run away? What was the real reason for his fears? What was so bad that it caused him paranoid outbursts even forty years later? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.

Piper in the Woods by Philip K. Dick Book Summary:

Henry Harris, an army doctor at a garrison on Earth is puzzled by a case of a soldier who returns from the asteroid Y-3, and claims that he's a plant. When several more men return from Y-3, each thinking they're a plant, Harris travels to the asteroid to solve the puzzle. He soon finds out that the soldiers claim that a certain indigenous people on the asteroid called "Pipers", who live in the woods, made them realize that they're plants. Harris ventures into the woods and discovers that Pipers do not exist, they were merely invented by the soldiers to cope with the pressure of their jobs. The soldiers relaxed by simply turning into plants, or their minds thought so. Harris returns to earth and contemplates all the work that lies ahead of him. He unpacks his suitcases, which, rather than carrying clothes, contain soil from Y-3. Harris lays the soil on the ground, lies in it like a plant, and goes to sleep.

Oak Openings Or the Bee Hunter by James Fenimore Cooper Book Summary:

One of his lesser known works, Oak Openings or The Bee Hunter is one of Cooper's last novels. The book opens with the meeting of four men, Elksfoot, Pigeonswing, Benjamin Boden, and Gershom Waring. Boden is a bee-hunter, who searches for natural bee hives and harvests the honey. Waring is a down-on-his-luck alcohol trader. And the lives of the two Indians are a source of intrigue. As the four settle into Boden's house for dinner and conversation, they begin talking about the politics of the day, including the impending war between the Americans and the British. The men part ways in the morning, but murder and danger soon follow them all. Elksfoot turns up dead, and Boden and Waring must escape a deadly band of Pottawattamie Indians. Along the way, they pick up new travelers, all trying to find a way out of Pottawattamie territory and certain death. Anyone with an interest in frontier fiction will enjoy this classic book from one of America's most renowned authors. Popular American novelist JAMES FENIMORE COOPER (1789-1851) is best remembered for his 1826 epic The Last of the Mohicans, considered his masterpiece.

"GOAT FOR AZAZEL" - A WORLD WAR II STORY is the saga of the friendship between two Poles, a Christian and a Jew,against the backdrop of events that enfolded in Europe between 1939-1945. During this six-year span,Henry Kaplinski, a Jew, is forced to live and survive as a Christian. A sequence of events propels him from the Red Army to the German Wehrmacht. At the same time, his childhood friend, Edward Daszkiewicz is drawn closer to Jewish values and culture through his love of a woman who, while raised Catholic, discovers her Jewish roots in the mids of war. The action of the story moves from Soviet-occupied Poland to Finland,Russia,Germany,Italy and England. There is also a parallel sub-plot involving a U.S.Air Force pilot,Col.Paul Krafchin, who sees action in the European campaign. The various twists and turns of fate alternatively separates and rejoins the characters, always under the constantly-changing and immensely trying circumstances of the war. The novel, much like the film,"Saving Private Ryan", uses true historical facts and details to uncover the essential elements of human nature. It is only under difficult times that what is true and real of people becomes revealed. The enduring values of loyalty, human dignity and freedom are put to test over again in the extreme conditions of deprivation, hunger and fear for one's survival.
